- Classic Game Room HD reviews SAGAIA from Taito for Sega Genesis. This SHMUP space ship shooter is called Sagaia but is really Darius 2. Darius II, a 1989 arcade game from Taito, is available on numerous game consoles (including the Sega Saturn) but found this new name on our Mega Drive. This 1991 release for the Genesis is one of the most challenging space ship shooters (or SHMUPS) on the Sega Genesis which packs numerous levels and a "choose your own adventure" style of level progression. Darius from Taito is well known for being challenging, fast paced and full of sea creature inspired space ships and end bosses. This CGR review of Sagaia (Darius II) has gameplay from Sagaia on Sega Genesis showing Sagaia Darius 2 game play in action. It is a horizontally scrolling space ship shoot 'em up video game with that old school arcade style.

Sagaia was also released on the Gameboy, and also has an arcade revision (basically rearranged levels from Darius II), plus this game is also on the Saturn and one of the PS2 Taito Memories compilations, albeit under Darius II. Oh, and it's also on the Master System.
That clapping sound is used a lot in Wolfteam games
Man, the guy who made this game has a serious fear of marine life.
One of my all time favourite games! I had it for the Sega Master System first and could never pronounce the name right either! haha
I love the surreal feel of the Darius series.
Great review as always, Mark. Wish I still had my old copies of Choplifter for Master System, and Axelay for SNES to donate to you, the latter having reminded me a lot of playing Darius Twin in the arcade back in the day.
my favourite hori shooter on the MD / Genesis!
This really makes me wanna play an old-school shoot-em-up, even though I've played hundreds before and never enjoyed one of em, and even though I swore I'd never play one again.
Damn his catchy enthusiasm!
I have this for the Master System. There is sprite flicker all over the place. But for some reason i'll always remember the sound made when you pause the game.
Oooohhhh! I remember this game. This is my all time favourite side scrolling spaceship shooter.
Yeah, this is definitely an essential shooter to pick for your Genesis or Mega Drive. It is on the Sega Saturn, but you have to zoom in and out a lot to get the right size picture, and even then you can't see enemies coming at you far enough in advance.
It's really great for the Sega Master System-if nothing else, to show off the graphical capabilities of that system.
i love this game! i used to play this one so much when i was a kid
YaY! I waited a review of this game!
Very nice one, IMO this is much better than Darius Twin, but also harder, due to losing all your weapons while dying, and the bosses after the 3rd branch of zones are really resistant against your pea shooter.
anyways, very nice review Mark!
There is also a very good 8-bit port of this game on the SEGA Master System where the graphics are virtually identical to the 16-bit Mega Drive (Genesis) version.
I have the Sega Master System version of this game but I've never had the chance to even play it!
I was playing that just yesterday! Sadly, it's not as good as the Megadrive version. Lots of concessions made to the less capable tech (enemies not appearing alongside mid-level bosses, backdrops being absent during boss battles - that kind of thing) but it's not terrible. In fact, you have to admire the attempt to make a faithful port.
Nice review. A lot of fish related enemies. going to lookup storyline now.
please review G. Darius for the PS1. It was also released on Taito Legends 2 for the PS2.
I just won Afterburner Climax on PS3!
When I was 7 I had this game memorized like nothing. Now, I brain fart at how fast these enemies swarm the screen.
LOL @ the clap sound effect. El Viento over did it back in the Genesis/Megadrive days.
On the dual-screen arcade machine this game looked and sounded great. But indeed a hard game.
tough tough game. i played and beat it once, definitely hard as balls great shump- up, and love the flying fishes!!!
Is that the WindSquid at 5:00?
Can't wait for your Sega Nomad review.
talk about a game developer knowing what the sega genesis is able to do and fully mastering it wow looks like they did a great job on this game
nice review. and my totally amazingly awesome wife bought me a Nomad for Christmas this past year. did i mention she's awesome?
i finished this game maaaany times long ago. now that i'm 40 it kicks my ass even on easy. wtf?
