1930s Marx Lumar Automatic Scoop Powered Steam Shovel Toy Crane Restoration 4K

  • I purchased this 1930s Marx Lumar Automatic Powered Steam Shovel in September of 2021 on eBay for $79.50 after shipping and tax. I first saw one of these at a local antique dealers place and he didn't want to sell his. So I started looking for one needing some love and attention. I was extremely happy to find this one in such rough shape. It was complete minus one track and in terrible condition. The gear driven shovel did not work because of the wear on the gear shafts and the entire body was covered in rust. This video shows the first time I ever casted urethane rubber wheels and tracks, the process went really well, outside of some bubble and air pockets I got on the wheels, this was due to the mold rubbing out of rubber as the air purged, going forward I will definitely be giving the molds longer runners as a larger rubber reservoir, this should prevent any of that in the future. Also the color did not come out as expected and I assume I needed to use more dye as the wheels had a blue tint to them instead of being more black. I also put a summary in the beginning of the video, do you all like the summary? or should I leave it out going forward? Thank you soo much for the support. I'm getting a new lathe delivered in 6 weeks and then I plan on starting the Structo wind up tank. Have a great day! My favorite part of this whole restoration was making the rubber tracks and the green color of the truck.

I've enjoyed your channel for some time and I just have to say, you're the best restoration artist I've seen on youTube. I am a former nuclear weapons specialist (I used to work on the warheads) and spent 30 years in aviation as an Airframe & Powerplant mechanic, working on C-130s when I was in the USAF, and built the world's most powerful jet engine, the GE90, for almost 20 years. I find your care and procedural discipline to be unparalleled in your field. You exhibit the same kind of care I took when working on nukes, or when I was building jet engines. You'd have a fine career in aviation, with such a disciplined and professional approach to your work. It is so refreshing to see it outside of my old fields, where it was compulsory, mandatory, and next to safety, was the highest priority. I'm retired now, and hoped to continue working on old airplanes as a hobby. But, nine hand operations took their toll, and I can't make my hnds work with the finesse required, anymore. So, it is with all the more pleasure to watch your work: It fills a great void in my life and it is very satisfying to see how much care you take in the restoration -nay, rebirth, of these wonderful old toys. Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart.

Just watching takes more than an hour, I can't imagine how much effort and time you spent.
You've asked about summary in video description. I liked it.

I had an almost identical Lumar power shovel for Christmas in 1959 when I was 4 years old. It was in red and black livery. I still have it in the loft somewhere. It is in poor condition but NOT rusty. The rubber tracks have perished and the whole mechanism has broken e.g. the lower narrower boom has come free from the interior of the cab and you have to manoeuvre the boom and bucket by hand. I would love it if you were able to restore it to its former glory!
I have only just discovered your channel and have seen this and one other video so far - absolutely amazing work!

I look forward to each new installment. This one has been one of your best!!! Wow what a transformation!!! Nylon sure makes a mess of your CNC. So what is the next evolution? Press brake to start making new sheet metal parts for the ones pitted too much. Outstanding craftsmanship--what a talent!!!! Great job Chip. Looks like the junkyard is full so more to come!!! Can't wait!!! Thx for sharing your passion!!!

I love watching the process and seeing your skills grow as your workshop grows too! This turned out really nice and I think the blue tint actually makes the wheels look metallic so that works.
As for the beginning summary, it feels like a bit of a spoiler to me so I FFwd past it because I want to wait for the good stuff.

O bonito do seu trabalho é saber que o brinquedo restaurado esteve nas mãos de uma criança nos anos 30, é algo que fez parte de infância de alguém que viveu, envelheceu e não está mais entre nós mas será lembrado.

@carsonclark3140 I have collected hockey cards from when I was a kid. I have originals of Gretzky and Brett Hull, even Patrick Roy. I have am excellent understanding of what collections can be worth. But, then there are weaksauce things like this. It's only worth that much because people are silly enough to pay that much. Why is Apple or Tesla worth so much? Because they have fans, no matter what those corporations do, who will buy their newest products and buy the stocks up. There is perceived value and actual value.

I remember as a kid taking apart those toys to see how they worked. Often those tag would brake and couldn't put it back. Now he's restoring them 😅 absolutely love those toys. Not all the plastic flimsy stuff they make know in China. You want to make biodegradable environmentally friendly toys? Make them like we used to.
