    Once again folks, I am not an instructor. Do not mimic what I'm doing. Climbing is inherently dangerous. If you decide to climb trees, or anything else, you are doing so at your own risk. Please seek professional advice!

    Hey man. Love your videos. But I will just say here incase anyone is watching in 2024. The 8mm absolute matters. The GriGri is not rated for anything under 8.5, but is optimal for 9-10mm. That will dramatically help your cam catch, limit noise and most of all be safe. You also need to have both of the devices you are using backed up. Neither one is made to be used free handed for static work. Backing up with a prusik/cornell above the belay device is a must. The GriGri + is an amazing device for saddle hunting if used properly. Keep kicking a**.

    I have both the Grigio+ and the Madrock Safeguard. Your review was spot on. I prefer the Grigio+ for the smoothness of lowering. I have to work more with the Safeguard to be smooth and there is more anxiety when using it that I will drop! Please lose the ice cream truck music in the background. You don’’t need it. You speak well and the music is a distraction! Hunt safely, my Friend!

    I saw you'd posted something new and had to check it out. I ran a rope over a tree limb in my back yard and climbed up and down the rope for the first time just a couple of days ago using prusiks. This was my first climbing experience, so I never went more than a few feet high, but it was a farking awesome experience. I am an old geezer and haven't climbed a tree in a gazillion years, so I plan to take things slowly and safely. The first thing I found was that hauling my butt up a rope was hard, but it was like being a kid again. I haven't worked that hard or had that much fun in ages. Being old and out of shape sucks. That is going to take some work, but I'll be back at it as soon as the weather allows. I'd like to be sitting in a tree this fall during our hunting seasons. I hope you will keep posting about things you learn along the way. I'll be watching for sure!

    I tried something else that you might enjoy. I used a rope and pulley system (Rock Exotica Aztek pulley kit) to hoist myself up a tree. It was soooo easy and it was quiet. Using such a system requires some common sense safety measures, but it is a great way to get a short distance (perhaps bow hunting height) without a lot of effort. I was able to easily raise and lower myself and will almost certainly keep this little kit handy. You might like it too. In addition to getting you up the tree, it will be helpful in dressing your game if you need to hoist it for cleaning or even dragging your game up a hill.

    • @jwlogan4006
      @jwlogan4006 ปีที่แล้ว

      my only concern would be getting it in the tree in the first place without making too much noise. how loud is this thing? looks like a lot of metal

    • @340wbymag
      @340wbymag ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jwlogan4006 It is actually pretty quiet, but with an Aztek kit (set of fours) you need lots of rope. I have hauled myself to about twenty feet with several different pulley configurations just to amuse myself, and found it is super-easy to do. I am an old man with some back problems, so hoisting myself is a safe alternative to climbing when my back is giving me problems.

    For the record, 8mm oplux is out of spec for the MadRock. Also, MadRock specifically state you should not use any kind of a block below the device. If you want to use something like an autoblock for more peace of mind, it should go above the Safeguard.
    Barring those points, which I only mention so that others are aware, your vids are great.

    I'm a rock climber and canyoneer myself and I've seen a lot videos recently from saddle hunters using several belay devices. I found that inherently dangerous for you all. Those products are specialized for belaying/lead climbing only. You should take a look at several other pieces of equipment such as Petzl Stop, Petzl I'D, Petzl Rig Pro. You could even use a Petzl Jumar, Croll or even a Pro Traxion. There are several other pieces of equipment specifically geared towards rope ascend and rope work that are way safer for you. Climb safely.

    • @PrivilegedBowhunter
      @PrivilegedBowhunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for providing some expertise. What about the functionality of these belay devices makes them unsafe for our purposes. I understand that they weren't built with our purpose in mind, but what do you invision failing in our rigs? Also, noise in the hunting woods is a major concern for us and the Madrock seems to be the most quiet. Can you speak to the amount of noise that the devices you recommended make?

    • @spencerhuffman3189
      @spencerhuffman3189 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PrivilegedBowhunter The devices described above would be overkill for this type of access IMO. Nothing wrong with the "Texas jugging" style of ascent used in your video. If folks wanted to save money, they could just buy some 6mm accessory cord (6 feet or so would do it) and learn to tie a prussic hitch or klemheist instead of a handled ascender and the foot tape. I use a Grigri and Jumar (handled ascender) for challenge course access and rope ascension in climbing rescues in the same fashion all the time and they work great!
      To make ascending even easier with this setup you can clip another carabiner through the jumar and then the brake strand through that. Redirecting the brake strand like that allows you pull down instead of up as you stand in the foot loop, and it gives a you 3:1 theoretical mechanical advantage!

    Okay, I have to comment on this because I use Grigris and have used them and this is just not realistic. This is NOT how it would be used in a real hunting situation and it's an unsafe use of the Grigri. It's NOT a hands-free device like he's showing here. It's supposed to be tied off and not have the tag end be free floating like this. If it is, once loaded, it applies a lot of pressure to the cam and upon unweighting, it slowly returns back to an open position as it has to push on the rope to open up. The other issue with this demonstration is his unrealistic movement. When you are hunting, you don't make subtle fast movements like that. If you do, the noise is irrelevant because a deer will see you from a mile away. The combination of these two things, not being tied off allowing the rope to float, quick fast movement up to release the tension in the line, and the fact that this looks to be the smallest diameter rope you are supposed to use in this device, and this noise is possible. In my setup, with a 9.8mm rope, I literally have to JUMP up in order to make a tiny, tiny faint audible sound. If I just make normal movements like coming up to the tree to release the tension, there are zero sounds whatsoever. This noise exists only in a hypothetical situation designed to create this noise. In a hunting situation where you're going to be using min a 9.8 mm rope, tying it off, and keeping your movements less subtle, there are absolutely zero noises that come from the Grigri. I have to literally try to make it make noise by jumping up. So is this a realistic representation? No it's not, because this is not how you're supposed to use the Grigri anyway, nor is this kind of motion the kind of motion one makes as a hunter. A saddle is meant to allow one to hunt stealthily. The other thing that we do to hunt stealthily is to keep our movements slow and minimal. If we are moving at will doing whatever without a care about how we go about moving, then we aren't in hunting mode and any noise made is irrelevant. Cheers!
