www.LetsMakeAr... - This week we're learning to paint a sunflower. Lots of simple techniques to practice, so forget the florals and let's focus on the one big floral (I'm saying it like florAL so it's funny)

Today was my 200 straight day painting in a row! I wanted to do some monumental for today. Then I realized, I want to do something that I love. And sunflowers are one of my favorite flowers. Thank you everyone at Let's Make Art. I could not have painted 200 days in a row without your tutorials and your inspiring confidence in me to paint. You are amazing and you fill my life with so much joy! I'll still keep painting but I will take a little break first.
CONGRATS!! What a neat accomplishment you've achieved. We feel lucky that we have had the opportunity to be part of your creative journey. Thank you for painting along with us. Enjoy your break, you absolutely deserve it!!
Love your personality an whoever is in the background makes art work relaxing an your explaining is so great. No your tell the truth all about your artwork ❤
Life saver for sunflower painting.
I love the second flower. It just looks richer and not so sharp. You are fantastic for teaching us how to paint. Thank you so much.
I love painting/drawing sunflowers. This one is bright and attractive.
Beautiful😍 I love your style you're very fun to watch. I'll look forward to more of your videos. Thank you
Very fun sunflower, thanks for sharing!
Painted along and had fun. Thanks for a great tutorial on painting a sunflower.
I love your style and your laugh. Don’t stop laughing! It is a joy to paint with you.
🤗
Was scouring the internet for sunflowers in watercolour. Your painting was the best of the lot. Thank you so much! Subscribed.
Hello, I haven't watched the video yet BUT..... I DID just get my box. This is my first subscription box from you AND my first subscription box EVER. OMG! I pretty much squealed at everything as I pulled it out. Of course my weenie baby was trying to pull everything out at the same time so some of that squealing might have been scolding, it's all the same to her. She finally settled on nabbing a few "worms" from the box and running off with them happy knowing she was naughty and got away with it🐶 needless to say, I love this box and all you do to make them for us. I was also very moved by the postcard you included and will definitely send that off to her. Is that something all boxes have cuz I love it. So now I have to get all your other previous kits or my life will never be complete haha and now to watch the video🤗🌻
Elizabeth I am SO happy that you are happy with it! We put so much effort into it, and it makes it all worth it knowing our customers our happy
Just love your tutorials and manner of teaching! You always give me the confidence that I can do it!!
I love it! Thanks for demonstrating.
Sara thank you sooo much for Let’s make art. I just got my first box this month and I can’t wait for more. ❤️
Yay! Thank you Jerri!
A lion sounds like a very scary but fun project! After watching you break down other animals into doable steps, I’m sure that you could coach us through the king of beasts!
so helpful good rules. What a wonderful disposition you have your delightful, thankyou.
Thank you so much!
I LOVE you guys!!! You are so fun to watch & learn from!!
Tutorial was exactly what I was searching for. Stroke by stroke almost. What is missing in my opinion, is more focus on the paint colors and the mixing of them. Enjoyed it all.Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Foreshortening explains a lot to me. Explains perspective when subjects appear differently when twisted, i.e not seen from an aerial view.
Al cracks me up. He totally punted on answering any more of your leading questions... ;-)
I love both of them!! They are beauuuuutiful! I love youuuu too!! So lovely!!
I love the second painting the most! It jumps out at me more! So pretty and I can't wait to try!
Sara is so cute I'm dying
Yesss I love this! Your tutorials are amazing! I’d love to learn peonies and more flowers!
I love the banter between the two of you, it makes the video into more than just a simple, dry tutorial. Very engaging, thank you for taking the time to make these!
Thanks for the nice tutorial
You're welcome
Love your explanations of color theory and that you only use four colors.
I was scared at first to paint it but I did it anyway. It turned out really good. Proud of myself.
So proud of you! Remember it is only paint and paper. If it turns out wrong no biggie!
Just came across your sunflower painting.... Love that you make it fun yet very informative. Thanks !!!
This was a great tutorial,so informative! Thank you
You are so welcome!
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial.
Thank you for this tutorial! I had attempted to paint a sun flower several times before I found your site, and was never happy with the results. Now I know where I was going wrong.
Wonderful!
Nice job! The last was so beautiful.
Thank you! 😊
best sunflower tutorial around.
I got my kit and can't wait to get started!! Thanks!
Just loving this. Ordered my first box, if it would just get here and then to get started.
YEAH!!! This is the best!
I love it too Al ! Sarah it’s beautiful.
Al sucks.
We love you, LMA !!!
love the lion idea!
