Boston Logan in a Bonanza - Real Time

  • Several viewers have asked if I can show some of my flights in full length. Here is an attempt to do that, for a short flight - Beverly, MA to Boston Logan International Airport, a distance of 14 nautical miles. You'll see all camera angles simultaneously, and I suggest a 4K display for best quality.
    I am very interested in hearing how you like this format, and if you'd like to see longer flights in full length. Please let me know in the comments section below.
    Thanks for watching, and if you like this video, please do subscribe.

    Just had a chance to view this flight, and I really like the full-flight format, and hope you will continue it with all of your flights. This is a real pilot's video...great composite views show us map position, the MFD, over-the-nose and wingtip views...no silly shots of the airplane's underbelly, thank you! At a time when other You Tube channels are going stale with buddy ride-along flights and meet-ups, you're out there trying to innovate! Keep up the good work!

    Nicely done. Imagine those taxi instructions on a drizzly night and the bright lights from the terminals on your spotted windows! Would've been a chore. I'd take the breezy day and the smell of jet exhaust any time!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, BOS seems like a very nice airport to fly into. The one downside for me was the landing and handling fees, which were very high even by Class Bravo airport standards. I've been to a lot of those, and BOS was so far the most expensive, by quite a margin.

    • @imapilotlol
      @imapilotlol 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Martin Pauly that’s unfortunate. I’m glad I do not have to pay them! Everything is considerably more expensive in boston. Don’t even get me started on rent 😣

    Hi Martin.....another very nice presentation, I look forward to your videos. I agree with many of the other previous commentators, - this format works well on your shorter flights, or longer flights that have been edited for brevity. I also agree that the view of the cockpit panel 6 pack instruments is much more informative, and thus could replace the transponder/Garmin 530 view in the upper right corner. Thanks for all the time and effort you make on these vidioes!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could try that. My worry is I would lose the cellular connection (video uplink) by going that high. I've tested it in the pattern; it works fine at 1,000 or even 1,500 AGL but gets spotty above that. So the ideal scenario is a flight where there's a lot to see on the ground, prior to take-off - which made Chicago Midway kind of ideal.

    As long as the flights are short like this one, the real time video is OK. I would think that longer flights with long periods of watching the scenery crawl by would not be desirable. You do a good job of editing allowing us to get an adequately complete picture and that edited version is more desirable. I like it when I can see at least the artificial horizon, air speed, vertical speed, and altimeter as a minimum. More when you have the cameras to do it.

    I echo some of the other comments. I prefer videos that are in the 30 min. range because I don't always have the block of time to watch longer. This edit was interesting with the multiple cameras, but I do agree that more of the instrument panel would be good. I know you are not providing instruction, but the speeds, climb/descent rates, altitudes, etc. are informational for some learning. I also found your planning videos to be helpful in putting context to your decisions and the process you use. Thanks for the time and effort in creating the videos.

    Another great video Martin. I like the format. Length is nice, I like to watch up to an hour. Instrument panel would be cool too. Love the position display on the charts, the view straight ahead, transponder/coms and the pilot camera.
    For future videos it would be great to have both formats, like many viewers already suggested.

    Fun ride-along. Thanks. Longer form videos are good, but if they contain long sequences with nothing happening and not ATC chatter then its OK to edit that out. Taxiing, takeoff, climb out, and ATC calls in cruise, then decent, approach, landing, and taxiing are all A-OK. Use your judgment. If you think a long sequence with nothing going on (and you are not talking to the audience) need to be edited then OK.

    4 tiles is a much better use of the screen real estate

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dmitri, just to check my understanding, you are saying using six tiles made it too crowded?
      You'd prefer just four?

    • @DmitriMogiliver
      @DmitriMogiliver 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Martin, in my opinion 4 tiles would be an ideal use of the real estate:
      1) Pilot
      2) Front looking camera
      3) Instrument panel (most used instrument(s)
      4) iPad
      Side view ... there is not much happening, that is why if I were you, I'd make the front pointed camera and instrument panel tiles wider because this is where the "action is"

    You may jave addressed this in another video, but what do you do for a living that allows you to fly so much and travel so broadly?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matt, I have a pretty "normal" office job in an aerospace company, though I don't fly for my job. My flying is all for fun and travel, e.g. for family vacation trips or quick weekend getaways. The videos on my channel have been accumulating over several years, it's not like I have a trip like this every month (sadly) - but when I think there's going to be something nice or special to see, I bring the cameras along on my flights.

    • @mattbasford6299
      @mattbasford6299 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Martin Pauly I have to travel periodically for work. Whenever it's feasible, I try to fly myself. I haven't flown to as many places as you, but I looked back at my logbook and have been into 130 different airports in 10 years (I went about a year and half without flying due to a medical siuation). I put up a big US map in my office with colored thumbtacks where I've flown myself.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt, you make me jealous. Use of small GA airplanes was not just allowed but encouraged in our company in the 1970s and 1980s, but then I guess we became a victim of corporate thinking and liability concerns, like so many organizations. So today it is strictly forbidden for our employees to fly themselves for work.
      I do have a map in my hangar, much like you describe, with a pin marking each airport I've taken the Bonanza. Still needs a lot more pins, especially in the western half of the country. :-)

    Nice job! A bit odd that you edited out the part where you picked up the ATIS...

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edited out... you are funny!
      I never got the ATIS on this flight. (I know, I said I would get it.) Short flight, busy approach control frequency, and really the flight was so short that the weather couldn't have changed that much from take-off to touch-down. Plus those automated ATIS systems they use at the very large airports tend to create very, very long messages. Right or wrong, I decided I didn't need the ATIS on this particular flight.

    • @bostonareapilot3911
      @bostonareapilot3911 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ATC gave you runway wind and altimeter - that's the important stuff anyway. When I depart a close in airport and land BOS, I'll listen to the ATIS just before I check in with approach.

      Good to know, Frank. Maybe a compromise could be to make two edits of such flights in the future, one cut to highlight the key activities, and another one for those that like to see things in real time.
