I'm 40 and i will say that MJ is the greatest scorer ever and how he had to adapt to the game but still doing it in a graceful manner, was simply outstanding. Kobe was a great scorer in his own right as well
I'm born and raised San Antonio and I grew up hating Kobe and hated having to hear about how he was top 2 (and sometimes top 1) all time. Then I got older and everyone says he isn't even top 10. It's baffling. I began defending the man I hated because it turns out I had massive respect for him. This dude is the greatest player I ever saw live.
Born and raised in the Bay Area, Kobe destroyed my Warriors every damn time. Our home games were half full of Lakers fans. I hated him just as you did, maybe even more. And now I do the same as you, defending his legacy because people seem to have forgotten how huge of an impact he had on his team, the league, and the world. Kobe was a worldwide phenom nearly at the same level as MJ. When I traveled aboard, it was crazy to see people sporting Kobe jerseys. And then hearing him analyzing basketball post retirement…. I could no longer hate him and instead had to respect him.
It's the media and Klutch flunkies denigrating Kobe. The simple fact is there is none of this plastic manufactured GOAT debate with Kobe in the picture, so #2 had to be slid under the carpet.
2006 Kobe 35ppg on 45% 1988 Jordan 35ppg on 54% that's almost 10% better with a baby Pippen before he got even decent. Zero All-Stars too and stats show teams score MORE vs Zone defenses.
I never doubted that Kobe is one of if not the greatest scorer the game has ever seen. But what surprised me the most is that he still averaged 5 assists per game. I mean the teammates he makes those passes are Kwame Brown,Chris Mhim, Smush Parker, Devean George, Rony Turiaf, Brian Cook etc. and Odom being the only one that you can somehow trust lmao. It was mostly a 2v5 on a nightly basis for Kobe that year. I'd rather see Kobe do a tough fade away against 3-4 defenders than see Kwame Brown get a pass.

I have been pointing this out for over 10 years, and I am happy to see I'm not alone. The 2001 illegal defense rules change was a HUGE decision that few fans even know about. It is why all the great scorers of the 2000s have a sub 45% FG percentage (except for Kobe's 45.7%). And it is why the league ended up softening foul calls in order to create a higher paced, more offensive heavy game years later, giving rise to the 3-point snooze-fest we have today. Exactly my friend, i remember this season (as well as Kobe's 81 points night) very well, it has so much merit avg 35 points when you take that into account. I understand why the NBA softened defense afterwards but it like they cant get it right, either its this hardcore defense we had in that Kobe season (the 80s not withstanding, since player could get away with murder, players were being hurt for real)or the 3 point snooze fest of today were nobody even attempts to block for fear of being posterized.

I'm an MJ stan, but I've always respected Kobe. His ferocity, his competitiveness, his drive to win, they were all the components that made MJ the GOAT. He had what the kids call "that dog in him." He was the end of an era before Lebron, of guys who won through grit without a superteam, and wouldn't settle for losing as long as they had good stats.

This is a GOATED video for my favorite player. Thank you so much for all the hard work and research you put in for my guy Kobe. They looked at Kobe missing the playoffs as a total failure without a single thought about the roster he had or the conference that he played in. It was becoming tougher through his career going from 5-6 50+ win teams to 7-8 50+ win teams. He couldn’t afford to load manage because it was a requirement to win damn near 50 games just to make the playoffs. He was the true MVP of that year not Steve Nash. That’s like giving the MVP to John Stockton instead of MJ.
Stockton may have not, but Malone did win the MVP award the year the Jazz had the best record, even though MJ and the Bulls had spanked them in the previous season's finals and would proceed to do it again. As far as I understand, team success has always been a prerequisite and a crucial factor for the MVP, until Westbrook in 2016 with his triple double season as an 8th seed first broke the mold and then Jokic normalized this precedent by winning thanks to analytics as the 6th seed last year. But at the time, Kobe could have averaged 50 and he still wouldn't have been given serious consideration with his team being so bad. Nash, on the other hand, by turning a joke franchise around and leading them to the best regular season record on remarkable efficiency (50-40-90 splits) did have a legitimate case

Thanks for bringing this up , he also cares only about winning way more than stats I believe he had 2 other instances where he had 60+ after three quarters , but rested because it was a blow out , he could have been a stats analytics driven star like James , and gotten 3 games with 80 points , but choose not too. He outscored the finalist mavs 62-61 through 3 quarters I saw that game and believed ok this is the closest thing to MJ we have seen , best player of this era .