We'll do it!
Love your videos! Thank you for bringing joy....
a friendly FYI I am sure you already know ....Purple and orange make a nice brown for sunflowers and add black to darken if needed...but i like your brown as well! Great tutorial and channel1 I subbed!
Wonderful teaching. Thank you. I was drawing along with you. I love how you used so many colors to make your sunflower alive. My sunflower looks like it is looking down. Is there a way to correct that? Or what should I have done?
Sometimes sunflowers heads are so heavy they do drop down a bit. It is hard to say with out seeing it. Take a look at your highlights and shadows maybe? Changes are there is one just like yours out in nature.
@@LetsMakeArt That's so awesome to get a reply so fast! Thank you. I posted my "Droopy Sunflower" on IG. I thought putting some darker yellows and orange on the top leaves might set it back so it doesn't look so droopy. It looks a little better. Thanks for your suggestions about changing the highlights and shadows. Love your videos because you explain what you are doing. It seems like you are having so much fun!
Soo nice👌
Enjoyed the sunflower - it improved when the center was finished. Do you ever do a landscape from a photo? Thanks.
Do a lion! My dad loves lions and I’d love to paint him one!
These videos have been saving me during quarantine! I think I’ve painted about ten now. Thank you, especially for making the outlines free. As soon as life is normal again I’m gonna do the subscription kit. Thanks again!!
Loved it!
Great tutorial, can’t wait to paint it. Let’s paint a lion!
I'm in, I'll see what I can do!
Love u guys
Awesome sunflower! 😍 I hope I could try painting one too.. I love your enthusiastic personality! You just gained a new subscriber! 🤗
you're so sympathetic 💕
I love the second flower!
Love this! You are a great teacher and a joyful one too Julie. Can't wait to try this and I might use salt in the middle seed area for some more texture. It is helpful when Al asks a question that helps to clarify a step; however, I find the banter to to be distracting and makes the video longer than needed. (Sorry.) Overall, great lesson, thank you so much for sharing your talent. 🎨🤩
Oops, don't know why I called you Julie when your name is Sarah!
Thanks for the feedback Terry!
I also find the banter distracting and makes it too long.(I’m sorry too). I love your paintings and instructions.
SO happy to find you! What a lovely teacher and process. Can't wait to get my first kit and get started. (And a hardy YES to the Lion idea) Thank you
Wonderful!!
Many thanks!
Hi Sarah I love your art & tutorials. But I can never find where to download the drawings ? Can you help please ? Thank you 🙏 so much. Gina x
Hi. Sorry if this has been asked and answered, I'm lazy and didn't want to scroll through all the posts. What watercolor paper do you use in your videos, and what is included in the kits? (Strathmore cellulose paper or Arches cotton paper?) Thank you. I can't believe I just found your channel! I consider myself an intermediate watercolorist, but love learning from lots of different people.
Hey! We would have just liked a little more direction on making the petals. We love your channel and we love being able to have a paint class from home!
Noted!
I'm still intimidated BUT you make "art" fun. I'm hoping that I can have as much fun when I actually put my brush to the paper. I want so badly to be happy with what I am doing. Fingers crossed.
A colorful rooster would be so fun! A lion would too
Great tutorial! Loved the leaf technique. First attempt...ok. Will try again....my aspect...foreshortening... is off. Thank you!!
Hi, I love this tutorial, can I please ask what paper you are using for this? I have tried so many different kinds and they just swell even with the smallest amount of water but yours looks so smooth. I did try the link but couldn't find it. Thank you in advance,....your work is so inspiring x
Hi Sara! We use Canson 140 lb watercolor paper in this project. You can find it on our website here: www.letsmakeart.com/products/xl-watercolor-pads
@@LetsMakeArt that's so helpful, thank you so much. Happy painting :)
Im a leo I would like to do a lion, but I would really like a fun colorful lion to go with the elephant we painted
Yes! That is what I was going to say! Let’s paint a rainbow lion!
THAT is an amazing idea!!! (totally doing it)
YES to Lion.
I'm following your tutorials and you're great. What paper are you using in this tutorial
For most all of my painting I just use the Canson #140 - www.letsmakeart.com/products/xl-watercolor-pads
I would love to know how to paint a birch wood forest.
Beautiful! thanks for the tutorial. what palette are you using?
actually found the info on your website ;)
i cannot believe she doesn't have subscribers
I have done 4 sunflowers so far and they look beserk. trying again.
Hopefully this helps!
Love your tutorial. Tried the link for the kit but nothing there.
