    I made these shortly after watching the video... it gave this old guy some tasty memories! Mom made her own biscuits, back in the 50's and 60's, but I like using the Grands. Only a slight change for me, I used a knife instead of a corer to slice the apples (since I had to cut core bits off anyway, like you did), and dipped only one side of the biscuit in the cinnamon/sugar mix... folded the apple piece inside, and THEN dipped the outside in the sugar. If I was going to deep-fry these (which I'm not!) I would not dip the outside at all until after the frying. These taste wonderful, great memories! I don't know what Mom called them, though... just so goood!

    Did this with pears, apples, and peaches. All were good but to rate them would be apple #1, peaches #2, and pears #3. Going to try it with apricots next. Thanks for the idea. I am also gluten-free so I used gluten-free bisquick with greek yogurt as the biscuit. Was delicious.

    They remind me of apple fritters. All donut shops in my area makes them. These are an easier version. Will try them.

    • @DebsKitchen
      @DebsKitchen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Welcome, Dean!!! For me, the problem with Apple fritters from the donut shops in my area is that they tend to taste kind of greasy. No greasiness here and I can make 8 Uglies for the cost of one fritter. 👍 But one of the best things about these for my family is the fact that I’ve been making them for 30 years and my kids still get excited about them. Food traditions are like glue…I hope that we can help you start some new food traditions for your friends and family. - Deb

I know not everyone lives where that’s not a real option, but the park works just fine too. They love and appreciate them, and give them much needed food/nutrients, especially in the winter. Same with a good deal of kitchen scraps, orange peels, carrot ends, etc.

    Hi Deb, new to your channel. The name caught my eye. The Uglies was a hook for me. I have made apple dumplings in the past, but they were very time consuming because the recipe I was trying showed them all decorated with dough shaped into leaves. Mine did not turn out as lovely as the pictures on the recipe, so I was disappointed. Still tasted good! I made then for Thanksgiving dessert and really wanted them to be perfect. I can’t wait to get to the store, I have everything I need except for the biscuits. I did wonder why you didn’t use parchment paper sprayed, so clean up would be easier. I liked the idea on one of the comments about putting a caramel inside with the apple too. Looking forward to your next recipe!

    Try this: Use half a biscuit (and a suitably smaller chunk of apple) for each one. Instead of putting them on a cookie sheet, stack them in a bundt pan - I like the silicon ones for this -- in layers. Over each layer, pour a little mixture of melted butter, brown sugar, and walnuts. Baking time is probably around 40 minutes. I think most folks call this "monkey bread". I also do some with home made chocolate truffles in each piece. Dark chocolate and a small cube of cream cheese is also tasty. Experiment -- have fun with it. Apple, cranberry, and brie anyone?

    • @DebsKitchen

      Hi Beth and welcome! I’ve never tried it, but I suppose you could. My one concern is that they might get super juicy, since they’re already really soft, and leak out. If you try it, I’d suggest a couple things. Be sure your pan is well oiled or, better yet, line it with parchment paper in case you have major oozing. That should save it from sticking. The other thing is that I would be super careful to make sure your apple is completely sealed inside the biscuit with no gaps or holes...again to avoid the risk of leakage. Do you have cinnamon sugar biscuits? I used to get those, but they aren’t available here anymore. If you have them , they work well, too. Another suggestion would be to use the biscuits you are able to get and spread them on the inside with a little bit of honey before adding the apple and cinnamon/sugar and rolling them up. Enjoy experimenting! - Deb

    I would not want a firm Apple. I was born and raised in Maine which is Apple country and I think I would cook these a little bit in some cinnamon sugar and then once they cool make them. It shouldn't be like eating a slice of apple it should be more like an apple dessert like a turnover or an apple pie.

      I get it, Elizabeth! We have our own little “Apple Country” just 15 minutes away in beautiful Oak Glen, CA. It’s a wonderful little community of orchards that grow many varieties of apples along with raspberries and pumpkins in season. Been a regular visitor for over 40 years and just love everything about it! For me, I like the apple in my Uglies to be a little firm and definitely not mushy…these are kind of between a fresh apple and the soft texture of an apple pie. Your idea of cooking the apples first would surely be a delicious twist, but would be a little less kid friendly, if you wanted to have the young ‘uns help you make them. 😉 You have a lot of great ideas…I’m anxious to hear how yours turn out! Have fun!!! - Deb

    Looks a bit hard!!!?.

    • @DebsKitchen
      @DebsKitchen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome C. Lance. The apple is not at all hard, but is still a bit firm. If you prefer your apple to “cook down” more, you could simply alter your choice of apple to something like a Rome that will get really soft. My family just likes the flavor and texture of a Fuji or Pink Lady. Have fun experimenting with the apple that gives you the flavor and texture that you like! 😊 - Deb

    Seems like easy recipe and will try. However, I have a difficult time watching cooking videos done by people with long hair. In this video her hair actually touched the apple when she used the corer. Please tie back your hair. I do not care how you look; it is all about the food.

      Hi Thelma and thank you for your comment. Actually, these Uglies are very moist, both from the apple and from the buttery biscuit. If I have leftovers (and that’s a BIG if), I need to keep them refrigerated due to the moisture that could promote mold growth. I know that sounds gross. Sorry! The good news is that they always disappear WAY too fast for that. 😉 - Deb
