It's a great choice of song, too. _Betray Me_ was one of two songs on "Dust" I rated full five stars; the other was _Catching Fire._ It has been almost six years since I last listened to "Dust," so I think I'll check it out again. Cheers Michael! To answer you question, I reckon there is nothing unusual in my approach, technically speaking. But okay, you opened this can of worms so I am going to give you an ample answer. Brace yourself! Hahaha. Whenever I like a song, I analyse it first to see if it is actually fun to play. Sometimes the song is a killer but the guitar parts are meh. After I decide that I am going to do a cover, I just sit down with it and figure out how to play the parts. Depending on a song, this can be either fairly quick, or a bit more involved. Occasionally (especially with fast solos), I would slow a song down to make sure that I can hear each note. In some cases when unsure, I even use EQ to drop non-guitar related frequencies and see if any new information surfaces to my ears. At times I look up live performances to double-check if there's anything else I might have missed. After I lock the parts in, I then start practicing performing the song from start to finish without mistakes. When I get closer to feeling that I am OK, I start recording the takes and then review them to see if there's any sloppy bits that I need to focus on....fast-forward a few years (hahaha), I set up a camera, press record and have fun with it :-) Usually at that stage I am fairly confident with the song and can just "relax". There are, however, some tracks that have slippery moments here and there and anticipating them coming up can take that relaxing time away hahaha. This funny thing called brain. Like, I would be recording a great take and then somewhere towards the end of a song I'd screw up, which means that the entire take is a throwaway...it definitely tests my anger management skills!. Anyway, I typically record at least 3 full takes that I am OK with and then review and pick the winner out of those. There have been instances when upon review I was still not really happy with my performance and had to go back to practising. I hope this answers your question! I know I made it sound like a complete overkill, but over the years, gradually, I got better and better (I think) and faster at doing all this. Some of my covers were done in about 2 days from start to finish, and some I ground at for almost 6 months! But yeah, I'd say average is 2 weeks of effort. But then I start to pick even more challenging songs and the struggle continues hahaha. I guess I will never be happy!
@RobarMusic thabk you for the ample reply. This helps a lot! I'm looking to move into this kind of phase of my guitar training so, I'll be sure to consider the elements of the approach. Essentially, it seems as if ear approach and theory as necessary is the primary method, with supplemental aid via video etc. As needed. Initially, things take a long time but persistence and better song selection (based on instrumental significance rather than confusing the killer song for a worthy guitar endeavor, etc.) naturally speed up process and attainment of repertoire.
