ATC over Madrock...Why did I make the switch and how to make the ATC better than a Madrock?

  • The ATC is a better option for rappelling especially if you are using 8mm rope.

Remember folks climbing is dangerous, if you decide to do so please consult an expert. Don't mimic any of my modifications and do not mimic my climbing methods. Again, seek professional advice before climbing!

Sorry to say, I'm going to mimic your method here. This looks like one of if not the safest methods I've seen. I haven't gotten the hang of (no pun intended) one stick climbing yet. Not sure if it's my equipment or just me, probably the latter. I'm still four sticking it for now, but rappelling down is the easiest and I think the safest way out of the tree no matter how you get up there. I have a heck of a time getting my foot into an aider. I've got an Ultimaider and amsteel aiders. I'm using Muddy Pro sticks, so maybe they just don't set the aider out far enough from the tree. Whatever the cause, I struggle with getting my foot properly into the aider when I'm hanging in the saddle for one stick climbing.

This is good but get rid of the auto block. The ab forces you to tend rope at the ATC and can be a pinch point for your fingers. You want to tend your brake behind you with your brake hand. The top prusik is there as the safety so no real need for a safety to the safety. Just keeping that brake hand free from the area of the ATC reduces risk of losing fingers should you miss handle the brake too close to ATC. Food for thought, not a recommendation or advice. 😏

I live in a world with no sticks, sight tapes & a climbing/rapelling system that is what I've been looking for over the last 5 years. I will go over it thoroughly when I have more time. I have to drive through snowy roads this morning.

Andre awesome set up. From a mountain guiding/ climbing stand point the only thing I’d recommend is once you get to hunting height and are going to hunt have the auto block engage the pivot/atc brake so your on 2 hitches not just the one. If I missed that in there my bad. Great system way to think outside of the box.

@The Full AJ I think the only disadvantage from that is you restrict your ability to rotate freely for different shooting angles.

Nice video. I just found your channel. Some of us east coasters are trying the jrb climbing method. John developed hitches to get rid of most of the need for any mechanical devices. Also definitely look into his saddle hunters hitch. It's pretty cool.

An ATC is a tubular belay device and a safeguard is a assisted belaying device that uses camming to help hold the rope. You can also get tubular assisted belay divices like the jul. There are many options from brand to brand but I think you may menafit from using one along side a third hand hitch

That's awesome. I just started with a saddle myself and as I was researching I saw many videos on madrocks and ATCs etc. I ended up going with a Mammut Smart 2.0. same concept. No moving parts. Nothing but friction. I also back it up with an auto block. You have a great channel brother!!!

I don’t know what I am seeing and probably saying, but I find the set up really interesting ! my two cent are that a single cord atc without guide mode will be wort the price. They are really inexpensive in the climbing gym sections, come to my mind the Decathlon one with a simple way to add friction if needed.

Great video. I’m still leaning toward getting the Madrock because I make fine adjustments while I’m hanging. Haven’t bought one yet though. I rappel with a Munter hitch now.

Thats why i do SRT the only transition is up and down. The tree has to fall for me to fall. My entire kit is less than 10 lbs.counting the scout platform.. Too many saddle hunters have too much crap because they are doing what they see. I'll make some videos soon . I used one 10mm static rope, rappel harness, madrock, left hand ascender, 2 carabiners, Scout platform stand. Simple, stealthy.. Just small pack, recurve, rope, carabiner and harness. Optimum run and.gun kit

Lots of ways to accomplish the same thing safely. I use a GriGri+ and am happy with the way it works. Very simple and safe device. I can attach/detach it from the rope easily, same as the Madrock. I could be wrong, but it looks like you leave your whole assembly on the rope all the time (except for the hollow block)? Which is fine, if that works for you. I have thought about other options, but I still keep coming back to the GG+. That "grinding" you hear in the Madrock may just be a bit of sand or dirt? A good cleaning should remove that and restore its smooth operation maybe.

Appreciate the video. I have a madrock but I actually like the figure 8 better for rappelling (backed up of course). The madrock is just too loud for me and I don't like adding tape and strips to it in fear of having a malfunction.

  • @mixedbreed8196
    @mixedbreed8196 ปีที่แล้ว

That's a good alternatives to the madrock just like the figure 8. I'm rolling with the madrock right now and like the ease of it. But have something that is not a mechanical is a viable option. Hopefully it works out for you. Stay safe brother and good hunting

I ran the other way to use an ATC that you mentioned and it was a lot. I ended up getting a GriGri and now the Madrock (but haven’t tried the Madrock yet). I might have to update my ATC to this method as my back up or new option.

@@PrivilegedBowhunter Update: So I got the Pilot ATC and the recommended Black Diamond Gridlock HMS carabiner. It is a no go for me. The Pilot ATC will not hold my weight. I think it is simply a function of my weight (225#) and rope choice. The rope I bought is Sterling CanyonTech which is 9.5mm. It has a Technora sheath and nylon core. The sheath is jus too slippery. I tried several other carabiners and none worked. The Pilot ATC did hold just fine on the 10.5mm nylon rope I built my tethers/lineman's belt out of though (Deep Woods by All Gear). After that failure I orders the Mammut Smart 2.0 kit. It works great just not with the carabiner it came with. I had to use the Black Diamond Gridlock, LOL. Anyway, I have been practicing every day and will feel confident in a couple weeks when our bow season opens. After all this mess, I wish I would have just got a regular ATC with guide mode. Hope, my comment helps someone.

I'm fairly new to saddle hunting but I do have a madrock. Was wondering during if that ATC setup has to be moved or taken apart or anything before and after the hunt. Like the madrock you gotta reset everytine for the next hunt. I may have missed it in here been back and forth getting rdy for work.

I generally remove it at the bottom of the tree before I pull the rope down. Once the rope is down it set back up for the next hunt

So I’m goin through same process now. JRB non jamming, Cornell hitch with pulley, double bridge and munter and repel ring etc. So when you are done repelling out and you go to remove your repel rope you are having to undo your system to pull rope down correct?

That seems over complicated and dangerous. Especially after a few days of sun up to sun down. Not sure why you didnt just buy another madrock if you had doubts about the one you have failing. That grit feeling could have just been dirt. Looks like your lines were caked in sandy dirt. Also, I think you could have just put a persik where you put the autoblock and kept using your madrock. If it failed you would have a secondary stop in place. Not knocking you or beating you up in the comments, just saying the KISS approach is not what your doing here.
