I immediately fell in love with this song from just a few opening notes. LOVE the song, and the video is genius! Many of my family and friends didn't get it, except my dad. 🙂😊
No surprise this song is about Stevie Nicks.
(Edit: I fell in love when it was released. I'll be 67 soon enough. No lie, "Boomers" and "Gen X" had the best music!)
I know you really want to tell me goodbye I know you really want to be your own girl...
I was 32 years old when this song was released. I'm 70 now and this is still one of my all time favorite videos. It's a masterpiece.
I am 56 and the VIDEO is pure golg. Best one, of cource: Kate Bush, Running up that hill and more
I was young when this video came out, I thought it was creepy
Clockwork orange ass video
But still one of the greatest musicians :)
I was 15 when I saw this at MTV. I had a girl like that. Of cource, not my falt...
Tom Petty embraced the possibilities of the music video in ways not many rock artists would. He was a legend.
The symbols are borrowed.
Idk this video seems right up David Lee Roth’s alley, “gimme a bottle of anything and a glazed donut to go”
1:04
What do u mean? Alice in wonderland is commonplace and Freemasonic imagery is in like every video ever. Not to mention the cannibalism
Alice in wonderland was written about one of my ancestors Alice Liddell. I am Joshua Liddell 😊
One of the best videos for MTV ever made, IMO,....
remember when it came out. R.I.P TP
RIP music on MTV
I remember when MTV actually played music videos man great fkn times
Alice in chains oops I mean Alice in wonderland ✨️
At the end is the best Alice is a cake and they slice her up and then eat her 😹😂☺️
Absolutely one of the best videos by the late Tom Petty...
Never seen him live wish I did thou...RIP 🙏🏽
Tom Petty is the greatest Mad Hatter ever.
Thanks for your music.
R.I.P. Tom, so sadly missed...
We'll miss you and your songs Tom Petty
so glad I got to see him live. awesome musician, awesome guy.
Love this may be my fave of all
David Castillo R.I.P. Tom Petty
Super jealous of him. He's up there with Bowie and Prince right now. ♡
MTV played this video damn near non-stop in 1985 when I was an 11 year old kid and it freaked me smooth the hell out. Now, at 48 it’s freakin awesome. Petty is up there with all the greats. Total new appreciation for his artistry.
Same! I'm 48 too, haha!
Something about his voice soothes my soul. 😏
Same here lol, it was mesmerizing. Also 48 btw :)
I absolutely LOVE this video! I’m 46 🤷♀️
It is freakin' awesome that you claim to be 48 years of age when my 2 son's were born in '88 and '89' and they are 33 and 34 years of age, maybe you missed a Decade Just saying! or is it just embellishment to be unnoticed.!!
Tom Petty as The Mad Hatter is just inspired! One of the best music videos of the 80s, but what am I saying - of all time, really.
This song and White Rabbit are bookends of an era.
I love Tom’s creativity. He was ahead of his time. He didn’t have to do anything to prove he was cool. He just was.
His music sooooo good sooo often
I think Tom has the best music videos on TH-cam
Yes he sure does. No matter what anyone says.
this music video scared the shit out of me when I was little... great song
hehe am listening to it now when 33 and am scared shitless
+Michael rushoki :)
+Caitlin Lock :)
Carl Wallin, me too! especially when they ate her like a cake!
I think it scarred an entire generation.
"I don't feel you anymore", I always loved that. It perfectly captures the erosion of a relationship so succinctly. You could write a dissertation on why people fall out of love with their significant other, especially when the s.o. has done nothing wrong, but Tom sums it up in 5 words. Wherever the feeling goes, it's gone.
it's about the ma5onic influence in the (music) industry.
if you're talking about that relationship, you're dead on. except heterodyning.
Agreed. I also like ,
“Stop walking down my street, who do you expect to meet”🎉
@jasonB_13 , please don't have children . . .
@@missmaam792 you're about 20 years too late on the sentiment. I am curious what I said that rubbed you the wrong way though.
Because commitment is about honoring your promises, to your partner and your children, even when you don't feel like it.
Feelings are transitory, but children and their need of a mature wise father are not.
Always been a fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. RIP Tom Petty
❤😮
This is simply one of the best music videos ever made. ❤😂
And no computers were harmed in making it.
I ❤love this video

As an 80s kid whose dad was a musician I grew up on Tom Petty. I still can’t believe he’s gone... but he will never be forgotten. Awesome guy with incredible talent.
OH MY GOD WHAT INSTRUMENT DID YOUR DAD PLAY?
Sad...but glad I had the opportunity to hear his music in the 80's.
Always was
100%
It seemed to me that there was always a Tom Petty/Petty and the Heartbreakers album ready for me--he was the soundtrack to my freaking LIFE. God bless that man.
I never knew about the music video, it matches the haunting sound this song has, such a great melody, I can’t really compare it with anything else, it’s timeless
Zap! Now you are in late 80s! With an Idea!
2024 still listening 🎶
Every day!