I know what you mean. I rocked on Darius Twin on the Snes when I was a kid. But now at 39 I can’t even get pass the first stage on easy.
And this video is where it all started, check it out Brain Damage Shots, Sagaia, Punk. Our unofficial Sagaia music video...
Holy crap you have the nomad I can't to see your review of it.
If you think Sagaia on the Genesis sounded nice, then you should listen to the Arcade version or the Saturn port. The original composition will blow you away.
Same. I attribute this phenomenon to the fervor of youth.
You got a Sega Nomad, unbelievable
Saga + Gaia = Sagaia, I suppose.
MARK show us your collection AVGN style. I thought I had a shitload of games but you still surprise me with new things I didn't know existed.
Damn those deep sea creatures.

Hey, that's a pretty accurate way of describing how I play this game, lol.
A Nomad!!! You must review it!!
cool review...i own the sega master system version, pal exclusive
So so I, a friend from the UK sent it to me years ago.
Weird, Taito did that to Super Nova (aka Darius Force) on the Super Nintendo too.
love the theme
I still have this game but my Favorite shump is Arrow Flash
Sagaia, difficult?
C'monnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Great review as always ;)
I remember when Amuk was reviewed on Twitch.
@ArbyWanKenobi He's always diggin' the shmups! ;)
Good video. :)
just ordered a copy and then after seeing the screen between levels on here.... wtf! 28 levels? Im gonna have a stroke! Have you beeten this? Great review as well.
You don't go through all 28 levels, but I believe there is a hidden boss rush code, but I believe only the Japanese version has it in it.
I love the Darius games, but the weapon upgrade system is so unforgiving. Especially in Darius Gaiden. Interesting to see how they handled that crazy aspect ratio of the arcade version.
Please review Hellfire for the Genesis.
i had this one on game gear and it looked almost similar. Dont know how that little machince made it to manage this many sprites on the screen but it did and i passed truogh the game like 5 times on the easiest level. But it played the game for almost a year nearly daily!!!
Maybe i was weak gamer but thunderforce 3 isnt half as difficult as Sagaia!
Anyway i loved this game and i'll never forget those uncountable hours of fun playing it
I have to say that, despite the needless name change, that this is not only Taito's best arcade to home conversion for any of their titles in the 16-bit era, but that it is also one of the best arcade to home conversions of a game prior to the 32-bit era from ANY manufacturer! I only wish that Darius I got the same treatment. Oh well, maybe some genius homebrew guy could make it happen?
What was wrong with Super Darius on the PC Engine CD-ROM²? I thought it was a pretty solid port of the original. Darius Plus wasn't bad either, but as the card version it lost half the levels and the music had to be digitized, but otherwise the game-play was identical.
The NEC PC Engine CD-ROM was technically a 32-bit system and, as such, was not a true 16-bit system like the NEC TurboGrafx 16/PC Engine, Lyle Petersen. Yes, Super Darius was an awesome game, and this game also came out for that system in an enhanced port as well (and I highly recommend that you play both games), but consider this...the game that you are seeing here was made barely a year after the arcade game, it was on the then new Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, and, aside from the widescreen aspect of the original game, sound effect AND visual wise, it is one of the most impressive games on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive this side of Pier Solar and the Great Architects.
There is a homebrew Darius 1 Mega Drive port, done by a Japanese guy, he's never released the ROM for it though. There's videos for it on TH-cam, including playthroughs for it.
@@Bloodreign1 , actually, from what I hear now, it appears that Sega and Taito are indeed releasing Darius I as an exclusive game to the Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive Mini, and, yes, it will be an officially released game to the USA. I guess dreams do indeed come true.
M2 made it happen, not sure if they bought the code off of the Japanese guy who did the homebrew, or made one themselves. My guess is, the guy got paid for his work in the end. It's a fine port too.
hey, a Sega Nomad! sweet :D
This game is one of my favourite shooters
wow youre awesome at this game o.o
Reminds me kinda of R-Type on the Original Gameboy which is an awesome game
You should upgrade and get R-Type DX for the Game Boy Color instead, Myles Militis.
