I had never paid attention to this game before, as many of other games you reviewed, I have re-discovered them thanks to your work, thanks a lot. I watch every new review you post now.
I have this complete in box. The manual says the main character and lone surviver during initial attack of the four is named Terri and she is the main heroin. The team consists of: Greg - US air Force Ken - Canadian Orbital Patrol Ted - Mid Eastern Alliance Air Force Andrea - French Space Navy ---> Terri - Air & Space University, Valedictorian, Main Heroin of this story
I found a pretty high quality reproduction of this game I bought for $20 used. Its got actual screws and a holographic style chip board. Pretty fun game as I cant afford the original.
I like to take my codeine and get warm and fuzzy and watch this review and sip on some poppy seed tea : ) In the summer i like to bleed my poppy bulbs in my garden and watch this review while smoking my PAPAVER SOMNIFERUM opium in my Chinese dragon pipe : )
The music from this game and also from Thunder Force 3 I think are the main reason I became a musician later on in my teens. Amazing tunes! I was about 11 at the time and I would play these games for hours and spend even more time with the headphones on just playing the music from the options menu. I miss those days! Today I make futuristic epic-like electronic rock with a little bit of guitar and it is on my channel if you want to give it a go.
Interesting to note that this is one of the few videos on Mark's channel that doesn't begin with his own background music. Because Toshiaki Sakoda's epic soundtrack still holds up and cements itself as the most kick arse BGM to date!
Thanks for all your videos including this one. Watching these is the equivilant feeling I get of watching Saturday Morning Cartoons when I was growing up. I rate all your vids, including your dog vid, 5 Stars.
About the soundtrack. I agree. Back then in 1990 I was thinking, "THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THIS TYPE OF DETAILED MUSIC TO BE IN A VIDEO GAME!" I was still in the mindset of the Nintendo Entertainment System, and my Sega Master System. Both of which I still own. I also still have this game. :)
This 7 part review made me spend quite a chunk of money on a Japanese mega Drive collection on eBay mainly because it contained this game. Thank you CGR.
I remember watching this video when i was like 12, around 2009 or 2010. I learned a lot about the Genesis from CGR, because my brother growing up had an SNES, N64, and Playstation. The one system he did sell off was a Saturn so I didn't have much exposure to Sega stuff.
MUSHA was one of the first Genesis games I ever owned. I bought it in early 1991...I was in the 8th grade. I never owned more than 6 carts at one time, because I liked to sell my games back to the store I bought them from and use the money to buy new ones. I kept this game until the Playstation arrived and I sold all my Sega stuff. It remains to this day, one of the very best games I've ever played.
The music... the music... the music. This sound track was by far my favourite on the Mega Drive. The art work is slick and the fast paced game play takes place on back drops that the current gen consoles would wish they had!
Damn! Missed out on this as a kid. Funny how advertising made such a big difference back then in the awareness of game releases. If it wasn't for a friend of mine who originally moved from the States to Canada who also purchased the game, I would have never even known about the great Phantasy Star I.
Hey Mark, you probably get this a lot, but you're the first place I ever heard about Musha and I checked it out based on your epic review. As soon as I saw it was seven parts and one of your first Heavy Duty episodes. I just played it for the first time and I aced the first level (on easy... shh) once I realised how to pick up little buddies (on my second try) then died after 5 secs of lvl 2 when the fire button changed on me unexpectedly! I love it though, it really is one of the greatest game
good old times .... Musha with a MK-1627 = Retrogaming Nerds jackoff think i have to blow of the dust of my old Megadrive ^^ thank you for your outstanding awesome reviews .
This games kicks ass and was one of my favorite games on genesis, I thought how cool this game was even after 15 plus years, can't believe it is worth over 200 bucks...damn wish I kept all my old genesis stuff
After having seen this, I immediately tried the rom. It totally blew me away. The music and gameplay are second to none! I just ordered the Japanese version for my modded megadrive. Pricey but well worth it. Btw Mark you do realize this review is the reason the game is so expensive nowadays right? :)
SEGA also had a completely different sound effects scheme from NINTENDO. SONIC, MUSHA, STRIDER . . many of the sounds were like sound efx echoing inside a bowl or something. It was really cool. It made SEGA gamed distinquishable. I could stand in another room and be able to tell if I was listening to a GENESIS game or a N64 game.