Yeahhh...Rock in roll forever...Tom Petty forever ❤
They really nailed the strange sinister vibe in this video.
It complements the song beautifully. Well acted by all. Cheers Tom Petty
😐
There’s a reason but you better don’t look for it
@@tombstoneblues1023 Exactly :( Adrenoch.... all that we did not even imagine was truly going on with these V.I.P. famous people during the 80es
I think it is 70s fun and plays on the Alice in Wonderland story. Definitely not sinister?? Tom Petty just a hard working musician.
yea theres no masonic symbolism or human sacrifice symbolism at all lol.
*This song is a masterpiece, this video is a masterpiece, and this band is perfect*
Simply AWESOME
I totally agree! Are you like me because you miss Tom Petty, like I do? He was an awesome musician. Peace.
@@darincampbell171 I miss tom petty
@@CalifornianCuttlefish - I do too! I had mad respect for him. Just another legend gone. Peace.
Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) produced it and wrote it together with Tom.
If it was Dave or Tom who introduced the Danelectro Coral Sitar Guitar to the arrangement I don't know but obviously Dave holds a sitar at the beginning of the video.
Damn these old 80s videos bring back so many memories of a simpler time wasting a hot summer day watching MTV , (when they played music videos) just for the chance they may play a video from your favorite band. And all the great songs and vids of the 80s you would see and take for granted. What a great time to grow up !
i thought this was 90's
Mmmmmm..... 1985. Gen X claims Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Well take the Traveling Wilburys while we're at it
"I don't feel you anymore...."
The saddest line ever written. 🥺
You tangled my emotions is why.

🎩#ACT
It is.
It’s soul crushing
Heartbreaking in certain circumstances.... but a huge relief in others.
Simply one of the best and most haunting songs ever written! RIP Tom.

Hi I recommend a song called 'Where I Come From' By Robert Nix
I can still remember: nice weather, windows wide open, stereo at 10. What a time!
I recommend face in the snow by opeth
When I think haunting song it's always "here comes the rain again" by the Eurythmics for me!
RIP the man, just because he won't be coming around here no more doesn't mean we will forget

So innovative. Back when music was music and the artists were truly special
This is probably my all time favorite Tom Petty song. Its just beautiful
Same!! This song is so original and beautiful. Always my favorite, which is saying something when discussing Petty 😅
So much better than anything you'll hear today
And there you go.
Bands have been mostly replaced by solo artists these days and it shows in the music. There's a difference between a song made in collaboration and a song by one person and some session musicians.

This song makes me cry sometimes. Not because I'm sad, but because this is so beautiful.

This has to be the strangest music video I’ve ever seen, yet also one of the best. Also the song is magnificent.

I really miss Tom, he was one of my favorites. All his songs are classics. He surrounded himself with very talented musicians and the actress who portrayed Alice, was so very beautiful, making this video, even more appealing, for those of us who were watching it then, and still do to this day! Excellent 😎👍❤️
She’s is his sister
There is nothing beautiful about occult symbolism especially concerning child abuse feeding her drugs, rape then eating her alive at the end surrounded by blatant b&w masonic garbage. This is pure evil.
False. She is actress Louise Wish Foley - who would later become drummer Stan Lynch's wife. @@karonhoward436

@@adamcohen1932 Thank you and Happy Unbirthday!
My daughter really got into "Through the Looking Glass" (Alice in Wonderland) as a teen. And when she told me she really digs Tom Petty, I asked her if she liked this video. She never heard this song or saw the video at that time. It felt like giving her 10 birthday presents at once when I pulled up this video and showed her. I still can remember the look on her face as she watched this vid for the first time. It's pure magic to discover something you know a loved one will absolutely adore and be able to give it to them in a snap of your fingers. Rare moments like that are what make life wonderful.
+Tom Mullin I love Jello.
+Tom Mullin Sir I hope your daughter isn't addicted to the poppy. Who knows maybe only shrooms)
Privacy Advocate
I might agree with you, if only I knew wtf you were talking about???
Are you suggesting that reading classic literature is a 'gateway drug' that leads to opiate abuse? Books are meant to be read, not burned. Don't fear reading, it's never a waste of time.
+Tom Mullin Lewis Carroll was an infamous opiate abuser, did you actually watch through the looking glass, this wasn't clear to you? If you think a sober mind created such a fantasy clearly about using, I don't know what to say. If he wasn't high he was clearly insane. Let's just say opium was readily available at the time. If this whole nonsense story isn't a poppy dream, then, well he is just insane. Don't ask me how I know, please.
I didn't 'watch' the book. And I was aware of Carroll's opiate use. You implied that my daughter was a potential drug user for reading a book. Don't do that, I don't react well to such childish implications.