The correct pronunication of Darius is da-RYE-us.
It is how the title is written in Japanese katakana - ダライアス
I used to play 'Empire of Steel' on my megadrive. Has really cool bosses but i could never beat the final one. Would be nice to see Mark review it.
@MrLazyEyes the difficulty and the 2-p mode
I was able to beat this without dying as a kid.
Practice makes perfect.
had A.M.O.K. for the pc a while back think i still have it somewhere, was a decent game i might try and dig it out again, shmups need to make a comeback, i've been playing the gradius collection on psp recently, which is great btw
cool music
somebody heard of another genesis shmup called gaiares? That one was pretty sweet but incredibly difficult! I still have my copy for the genesis.
Hey Mark, you really need to check out a sega game called Bio Hazzard Battle. Its a space shit shmup, but you can choose 4 different ships, which have different power ups. The ships, are more like lil flying mutant things really... and one looks like a cross between a stingray and a platapus lol. The music, the levels, and the game play are all awsome. Very cool boss' and random other enemies. Seriously check it out!
@LupusRexRgis *yawn*..i feel for you!
@LupusRexRgis i had/have both and consider the megadrive to have much more retro appeal than the more modern snes sound.the snes obviously is more lush in graphical and sound quality but the megadrive always had a sharpness and was more edgy.one of the last consoles apart from the handhelds imo to have propper chip music rather than striving for c.d ish realism..a lot of the problem with the output on the megadrive was that it was only mono unless you jacked out of the headphone socket.
This guy is good :D
i am starting to think that mark is the king of videogames..someone else agree?
I lol'd at clapping.
1:46 its the fire fish of death
👍👍👍
@BillyCauseyjr They're mildly rare, look it up on ebay.
Thumbs up if you like CGR, Sgea, and Shmups!
@killa2514 It's like Contra in space in a space ship in a completely different world.
5:05 WIND SQUID!
@duhmez hehe..This guy from ClassicGameRoom has a million times the wit of avgn imo.
Hey Mark, you must review F-Zero!!!
Greetings from Brazil
@AnarickTheDevil He has 2 model 1s, a model 2, a model 3 and a nomad, I think that's unbelievable haha
@mondrometal That's right!
@duhmez I dunno about "straight game reviewer," he always seems to review games he enjoys. I know there are exceptions, but he gives little negative feedback. It's more like he shows us good footage of games that we should know more about.
@mondrometal i do
@SNESosT that´s why he is the best, he is a normal guy talking about games,, xD
Wind Squid was here?

I can never get through that big fish boss surrounded by balls!
Wind Squid @ 5:00
Much better. Why didn't I come up with that?
(rhetorical question)
this is like contra in space
*clap* *clap* *clap* *clapclapclap*
Game is OK I'm playing on tab I'm still looking for the upward motion game easier to play played it in the 90s Coz its more nice and don't know the name....
Oops. I guess I really messed up this time.
That's a lot of fish.
yes thats darius 2, hey u know that the arcade game stretches the playfield acros 3 screens
Actually, it only does it across two screens in the arcade, and ditto for Darius as well, SkiffaPaul.
@citizenhal or 'ser-giyer', really fast
@duhmez lol, I think I know who you won't mention.
“Gary’s.” Hah!
He blew up the Wind Squid 5:00-5:13
@tattleboad I highly doubt that.
This game was too hard for the 7-year old me, but I have it on the SMS, this version is actually a lot better.
What if I told you that its prequel is coming out as a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Mini exclusive game?
Review F-Zero!
@mondrometal In what ways exactly? : l
dang expensive game. i'm hesitant to spend more than 5-10 bucks on one of these old games. I've seen MUSHA going for like 50 or more, (glad I never sold it!)
I member when MUSHA was only 50 dollars.
What was wrong with Darius 2? People knew Darius, had I known this was Darius 2, I would have bought it when it came out!!