DANG IT ALL!!!! I posted on this video a while back saying I still had the game in it's case and all. Well, I've moved about 11 times in 10 years.. possibly more. And I guess move after move I finally lost the dang game! Now I'm SUPER PISSED. I went on Ebay to look for copies and you're right. They're extremely rare and expensive. I still have my Genesis. And I will not give up poking around my boxes to see if I over looked it. Listening to this music makes me want it even more.
Compile rocked the house on every console they produced a shooter. M.U.S.H.A. fans must try Spriggin '91 on the the PC Engine CD. Hell, Compile made some decent action / adventure games like Govellius: Valley of Doom on the Sega Master System. I truly miss Compile.
It's interesting what this guy deems a good game! I was more into robo aleste, but I only played that because of my first introduction to the console shmup Scene super aleste for the snes
The pilot is actually a female named Ellie (Teri in the English versions). The original Japanese title is called Warrior ALESTE: Full-Metal Ellinor/武者アレスタ: フルメタル エリア.
MUSHA , Earth Worm Jim, and STRYDER distracted me away from NES long enough to make me a SEGA fanatic. Not to forget about Altered Beat which I already had on my Sega Master System, and SONIC for Genesis. The unique music and sound effect alone in all Sega Master System and Sega Genesis games were enough to captivate my attention away from NES. NES games always seemed to have a white outline around all the graphics and the only game they pushed graphics on was SM3. I needed more than 1 game.
As far as the red spread bomb-shot power up goes, its best to only level it up to 3, if you level it up all the way, the black center sucker pulls enemies too close to you and they almost also blow your ship up or power you down. I have played this game hundreds and hundreds of times on Kega Fusion emulator. Great, outstanding fucking game!!!!!!!!!
ahh, didn't know that. the only genesis games i have (i've got a european mega drive myself) are indeed from the earlier period. thanks a lot for pointing that out, i appreciate it.
I never knew what an expensive game I had up in my closet. I still have my Sega Genesis and all the games I had from Earth Worm Jim, Stryder . . and yes.. MUSHA including the Box and instructions. :)
i fully aggree, this game is the best shooter ever made. Especially the music, which we copied on tape and listened to all the time. btw, musha means warrior in japanese.
I was a SEGA Genesis guy and I have never heard of this game until today! Shame on me for missing it! It reminds me of Vapor Trail. The music is tight but best...Castlevania Symphony of the Light comes to mind. Good video thanks!
@Writtenjustice He means among shooter fans. The average person OBVIOUSLY has never heard of it, but true shooter fans have. Most are OBSESSED with it, that's clearly what he meant.
@mistertitanic No I keep forgetting to look. There are 3 boxes full of stuff in my closet , I know it's in one of them. I'm not selling it if and when I find it. It's a gem. Besides I bet they re-release it eventually with so many of these downloads coming out on Xbox Live Arcade. I have the newest Sonic which is awesome, Earth Worm Jim which rocks, and I'm about to get this SEGA variety pack. Xbox is charging for a single game, but they didn't realize there are like 15 games in it.
Not to mentiont hat emulators aren't always 100% accurate, you just can't expect Streets of Rage on Gens to play exactly like it would on a Sega Genesis, for instance. BTW this game's soundtrack is so kickass, it may be the best Genesis music I've heard, and the Genesis had a LOT of great soundtracks despite its inferior sound hardware, Sega and co really knew how to use that sound chip!
I still have my copy. The music was great and I love the ending credits where it showed a totally smashed up Dire51. But there was a hint of a sequel. What happened to it?
ya, it just came out on the wii shop channel for 800 points ($8.00) thats a good deal. the shop channel prices thier games by how old they are,& by how big they are, not by quality. so it's a good deal.
I played this game for hours on end even my dad who is old fashined and frowns on Ipods and game consoles and cell phones would cheer me on. I was lucky I didn't know that this would become a great classic. Thanks for posting this I hope they dont remake it at the risk of sound ding old I hate it when there is cultural mining like the first decade of the 2000's nothing really new. Not nearly as new as the 80's or 90's. I guess we need to be at peace in order to bring the best in our culture
Sad thing about MUSHA being so valuable is that while I own the cartridge from back in the day, I'm pretty sure I threw away all of my Genesis game boxes 15 years ago to save room. This was before the retro game collecting boom, and I didn't think about how I probably cut the value of my rare MUSHA game in half.
I miss CGR
rip
One of the first TH-cam channels I ever subbed to
🥺 me too
Golden age right here
And now it's back!