He definitely wasn't a volume shooter/scorer...that distinction goes to Iverson, but in his defense, he WAS the offense. I got Kobe #2 after Jordan in my top 5. LeBron is at 6 he ain't even in my tip 5.
if you're only looking at that one season, maybe. but for his career he was the brick champion 6x and the scoring champion only twice. when a player led the league in bricks 3x as often as scoring, the chucker label definitely applies.

When I first started the video and saw that it was going to say that his season was better than Jordans best I had my doubts. Your case on the adversity Kobe faced that year really has me thinking. TBH looking at Kobe's career stats I get why some don't view him as top 5 all time. His first few years and final few years did him no favors. The thing, though, is that from 2000 to 2010 Kobe was the GOAT. Watching him play live you realize he was facing defenses that were some of the best ever. He was constantly double, sometimes triple covered. A legend.
And when you realize too that he played during the dead ball era, which was by far the lowest scoring era, you realize how impressive his scoring actually was. Scoring 25 points then would be like scoring 32 this latest season.
@@facelessandnameless When look at how many shots per game he was taking it really isn’t all that impressive. 2005 Kobe took 27 shoots a game, which is the 3rd most since 1980 and the second most since 2000.

Thank you for mentioning his 07 season. In my opinion he was even more impressive that year than he was in 06. He had knee surgery during the off-season and began the season taking less shots and trying not to score that much. I remember him averaging around 27 points per game at one point… but the team was so terrible that he eventually had to shoot more and score more. And what resulted is, in my opinion, even more impressive than what he did during the previous season.
I agree Kobe deserved the MVP, without him, the Lakers were absolute trash. I still think the better individual season was Michael's MVP + Defensive of the year, but Kobe's season was criminally underrated

It’s really crazy once you put it into perspective that Shaq was always jealous of Kobe yet they somehow made it to 4 finals & the only modern NBA team to 3 peat other than the Jordan led Bulls.

It starts making sense over time, but it's upsetting. It's what I realized I hated about lebron. He's like the media's spokesperson and special little child who could never do wrong. His hype was used to not only sell sh*t, but also use his influence to speak on politics and other topics. So rather than be a good basketball player to be the best and win, it feels like he's in it for the clout. Like he talks about China, BLM, and a bunch of other stuff on twitter especially that has nothing to do with basketball, and parades about being the King. And it is followed making excuses and making him a victim, which is becoming very marketable nowadays. Kobe and Jordan were the opposite, and had an obsession with nothing but basketball and winning, and made no excuses. They diminished their friendships to an extent because the game came first, and they played through injuries and the like. It's as if they didn't care about the noise and were fixated on one goal. Aside from the other angles the media had to attack Kobe, they just aren't the archetype the media like. I still wonder though, because I know its a lot more than just that, but it's just a pattern that the media follows as a whole, and it goes way beyond just basketball.
Love the videos. So glad i found this channel. I think its fair to say kobe was the best tough to damn near impossible shot maker we have ever seen. People will say what about MJ. MJ was the greatest creator of shots. MJs creativity and athleticism opened up opportunities that werent there. Kobe had a gift of making something out of nothing.

One of my poker buddies bets 81 dollars, my other poker buddies did not get it, then I told them that I'm from Toronto and Kobe scored 81 on the Raptors. Yes. I think they are think they’re both the greatest and best scorers ever. Best being Talent and skill combined or talent converted into skill. We have enough footage now see exactly how Wilt played and dominated. Kobe, Durant, Allen Iverson, Curry, and Kyrie imo. Also West, Dirk, and Kareem.
I would put Wilt #1 because he DELIBERATELY cut his scoring to concentrate more on defense and assists for half or a bit more of his career. MJ is the only one that can argue the point though.

