I've watched this channel for so long that your intro is just fucking awesome dude. So relaxing and calm but nostalgic at the same time I don't know it just hits me every time
Because it seems like it is an accumulation of at least 4-5 sounds from the past. Some VHS publisher intro dub sound (I vaguely remember or seem to), the SEGA voice of course (but in female), the "blimp" from SEGA when you turned the console on, some victory theme & the swords/katana sounds from some games I believe. It is very well done.
I think the small character sprites in the first Rastan worked in its favor since it made the levels feel more "vast", adding a lot to the atmosphere of the game, while everything feels a lot more "cramped" in Rastan Saga II/Nastar Warrior due to the giant character sprite.
I forgot about the "Nastar Warrior" alternate title. It's not quite Rastan backwards. So close, though, it can't be an accident. Just weird. But then, this comes from Taito, who developed Violence Fight, and that game had comic book style onomatopoeia when characters got punched with nonsense words like "bogon" and "dogoon" and "gogoon" So it's kinda in Taito's wheelhouse to be weird.
It's not that the sprites are smaller, it's that the backgrounds are taller. There's a lot of climbing and falling to do in the first game, the verticality makes the levels look and feel like a world. In Rastan II, you only move right and they're just *levels*. Taito would get the vertically and 'world' aspect right again with Cadash the next year, with the same size sprites as Rastan II.
Don’t know why the first one never got a 16 bit console port. Could’ve easily been ported to Genesis or SNES. I think even PCengine could’ve done it sans the parallax backgrounds.
I think the PC port is 16 bits, at least it runs on DOS, a 16 bits operating system and I remember playing it on 286 with 1mb of ram. I agree the first one should have been ported to Megadrive and SNES, it would have been an amazing port in 16 bits consoles.
It will always have a special place in my heart, as I had it as a teen. It wasn't so horrible back then. Big sword, claws. Yes. It sucks though, I see that now. It hasn't aged well.

Hello there! I'm the current speedrun world record holder for this game on the Genesis, a Sega Kid from the very beggining of my existence, and a silent follower of your channel. Thank you for doing this video, it's a completely accurate rundown of this game and its many, many flaws. This games brings a lot of nostalgia to me, regardless, I used to play it a lot when I was a kid (mainly because I liked the music) but never got too far, and was finally able to beat it as an adult, realizing in the way that it was a super quaint game. I'd define it as "You've played Super Mario? all right, now picture Mario with a sword and shield and a lot less platforming to do, that's Rastan Saga II". Playing devil's advocate, I consider that it's kind of a shame that it turned out this way, the arcade version came out in 88´ if I'm not mistaken, and it's definetly the superior version of this game, it runs way smoother and the soundtrack gets to shine thanks to the "longer" duration of the levels. Also, fun fact: the Genesis version is actually harder than the arcade: on top of the limited continues some enemies have been buffed, and some bosses have improved attack patterns.
Rastan III is easily one of my favorite arcade games. I was so happy when, after hours of playing, I discovered "Video Options, Side-by-Side (gapless)". Love your videos man!

I dumped a fair few quarters into Nastar Warrior at the bowling alley in my hometown. I was drawn to the game, despite kind of knowing it wasn't a great game. Also, I'm not sure how, but I intuitively knew it was a Rastan sequel because I recognized that Nastar was Rastan spelled backwards. I never played the Genesis port, but having enjoyed the arcade game at the time for what it was, I'm glad I didn't drop $50 on the home port. It probably would have been one of the small handful of games I would have ended up trading off or selling after I beat it.
Rastan looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan The Barbarian. Rastan II looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger NOW, forty years later. "Augha blagha blaaaws! I have Austrian-ritis! It's not a toomah! I should be so lucky! I'm so frail and ugly even my maid won't touch me!" The arcade version of Rastan Saga II at least has an awesome soundtrack. Zuntata was in full force when they made the music for this game. They seemed to take a vacation when Taito made Ultimate Qix for the Genesis, which is a pity as it's fifteen thousand times the game Rastan Saga II is.