I had never paid attention to this game before, as many of other games you reviewed, I have re-discovered them thanks to your work, thanks a lot. I watch every new review you post now.
I'd love to play this game, but I need my car.
Play it on the Switch
I have this complete in box. The manual says the main character and lone surviver during initial attack of the four is named Terri and she is the main heroin.

smokeyvv you must be hurt financially because of that purchase
This is still the greatest review you've made, it shows you really loved this game!
I found a pretty high quality reproduction of this game I bought for $20 used. Its got actual screws and a holographic style chip board. Pretty fun game as I cant afford the original.
Streets of Rage II really pushed the Genesis sound chip. Probably my favorite video game soundtrack in the 16-bit era.
me and my brother worship MUSHA and yes the music is amazing
Best soundtrack ever! Amazing Game, It's nice to see M.U.S.H.A. get some much deserved love.
I have it sitting in my genesis right now.
This is your best reviews you ever done it is why I am a fan of yours thanks CGR.....
The music was composed by Washija. WASHIJA!
This is one of those games that plays best when the volume is cranked as loud as possible.
I like to get really, really, stoned and watch this review.
hahahaha I just opened this page, really stoned right now
I like to take my codeine and get warm and fuzzy and watch this review and sip on some poppy seed tea : ) In the summer i like to bleed my poppy bulbs in my garden and watch this review while smoking my PAPAVER SOMNIFERUM opium in my Chinese dragon pipe : )
I like to smoke crack and watch this video backwards
I like to trepan myself and directly massage my pineal gland to this review
Man hearing those songs is making me flash back to my early high school years when I'd get home from school and play this game constantly.
damn i love the music for this game. and the noise the eye makes in the intro... biiiiing!
The music from this game and also from Thunder Force 3 I think are the main reason I became a musician later on in my teens. Amazing tunes! first cgr video of the YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!! happy 2011
I just bought this game off ebay im so happy!
Do you miss your car?
I just bought this game off of aliexpress.com, a repro cart for only $5 😂😂😂
“Musha” is also Japanese for “warrior”.
Every Aleste game from Compile is simply awesome :)
This looks like a great Compile game.
The music reminded me of the Zanac and Aleste shooters that were also created by Compile.
Alisia Dragoon soundtrack is good too. And the game is excellent. You should make a review of this game too.
Just found this game for $40 at a used game store. I bought it without a second thought! Excellent game so far :D
Woo 7 part review. I hope when you review Shinobi III you do the same!
This 7 part review made me spend quite a chunk of money on a Japanese mega Drive collection on eBay mainly because it contained this game. Thank you CGR.

Just came to the Wii Virtual Console, yay!
his review is spot on, have had MUSHA since 1990 still bust it out once every year or so, it does never get old
what beautiful theme music
MUSHA was one of the first Genesis games I ever owned. I bought it in early 1991...I was in the 8th grade. Wow, Japanese palace on wheels as a boss... I need to play this game.
Who’s watching with me in 2019? CGR rocks!!!
The music... the music... the music. This sound track was by far my favourite on the Mega Drive. The art work is slick and the fast paced game play takes place on back drops that the current gen consoles would wish they had!
I just found this game locally and got it cheap. I didn't know this game was very rare. It's going for around $80 on Ebay. Awesome!
Damn! Missed out on this as a kid. Funny how advertising made such a big difference back then in the awareness of game releases. 1 of the very best of Sega genesis!
You're good in this game man :P
"Little buddies" in shmups are called options, after the ones from Gradius.
good old times .... Musha with a MK-1627 = Retrogaming Nerds jackoff
think i have to blow of the dust of my old Megadrive ^^ thank you for your outstanding awesome reviews .
This games kicks ass and was one of my favorite games on genesis, I thought how cool this game was even after 15 plus years, can't believe it is worth over 200 bucks...damn wish I kept all my old genesis stuff
This game is now almost 30 years old...
This game is fucking badass.
Cool ! I have this game somwhere on a compilation catridge for the Megadrive. Very awesome game.
After having seen this, I immediately tried the rom. It totally blew me away. The music and gameplay are second to none! I just ordered the Japanese version for my modded megadrive. Pricey but well worth it.
Btw Mark you do realize this review is the reason the game is so expensive nowadays right? :)
i had never heard of it, but now i want it! hurray for the genesis/mega drive being regio-free
Wanna speed up your MUSHA ? Hit the start button and press right. You will see more red triangles on top of the screen and it makes it way faster.
