Duane Allman was one of the very finest guitar players of the Rock era. Absolutely in the same league as Clapton, Beck, Page and Hendrix. He was not the fastest or the flashiest, but he had, among other things, one amazing quality in his playing; although he never, ever played a song the exact same way twice, his playing was so incredibly soulful that every note he played sounds absolutely perfect for that song, at that moment. He was a giant of the electric guitar, and not even 25 when he left us...amazing.
@@midiland09 Peter Green was an amazing player as well, when he was younger especially. I have to admit I'm not nearly as familiar with his body of work as I am with those other guys..
This is a Fenton Robinson orginal. I haven't heard Boz Scaggs write anything this bluesy. Duane Allman remains one of the best and most soulful slide guitar players of all time. Amazing that he accomplished as much as he did all before he turned 25 years old. God bless and thank you for sharing.
Will never be an agreement on Greatest of all time guitar player: however EVERY discussion has to include Duane Allman and a strong argument can be made that he was the greatest.
It’s like a sound from a different dimension. The guitars voice is so distinctively unique. It has that essential element of being unbelievably beautiful while underneath a nasal ugly quality, just barely, is voiced with it. It makes it so mysterious and you can’t help but listen for more. The band hears and feels Duane’s energy and they simply can’t help but be pulled along for the ride, helping to unleash their own inner passion for music and giving it a voice to be expressed.
Duane's guitar does many things other players cannot or will not do. On this cut you can hear his guitar breathe with the horns and stay in rhythm with the drums and bass.
Duane is the best. I mean he was only 25 when he died! Imagine how much better he would have gotten with more age and life experience. A true natural. I understand everyone has their favorites but to me it's Duane. Srv is close though. They were taken from us too soon...
Daniel Yount yes 25 is certainly a tender age and sure makes one wonder what untapped musically the future would have held. Also he picked up the instrument relatively late, I mean it wasn’t like he’d been playing since 5 yrs old. In fact I’ve tried to research just how many years it took him to be at the point he was at skill wise, but with little success. Just a absolutely phenomenal musician. R.I.P.
This solo still makes me sit on the edge of a chair and listen to EVERY note Duane hits. I remember him saying once that guitar solos are saxophone solos translated. We can all argue who is best/better, but it all boils down to Duane pouring his soul into his solos. I saw Boz do Loan Me A Dime in the 80's, after the audience peppered him and the stage with dimes! He had Les Dudek playing, Les Was also the opening act. If I wasn't watching, I would swear it was Duane!
What are you talking about robotic, Greg Allman said in his book that when Derek is playing its the only time he ever looked over and swear that Duane is still alive. He said that Derek even makes the expressions and gestures while hes playing like his brother. So I think Greg would know alot more than we would.
absolutely one of the best solo's ever, can't imagine how much better Duane would have gotten had he been able to stick around longer, keep your eyes open for bikes on the road and give 'em plenty of room!
So great to see that folks are still discovering and being inspired by him! No better tribute! The guitar he used to record Layla is in Macon GA @ The Big House Museum. Folks go by there and kneel in overwhelmed awesomeness....
The Late Great Natural Virtuoso Duane Allman---- The Best-- Ever.... Period ....Musical Passion from the Heart and Soul, that`s what we hear when He plays. The Allman Brothers Band never did just `Play` Southern Rock--They Lived it. I`ve been a Fan for over 40 years and never get tired of playing their Albums. They made other Bands, at the time, seem to be Sugar-Coated and Contrived. The ABB were the Original `Southern Rock Band` and were, without doubt, the Musical `Yard Stick` that other Bands tried their best to measure up to. Let`s not forget it was Duane who played the solo on `Layla` when he was in Derek and The Dominoes and taught Eric Clapton how to play a `Blues/Rock Guitar`. If only `Moon-Dog` Duane hadn`t been so reckless on his M/C and leaving us so young, we would have far more Music to remember him by, and he would have had the life he deserved, due to the enjoyment he gave to so many others. As his Bro. Gregg once said of him, "When riding his Motor-cycle, he had two speeds, ---Parked, and a 100". Characters like Duane Allman and all the other leading Musicians who died too early in their lives, make the Rock n Roll Myth what it is .... Legendary.
Well, I don`t think `wtf?` was necessary. Uh,Uh, sorry to disillusion you, Pal. I saw the young Eric you are referring to , he helped back John lee Hooker , when in the John Mayall Bluesbreakers Band in 1965 at the Riki-Tik Club in Guildford.. His playing was still average as a Blues player, and not anywhere near what he eventually became due to being helped along the way. John Mayall completely out-shone Eric on the night. Duane Allman was his Blues Guitar `Tutor`,--- period.... All the Blues Fraternity over here think the same. The accepted saying in the UK, for the last 40 years, is. "Duane Allman showed Eric Clapton how to `Properly` play a Blues Guitar, and Freddie King showed him how to make it speak". That`s why Eric invited Duane to be in `Derek and The Dominoes`--- to learn from him. Eric was not an innovator at the time and Duane was. In Musical Circles he was known as `5-Chord Eric` at the time. Eric evolved into what he is today by his musical association with Duane Allman and he would be the first to admit it. One has to see through the `Myths of Time`. Kind Regards... Paul.Revell
Hi Bro. Thanks for the reasonable and friendly reply. Don`t get me wrong. I love Eric Clapton. ha ha. His life has had some hard testing times, some visited upon him and others self-induced, and it gradually made him Authentic as a `Blues` Player. Pete Elborough, an old friend who lives 4 doors away, helped build Eric`s Recording/Practice Studio onto the side of his House on Pitch Hill, Ewhurst, Surrey, 40 years ago. Shortly after that, at the time of The Queens Silver Jubilee, in June 1977, a few of us were literally `Tripping out` for the day nearby to his home on Pitch Hill and in the evening, all of a sudden, this electric guitar started playing live, quite near to us. As it sang out across the Countryside for half an hour we knew it was Eric Clapton having a blast for his own enjoyment`s sake. I turned to my fellow spaced-out friends and said--"This sort of thing can only happen when you`re on Acid". and we all laughed. ha ha. Our private Concert, Thanks for that, Eric.! Long may he keep playing; and Long may you go on enjoying Music and all aspects of your Life. Play it Cool and Keep Smiling through. Happy Trails, and Adios Amigo--- Paul
If you dislike this, you dislike Duane Allman, if dislike Duane Allman, you dislike music, if you dislike music, you dislike life, if you dislike life, you dislike the universe.
the fender bassman amp behind him at the beginning, where he is in the kitchen; my friend , Mike New bought it from Allman's mother in 1974. He answered an ad for amp for sale, the price was right so he bought it. He was very proud to own an amp that belonged to Duane. He left Daytona and went to New Orleans to pursue music as a career, but was murdered over drugs there 2 years later or so. I assume the amp went there with him, and is still there, or in a landfill.

@chukk98 it damn sure says fenton robinson wrote it on the new copies. i live in dallas and saw boz lots back in the day but that always pissed me off. i thought i was the only one who knew...

Just love the treasure trove of music, live and recorded of this amazing guitarist and artist. I was fortunate to see him several times live, and would give my right arm to have the opportunity again. My mouth would drop and not open for the 3-4 hours they played.