If you read that person's words with ❤️...you'll find their true "intent." And not just come from a place of harshly judging their words. 🤍
To me, they were trying to convey that they are sad that we ALL will never get to hear a BRAND NEW SONG by TP; one that he could have written now because, he was still here on earth 😓physically with us still. 💖
I do absolutely understand, your point, that because, Tommy was such a prolific songwriter, and had a "vault" as it's often referred to, of tons of songs, that had either never been recorded on an album, or were "alternate" versions of some of his songs that were on TPHB & TP albums, or some that were just "informal demos," that we, in a sense, DO STILL get to hear a NEW song that we've not heard before!
Thank God🙏 & Thank you TP for leaving such a generous, priceless gift 💝 of yourself behind for us to treasure!

It's important to know when a relationship has run its course. That's the meaning I get from this song.
Yeah. Been on both sides.

Yeah, I really see that now
I KNOW I REALLY AM A DRAIN ON PEOPLE, WHO WEAR OUT,, ALL THE LIES, THAT ARE TOLD THAT ONLY MAKE THEM LOOK GOOD, ON THE SURFACE, SOONER OR LATER, I JUST WONT, LET THEM, BELIEVE THAT I HAVE DOUBTS IN THEIR TELLINGS TO ME, EVEN THOUGH I AM UNCERTAIN, I CHOOSE TO SHOW TRUST, AND THEN THEY BEGIN,, TO STOP LYING.. UNTIL THE LIES THEY HAD TO TELL, ARE REVEALED, AND THATS WHEN, YOU FORGIVE THEM.
@ComfyCat818 it actually is. It was written by Stevie Nicks about Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics

If I may be so bold, I think that this video is pure genius on more levels than I can count. I can't imagine the time it took 2 recreate ANY part of Alice in Wonderland for a music video when technology and money for an almost unknown artistic genre was not the norm. Even the first 15 seconds of the song, as simple and straightforward as it is ROCKS. No gimmicks. Mr. Petty was at the top of his game. And even now although he may not be with us, I bet he still is.

I was born in the late 80s--around that time, I heard a lot of his music without knowing who he was--but really liked it. When I was in college, I was finally able to piece together that a lot of songs I heard in the 90s while growing up as a kid did indeed belong to Tom Petty. When my father told me today that he died, I thought he was kidding at first because he mentioned it WAY too casually and this was a death NOBODY was expecting at all. RIP, Tom.

My favorite Petty song and a unique video. Petty was quite ahead of his time in making videos far better than the lame ones by the majority of artists in the '80s. A class act. The band must have had great fun making this one!
Billy Idol *cough*
This video has haunted me since childhood. I love it so much. Also, I feel like this is some "hidden in plain sight" stuff.

There are countless times I can recall, driving, listening to Tom and feeling all those chills on my skin. His soothing voice and sweet guitar sound will follow me forever. Rest in Peace legend
Sure it's got a gimmick to it as the premise, but Tom and Co truly made it their own. The video fits so seamlessly with the song and is an outstandingly beautiful piece of art. A masterpiece.
When I hear this song, I immediately remember this video. I found it both disturbing and fascinating at the same time.
disturbing? yikes, you dont want to venture into my world. this video is a walk in the park :P
Yep. I bought the album (on vinyl) when I first saw this video back then! I now realize I was a strange kid. lol.
Well what used to disturb me was that she turned into a cake and she was helpless as they started to cut pieces out of her. :D
You made a wise and wonderful purchase, Brealistic1970!
its so similar to what they do in spirit cooking..that controversy with the Clintons lately..
This video won best special effects at, I believe the MTV awards and Tom's acceptance speech was along the lines of 'this video contained no special effects, thank you.' Lol classic.
Hahahahaha.
Yep that sounds like Tom.
Well, it did contain some technical effects which fall under the broad umbrella of special effects.
Well he's right, this was all practical effects, not special effects. No need for computer-generated stuff, people put a lot of effort into making this an awesome music video.
haha gold
This video was also the very first recipient of what would later be known as "Video of the Year" at the MTV Vma's.
There will never be another like Petty. RIP, Tom.
So many big hits by Tom Petty