MJ is 40,5 points per game, 10 rebounds and 10 assists; WILT: 50,4 points per game, 25.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists. And we need to consider WIlt played more than 48 minutes per game, the others less. All are impressive but might actually just have all 3 on the top all time

Kobe at 27 basically got what he should have at the beginning of his career so it evens out to be quite honest because most draft picks that come in the league that high and that heralded are walking on to crappy teams. Him and Tim Duncan lucked out. We're going to be quite honest with how the beginning of their careers started
Kobe lucked out but Duncan didn’t. By the time Duncan was drafted, Robinson was a shell of himself and the team was just ok. Duncan was just so good that it didn’t matter. Shaq was in his prime and would continue to be in his prime until 2005. That allowed Kobe to develop without the pressure of being the franchise guy.

Why are you making an argument for pace of play without just stating the pace of play number per decade? That would be a very direct way of making your point (and then maybe after you can index the amount 25ppg scorers to each decade). This is a very solipsistic way of arguing your point because an east country argument is: sample size and outliers. There aren't ENOUGH 25ppg scorers (and why 25ppg+, seems like an arbitrary delineator) to really drive home your point without a pretty significant error margin. One could just as easily post the amount of TIMES a player this past season (2022/2023) score over 40 points or over 50 points in a given (it's a record high). Just state the average number of possessions per decade. Boom. And THEN we can make a proper argument. This is a very lateral way of making your point and not entirely convincing. I suspect the number of expansion teams in the 70s and 90s also warps the data in ways you haven't corrected for. My 2 cents.
Pace is not irrelevant, but can be overrated to a degree. Where a team gets 85 shots or 100 shots in a game, the star player is gonna get as many shots as he wants.
It's really when you get into some advanced team and player analytics that you get to really see how phenomenal of a player Bryant was. LeBron deliberately crafted his play-style like a kid who plays myPlayer on NBA 2k - just trying to stat stuff the basic stats as much as possible.
I’ve seen his teammates move out of the way so he could grab the rebound. Even bigs. And if you notice they always shoot off his passes even if it’s a bad shot. There’s more to stats than just numbers and most people don’t realize it.

When the teammates couldn’t make a move to get a good shot, they would pass to Kobe with like 4 seconds left in the clock and then he had no choice but to try to make something happen. Kobe didn’t have the greatest team that year but I actually liked those players. I rooted for them because on a stacked team, they’re bench players and now they have a chance to do something. Quality content as always. I can't really argue with your points here because it was the deadball/zone defense era he did this in. Super impressive. However, when you compare teammates, Jordan's 86-87 teammates were arguably worse than Kobe's 06 teammates. Odom was more talented than anyone Jordan played with other than Pippen, but his inconsistency kept him off all star and all-nba teams. Again, that's a terrible teammate and I give you that. But just look at the dumpster fire of a roster the bulls had his 37 ppg year.
Depends on where he was in his career. I think you put season 3 MJ in that same 05-06 season and he still averages 37. I just think MJ was more skilled than Kobe. That’s not to take away from what Kobe did that season. Skap made great points here.
MJ averaged 35 and 37 ppg two seasons in a much more physically defensive era..he was primarily driving to basketball and shooting mid range jumpers not reliant on 3s...by 2005-2006 was a much different NBA due to the new rules it was easier to score
The 80s defense was pretty much everything goes, it was almost murder lol, it doesnt mean it was a better defense. Also video just told you that on MJ's 37 ppg '87 season (which i consider his best individual season ever) the avg points per game was 110 and the avg possession was 101. On this 06 season the avg points was 97 points per game and 90 avg possessions per game, those are BIG significant difference numbers that tell you how hard was it.