Thank you for letting us know that link is broken. You can access this kit on our website here:www.letsmakeart.com/products/sunflower-kit
What brand of liquid watercolor are you using?
Sarah is using Dr. P.H. Martin in this tutorial.
why am I so much fun? Because to overrule my brain I have to have a glass of wine before I paint or I analyze and think too much!!! And that my friend is the real reason I used the wrong paints last night HAHA
haha you're doing it right!
what paper are you using?
Al, you just be you!
I am using a sketchbook paper to do this.. I don’t seem to get this effect.. my flower looks blotched and it’s hard for me to get those layers!
We definitely recommend using watercolor paper to create the desired effect. Here's some of our favorite watercolor paper: www.letsmakeart.com/search?view=shop&q=watercolor+paper&Social&
what if you wanted to create a color background could you do that now?
I like the petals the best. I probably have blurry some where in my art. I try to avoid that
Who is this Al?
I DID IT
Al needs to go away, he is incredibly annoying. Sara tries her best to "yes-and" but he is constantly killing the conversation. If he has nothing to add and is as annoyed as he seems, he should find something else to do.
100000% agreed. Al has got to go.
Nonsense!
PLEASE do a lion!!!
I'm new to watercoloring and been following along, it's been fun. However I've noticed you do many paintings from other artists especially one Emma L. Imo I think you should at least mention you saw this on TH-cam or give credit to her for example turtle, Poppy's, sunflower, feather, rooster, iris, tropical sunset etc. Maybe everyone does that I think you should mention that. Also I have a question about your watercolors are liquid and not in tubes, pans or cakes. Are you using ink? No offense I'm not being a "hater" I enjoy your tutorials but I just noticed you this something seems off.. maybe it's free domain and everyone does this.
She uses liquid watercolors. Check out the website, Letsmakeart.com
ok yeah now i really wanna see a lion. Himb a good boi.
You are in luck! Sarah actually released a Lion tutorial last April. You can find his tutorial on our TH-cam channel or on our site here; www.letsmakeart.com/products/lion-kit
al is fuckin hilarious, also this was very helpful ♡
Tom Toale hahaha, i can see why you'd feel that way, i like their interactions, to me it's both helpful and entertaining
you said post them. ok, where do I post them?
You can share photos in our Facebook group: Let's Make Art: Watercolor, on our Facebook page, or on Instagram by tagging us @letsgomakeart We love seeing your paintings!
Let's Make Art Cool! Never knew about that.
The tutorial is great and loved the finished result. But the bloke’s comments are just too distracting and don’t add anything .
Thank you for the feedback.
I realize this video is from 2018, but the background voice was distracting and annoying. The tutorial was helpful as it was a step-by-step. The actual colors used and brush size would have been useful.
Its ok to laugh...
Could have done without the nuisance male voice in the background.
she is so talented but the banter with that guy keeps me from watching a lot of times. sorry to say.
right + she talks too much
She doesn’t talk too much, he talks too much.
Honestly, I just want to learn how to paint a sunflower, your video is one minute painting, 3 minutes banter with some disembodied voice. Can you shorten the chit-chat with him up a bit, please? I spend half the video fast forwarding.
I thought the same the first time, but the interaction is part of her joy which makes her instruction attractive and fun to watch.
If the interaction was with someone other than Al it probably wouldn’t detract from the video so much. But it’s still a fantastic video.
U r teaching good but too much talkative.. I don't like your companion fellow interrupting.. Don't talk to him.
I sincerely hope you ditch the guy Al in the background. He seems very negative and self centered, I literally stopped painting along with this video to comment because he was so annoying - making your video about him with his commentary. “Sunflowers are actually way not as pretty as you think they are, they’re a ditch flower.” like, is he joking? Why would he say that in your sunflower video? You’re a wonderful person, I hope you find someone positive and thoughtful like you. Hint: It’s not him.
Gosh you talk too much I’m just trying to paint A sunflower
Hi
Well this was my first water paint ever idk
How do I add a pic
coba besok2 dikurangin ya ngomongnya, fokus ngelukis aja
Sorry, soooo much of bla bla bla
I like your paintings but you talk to much. Keep it simple.
Sorry for that
I love your paintings though
Fuck off Gigi put the video on mute or just enjoy. Everyone appreciates her explaining the process.
I second the opinion of to much talking to your companion, it's to distracting, also you said that the colour amber is orange, but no, I've checked on the internet, it's more closely related to yellow, but it's in between yellow and orange, I was confused when you said it's the same color. For these 2 reasons I have found another TH-cam artist to follow.