Congrats friend! You did good! I once got a copy of Boogerman for the Snes for $5, realizing later it was worth roughly $75.,
It sounds like super speed Valis III soundtrack. Awesome!
SEGA also had a completely different sound effects scheme from NINTENDO. SONIC, MUSHA, STRIDER . . many of the sounds were like sound efx echoing inside a bowl or something. It was really cool. Mark, we need MUSHA reviewed again -- this time in 1080p!
Found a complete copy of M.U.S.H.A today at Goodwill for $3.99, and I still can't believe it!
good thing, that. party time!
(and thanks for taking the effort -- twice)
The pilot is actually a female named Ellie (Teri in the English versions). The original Japanese title is called Warrior ALESTE: Full-Metal Ellinor/武者アレスタ: フルメタル エリア.
one of my favorite games of all times. some of the best music in a sixteen bit game or any game for that matter. this game is the shit!
@LokiV its actually a theme from the game so unfortunately they will never use it for other reviews obviously because that was five months ago.
I think that the sound of certain enemies exploding have the same exploding sound effect from Jackal on the NES.
MUSHA , Earth Worm Jim, and STRYDER distracted me away from NES long enough to make me a SEGA fanatic. Its worth more now eh hope you kept holding onto it
You can buy this game on Virtual Console now.
It looks pretty dawm awesome so I will most probably do it.
You sound way different compared to more recent videos. Did you decide to make your voice deeper ?
THIS GAME is the very best game for the Genesis, in my opinion. Thank god for emulators, or I'd never have the chance to play such a badass game.
i fully aggree, this game is the best shooter ever made. Especially the music, which we copied on tape and listened to all the time. btw, musha means warrior in japanese.
Imagine adding The Soundtrack, From This Game to Outrun!
I was a SEGA Genesis guy and I have never heard of this game until today! Shame on me for missing it! It reminds me of Vapor Trail. The music is tight but best...Castlevania Symphony of the Light comes to mind. Good video thanks!
I Played Vapor Trail,on The Sega Genesis
Funny thing is I didn't realize it was rare until later. But yeah I was quite proud of myself after that.
It's a gem. "This game has a copyright of 1990, making it almost 18 years old."
And that's when I realized I was officially old.
Just searched up MUSHA on Ebay and my jawed dropped to the ground.
MUSHA, thunderforce3 and lightening force... best shooters on the genesis and some of the overall greatest.
Thank you, for this very informative review!
BEST GAME OPENING SONG EVER!! THIS GOT STOLE BUT ILL BUY IT AGAIN.
@LokiV that's not their intro- that's MUSHA's soundtrack its beast mode
I still have my copy. The music was great and I love the ending credits where it showed a totally smashed up Dire51. But there was a hint of a sequel. What happened to it?
I can't believe this game goes for over $100. I found my copy in a pawn shop for $8 2 or 3 years ago!
This looks awesome!
I fully agree. I used to rip this game a new one every time I played it.
I'm still going through your old back log of episodes. You may have retired the show, but I'm still enjoying it. :)
He finally brought it back!
At a game resale shop, I didn't even know how much it was in demand, I just wanted to play a new shooter like Raiden Trad.
ya, it just came out on the wii shop channel for 800 points ($8.00) thats a good deal. the shop channel prices thier games by how old they are,& by how big they are, not by quality. so it's a good deal.
You should check out Gun Nac for the NES. It's pretty much M.U.S.H.A. for the NES. One of the NES's most underrated gems IMO.
watched video. just bought a copy for $92.00 cheapest copy online. cant wait to play it
Where are parts 2-7?
^This
i never seen this game before, but looks very good.
I have to say this. I hate shooting games. I suck at shooting games... I LOVE M.U.S.H.A. Not like. Love!
I guess we need to be at peace in order to bring the best in our culture
they need to add this game to the next genesis collection game
I did so, and IS AWESOME
a very great game, and i say this only the first time i played it :D
Sad thing about MUSHA being so valuable is that while I own the cartridge from back in the day, I'm pretty sure I threw away all of my Genesis game boxes 15 years ago to save room. This was before the retro game collecting boom, and I didn't think about how I probably cut the value of my rare MUSHA game in half.
7 parts? you REALLY like that game
"This game now has a copyright of 1990 on it, now making that 18 years old."
This video is about to be 15 years old.