I never doubted that Kobe is one of if not the greatest scorer the game has ever seen. But what surprised me the most is that he still averaged 5 assists per game. I mean the teammates he makes those passes are Kwame Brown,Chris Mhim, Smush Parker, Devean George, Rony Turiaf, Brian Cook etc. and Odom being the only one that you can somehow trust lmao.
It was mostly a 2v5 on a nightly basis for Kobe that year. I'd rather see Kobe do a tough fade away against 3-4 defenders than see Kwame Brown get a pass.

I have been pointing this out for over 10 years, and I am happy to see I'm not alone. The 2001 illegal defense rules change was a HUGE decision that few fans even know about. It is why all the great scorers of the 2000s have a sub 45% FG percentage (except for Kobe's 45.7%). And it is why the league ended up softening foul calls in order to create a higher paced, more offensive heavy game years later, giving rise to the 3-point snooze-fest we have today. Kobe played during the toughest defensive era in history, and no one seems to know about that. I am so happy to see all of it plainly covered in this video. God bless you Skap.

Exactly my friend, i remember this season (as well as Kobe's 81 points night) very well, it has so much merit avg 35 points when you take that into account. I understand why the NBA softened defense afterwards but it like they cant get it right, either its this hardcore defense we had in that Kobe season (the 80s not withstanding, since player could get away with murder, players were being hurt for real)or the 3 point snooze fest of today were nobody even attempts to block for fear of being posterized.

I'm an MJ stan, but I've always respected Kobe. His ferocity, his competitiveness, his drive to win, they were all the components that made MJ the GOAT. He had what the kids call "that dog in him." They looked at Kobe missing the playoffs as a total failure without a single thought about the roster he had or the conference that he played in. As far as I understand, team success has always been a prerequisite and a crucial factor for the MVP, until Westbrook in 2016 with his triple double season as an 8th seed first broke the mold and then Jokic normalized this precedent by winning thanks to analytics as the 6th seed last year. But at the time, Kobe could have averaged 50 and he still wouldn't have been given serious consideration with his team being so bad. Nash, on the other hand, by turning a joke franchise around and leading them to the best regular season record on remarkable efficiency (50-40-90 splits) did have a legitimate case

But ESPN hated Kobe and, unfortunately, this game from the 2005/2006 seasom never gets as much attention than it should.

Tim Duncan, who was a paint clogger but not as bad as Shaq, crunched the spacing so much for Lebron that he couldn't get to the rim at will and because of his poor outside shot, he was ineffective. This routinely got exposed for several years (and really until this day - you beat Lebron by forcing him to shoot jumpers and keep him out of the paint).

TBH looking at Kobe's career stats I get why some don't view him as top 5 all time. His first few years and final few years did him no favors. The thing, though, is that from 2000 to 2010 Kobe was the GOAT. Watching him play live you realize he was facing defenses that were some of the best ever. He was constantly double, sometimes triple covered. A legend.
And when you realize too that he played during the dead ball era, which was by far the lowest scoring era, you realize how impressive his scoring actually was. Scoring 25 points then would be like scoring 32 this latest season.

Thank you for mentioning his 07 season. In my opinion he was even more impressive that year than he was in 06. He had knee surgery during the off-season and began the season taking less shots and trying not to score that much. I remember him averaging around 27 points per game at one point… but the team was so terrible that he eventually had to shoot more and score more. And what resulted is, in my opinion, even more impressive than what he did during the previous season.
I agree Kobe deserved the MVP, without him, the Lakers were absolute trash.
I still think the better individual season was Michael's MVP + Defensive of the year, but Kobe's season was criminally underrated

It starts making sense over time, but it's upsetting. It's what I realized I hated about lebron.
He's like the media's spokesperson and special little child who could never do wrong. His hype was used to not only sell sh*t, but also use his influence to speak on politics and other topics.
So rather than be a good basketball player to be the best and win, it feels like he's in it for the clout. Like he talks about China, BLM, and a bunch of other stuff on twitter especially that has nothing to do with basketball, and parades about being the King.
And it is followed making excuses and making him a victim, which is becoming very marketable nowadays.
Kobe and Jordan were the opposite, and had an obsession with nothing but basketball and winning, and made no excuses. They diminished their friendships to an extent because the game came first, and they played through injuries and the like. It's as if they didn't care about the noise and were fixated on one goal.
Aside from the other angles the media had to attack Kobe, they just aren't the archetype the media like.
I still wonder though, because I know its a lot more than just that, but it's just a pattern that the media follows as a whole, and it goes way beyond just basketball.

