1930s Marx Battery Operated ElectroMagnetic Crane Truck Restoration

  • I purchased this 1930s Marx Battery Operated ElectroMagnetic Crane Truck on eBay October of 2020. It was in dire need of a restoration and missing numerous parts. During disassembly I snapped off a tab on the boom, a tab on the boom mount, found the tab for the battery holder snapped off. The truck was missing the battery switch completely, as well as the electro-magnet. One of the wheels was damaged and had to be repaired, I ended up remaking quite a few parts for this restoration. By far this is my longest video I have produced to date, however I believe that it is well worth it. I love the final results.

There's always something so heartwarming seeing these poor old forgotten toys be given a new lease on life. Even if they don't get played with again, at least they no longer have to sit and die in rust.

My favorite thing is that you play with them; before, during, and after. A toy is never happy unless it's being enjoyed. Their world of make-believe is very real to them, and to the children who have loved them over the years, many of who are no longer with us. You honor their memory.

My sons loved trucks, when they were growing up. One of them even grew up to become a diesel mechanic. During the depression, this truck would have been out of the reach of most parents finances. This had to been have been some youngster's prized possession. I love watching your videos. Your craftsmanship is amazing. (I am 69 year old great grandmother.)

They had some pretty sophisticated toys back in the '30s. The trick is, you had to have money to buy them, and in the Depression era many people did not. My own folks grew up at this time, and they had almost no factory-made toys to play with.

I was a kid in the late '50's and into the '60's, and in my Chicago neighborhood, there were lots of little "Mom & Pop" shops that had sheet metal toys made in Japan. I always wondered how they happened to focus on those toys, and now I see that Marx and other U.S. toy manufacturers established the style decades earlier. Post-war Japanese manufacturers must have felt there was still a demand for this type of toy (though most had flywheel or spring motors, not battery).

Can you imagine how much a battery operated toy would cost in the 1930's? That had to have been the most sophisticated toy made up to that point. Every kid in the country probably wanted one of these.

This was a neat one! My favorite part of restoration videos like this is watching each restorer try different techniques and methods on how to produce a new exact replica of an old broken or missing part/piece of their project. They probably think it’s a pain in the a$$, but it’s so interesting to me. I’m always wowed by what they manage to create & it always looks pretty dang close to the original too! I wonder what his favorite part of his restorations are....probably piecing it all together at the end if I had to guess? Stripping the paint might be pretty fun too! This project was a cool one and a job well done!! 💕
