CruWear is _THE_ shit. i am a stainless snob and am _obsessed_ with VANAX but i only want CruWear for my heavy-use EDC knives now.
I too am a Cruwear convert. This steel is absolutely amazing. Its only supposed weakness is (not being fully stainless) is highly overstated.
@@libertylover81 agreed. Few people need a "salt" knife every day (or ever).
Whoever wrote/recorded this background music has a clear affinity for two things in life....video games and octavarium era dream theater
I have found 20 mins to put a 20 degree 600 grit stropped edge on cruwear is just about perfect for a working man's knife. Great vid.
Thanks for these tests. They’ve shown me the significant time polishing isn’t worth the mildly better edge retention. I also love the way toothy edges seem to grab and pull materials into the blade
respect for rolling both edge tests into the same video. I thought I was going to get blue balled.
Anybody else on the East coast watching this at 4am? Damn you Pete!!!
Awesome video great job!
A Ray me
A Ray I'm on the East Coast. It's 7:00pm.
Nice, now I love my cru-wear knife even more
Cru-love! Looks nice. I just picked up a Bravo 1 in cruwear from Bark River Thanks for the videos Pete
I appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos. ...All under the watchful eye of an up and coming artiste, too!👍🏽
At 6:30 , even the guitar solo in 2x still is amazing.
Those creely blades are just perfect as far as design goes does exactly what a knife is supposed to do which is slice efficiently and its the perfect size for 99% of tasks.
love the tech details with graphs and whatnot
I'm in love with Cruwear. It hits such a nice balance. Loved this vid.
Imagine what Bos could do with Cru-wear or Magnacut.
When the Knife fails to shave the cat we stop the test.
Mate... you are dedicated !! Thanks for sharing. Best wishes from Nelson, New Zealand.
You should build a robot to do the cutting. You're going to get carpal tunnel with all these super steels.
hehe, I'm sure theres an end date in sight, or at least once I've got a few more big ones I can have a holiday and let the data settle
You may say this with some degree of jest, but the reality is that how cuts are performed have considerable effect on edge retention. This was both discussed and studied extensively back in the heyday of rec.knives.
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors are u gonna do the work sharp edge on cru-wear so you can put it on your list? Or I should say did u and just didn’t get around to it. A lot of us wanna know where that’s at with the 20 degree convex edge. Thank u
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors
I mean it would actually be accurate considering the more you cut the stronger you will likely get meaning the tests will be inaccurate.
Go view his review of the Buck 110 S30V. It's not the steel but the heat treat.
After years of watching your videos I realised on shorter blades the length of edge you use is less than one inch but it’s more than 1.5 inches on longer blades.
is there a list of the steels that benefit from toothy or polished edges or a formula of elements that have a best guess of ideal edge type ?
Pete's favourite book, Andrew Denton's "Enough Rope"
Looked at the test results, ever plan to cut test VG10
Sly Law VG10? Thats been tested about five times plus a couple times with the finer edge (see recent 14c28n vs vg10 vid)
I'm going to save and try and get one of those 121 blades so I don't have to worry about resharpening a blade after cutting my biltong into bit size pieces ;)
I'd guess the edge that you put on it depends on what you are cutting.
The cutting ease of a toothy edge is really nice for every-day-stuff.
If you however work with wood a lot, a toothy edge just feels ugly. Polished edges, in this case, are more comfortable, because you don't feel as much drag while cutting, but that's a question of luxury. The overall edge geometry will be more important. Still a thing to consider though.
You made it in the annals of knife gods! It is official! Canonized today, 03/11/2018 at 12:12 PM ET. The pipe organ and guitar solo in this vid shall ring your entry to eternity! All hail Pete! 😉😆😁🤟🤟😇🔥🔥
Dad, dad. Video cuts……. puts everything into perspective.
Mirror for looks ,toothy for ease.
Pete, think about using a thick & fuzzy 'dead cat' over that mic to better suppress wind noise. I wasn't thinking of Basil, of course.
Good test mate
great job pete. keep it up. we in usa love your vids.
What is the craziest mix of knife material
Some serious prog rock goin on in this vid 🤟
I could have sworn this was some obscure track by Emerson Lake and Palmer. So, The Black Mages: Final Fantasy VI, that's interesting. Great channel btw.
My benchmade 275 adamas d2 steel behaved similar but more dramatic on fine edge cutting performance invoked anger and coarse edge's monster of a cutter.
Love it! Keep up the great work, man!
You are great when it comes to knives steels. No doubt one of the bests. So which steel do you recommend for an outdoor 4-5 inches fixed blade knife? And do you think CPM Cruwear is better than CPM 3v on same category of knives?