Why are you making an argument for pace of play without just stating the pace of play number per decade? That would be a very direct way of making your point (and then maybe after you can index the amount 25ppg scorers to each decade).
This is a very solipsistic way of arguing your point because an east country argument is: sample size and outliers.
There aren't ENOUGH 25ppg scorers (and why 25ppg+, seems like an arbitrary delineator) to really drive home your point without a pretty significant error margin.
One could just as easily post the amount of TIMES a player this past season (2022/2023) score over 40 points or over 50 points in a given (it's a record high).
Just state the average number of possessions per decade. Boom. And THEN we can make a proper argument.
This is a very lateral way of making your point and not entirely convincing.
I suspect the number of expansion teams in the 70s and 90s also warps the data in ways you haven't corrected for.

Pace is not irrelevant, but can be overrated to a degree. Where a team gets 85 shots or 100 shots in a game, the star player is gonna get as many shots as he wants.

It's really when you get into some advanced team and player analytics that you get to really see how phenomenal of a player Bryant was. LeBron deliberately crafted his play-style like a kid who plays myPlayer on NBA 2k - just trying to stat stuff the basic stats as much as possible.
I’ve seen his teammates move out of the way so he could grab the rebound. Even bigs. And if you notice they always shoot off his passes even if it’s a bad shot. There’s more to stats than just numbers and most people don’t realize it.

When the teammates couldn’t make a move to get a good shot, they would pass to Kobe with like 4 seconds left in the clock and then he had no choice but to try to make something happen. That affected his fg % a lot.
Kobe didn’t have the greatest team that year but I actually liked those players. I rooted for them because on a stacked team, they’re bench players and now they have a chance to do something. Not many players get such an opportunity.

Quality content as always. I can't really argue with your points here because it was the deadball/zone defense era he did this in. Super impressive. However, when you compare teammates, Jordan's 86-87 teammates were arguably worse than Kobe's 06 teammates. Odom was more talented than anyone Jordan played with other than Pippen, but his inconsistency kept him off all star and all-nba teams. Again, that's a terrible teammate and I give you that. But just look at the dumpster fire of a roster the bulls had his 37 ppg year.
Charles Oakley has an argument to being better or just as good as Odom. Both rosters were trash

Depends on where he was in his career. I think you put season 3 MJ in that same 05-06 season and he still averages 37. I just think MJ was more skilled than Kobe. That’s not to take away from what Kobe did that season. Skap made great points here.

MJ averaged 35 and 37 ppg two seasons in a much more physically defensive era..he was primarily driving to basketball and shooting mid range jumpers not reliant on 3s...by 2005-2006 was a much different NBA due to the new rules it was easier to score
The 80s defense was pretty much everything goes, it was almost murder lol, it doesnt mean it was a better defense. Also video just told you that on MJ's 37 ppg '87 season (which i consider his best individual season ever) the avg points per game was 110 and the avg possession was 101. On this 06 season the avg points was 97 points per game and 90 avg possessions per game, those are BIG significant difference numbers that tell you how hard was it.
@fungus_am0nguz644 thats my point exactly is the physicality of the era ...teams like the bad boy pistons and the commonly flagrant style of play and the fact that MJ was dominating like that was unreal...by mid 2000s is when the rules started to change and they got rid of hand checking and started the transition to a more offensive less defensive NBA

And the defense played in that era, a flagrant then would mos def get u a big suspension and maybe involuntary manslaughter. However as this video just showed us, that 87 season 110 avg ppg 101 avg possessions, 06 season 97 ppg 90 avg possessions, numbers aint everything but they also dont lie.