My favourite is cpm 3v but I am not an expert, I have 2 Cruwears not yet in my hand.
Thank you in advance
Hey mate, what do you think of them now you have had some time?
did a quick strop bring the edge back on this steel as the rex 121 did?
Pete! What song is this?
I personally like polished edges better I think they cut better onley time i use a toothy edge is if the steel needs it or if I don’t feel like putting a polished edge or am experimenting
If the steel takes a high polish it also looks fucking nice! :D Only problem with this is that I sometimes baby the knives with edges that are hard to improve, because they took so much effort and are not as easy to replicate for me. (fixed blade guy here, so edge lengths are often over 6", where it starts to get annoying)
Depends of steel, blade geometry and use. Toothy edge on most high vanadium steels usually works better for slicing while polished is better for push cutting.
Jovana Pavlovic idk I find a mirror edge to be better for pretty much
bp69 some steels like m390 and zdp189 for example benefits from mirror edge but like i mentined before high vanadium steels like s110v, 10v, s125v etc. are better with coarse edge. Point is to sharp steel on the edge not destroying carbides with polishing them.
Jovana Pavlovic yes I get what your saying and I put I more toothy edge on them I’m saying in my expirence most steels prefer a mirror I put a 600 grit edge on steels like that Incase your wondering
That boss theme!
What is the backround music?
What are your thoughts on the Creely knife now that you've had some use on it?
So... 1000 grit with cru wear?
Hmmm... I think I may have gotten a little upside down since the Rex. Everything seems a bit weak now lol.
Keep using a toothy edge, overtime your edge will be bent and or thicken overtime. Stropping and edge helps keep the edge stay sturdy.
I notice very well with my eyes that the sharpest knife tends to bend faster than the toothy ones. Honing helps align the edge.
What grit did you use to keep toothy edge
You could stop right at 400 but that's just my opinion obviously
Pete can you please do the same with S110V?
svir4U he's already done that!
Opinionated Grug he did it only with toothy edge
svir4U toothy for slicing, polished for push cutting. Overall i prefare tooty for s110v
Just curious, why did you choose 17 degrees? With that sharp of an angle, I wonder if it’s dull or if it just has a rolled edge?
chrluc 17 degrees is nowhere near too frail, for a test like this, excepy for on really weak steels (ie: untempered). High end kitchen knives are generally 9-10, and a lot of spydercos have been coming with 15-17° lately from the factory
I don't know what to think, of how it compares to 3v, 4v, they all had different edge geometries, so each result exists in a vacuum, at least compared to each other.
Apart from saying they are similar, I wouldnt verge into better, worse, etc either
Who's the maker?
Hey Pete, I'm a big Nick Shabazz fan who recently started watching your vids. I think they are really interesting and helpful, btw. Just curious, what exactly do you mean when you use a "toothy edge"? 😄
sharpened to 600 grit (or another mid to fine stone grit) and then left, rather than going on to the polishing process
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors okay. That's what I thought, I just wanted to make sure. Thanks! 😄
Great video but I do have to argue that edge holding ability is a result of heat treat more so than the composition of the steel and using a custom knife vs a production knife the custom should win all day as there is far more attn paid to the heat treat....
Yes, imagine if they put Cru-wear or Magnacut on a Buck 110 with a Bos heat treat? 🥴
@@oinnsheathen5684 I'd be first in line to buy if they did lol
@@kevinAuman1 oh what a day that would be.
Hey can’t believe no ones asked you this.... which is your favorite FF? I’m a sucker for 8 & 9 myself...
9 and 12. 9 for story and characters, 12 for world and gameplay
Do your kids ever say, "Daddy, why are you so mad at rope?". :)
Good test ,
What's tougher cruewere or 4v?
Hmm very comparable i feel. I havent done enought testing to say for sure!
@@CedricAda ok cool you mention that cruwear is in between 3v and 4v. Which might make it tougher then 4v?
...And the cat never moved.
I am not trying to spoil your game, but to be more reliable you should repeat the test at least 3 times and compare the averages.
Red Angry Bird great idea here man maybe start a channel and do a video like this with whatever steels you have available I’d subscribe
@@monkeyfaceII Statistics is the name of a course (subject) taught to first year College and University students of any degree.
People who had passed at least the first year will agree with me. Obviously you have never heard of a student's t-test, have you?
There are many easy to understad videos here in YT about t-test. Cheers 😁👍
Guess it is true that a polished edge holds an edge longer
Liked the cutting, but much preferred watching the (background) pavement artist,,, ha ha...
hahah yep, we all worked on our endeavours today
Yeah, I was distracted by the chalk art as well 😁
Did worse than the Buck 110 in S30V steel.
so what`s the moral of the story here?
annoying
No u
