This seems to be around the time that possibly people would notice the onset of little flashes of abnormality in him..maybe just a second or two, and I regard his stealing the piano coda from Rita Coolidge to get his name on credit seems odd in itself. An unspecified rift between he and Clapton was taking shape at that point as well. I was wondering if you had any memories of Jim lashing out or acting strange in any way. Just anything that might had caught your attention.
Just one thing to say -- this is top guitar work from 70, two of the best guitarists find each other. No competition between them, just getting the best out of each other and making wonderful guitar-rock. Almost everyone knows what we lost in Hendrix, but just a few have got with them that the loss of Duane Allman was in the same class.
The slide guitar is so sad and beautiful at the same time. There are so many moments in it so evocative that words cannot describe, It almost wells me up. That's the power of music, a few notes can move you in a way a thousand words cannot.
Duane Allman was the greatest guitar player that the music industry has ever seen or heard. When it comes to Hendrix, Vaughn, Santana and Clapton Duane passed them all. These great musicians played almost all of their lives even regrettably some didn't live long lives. But they played for more than 10 years. Duane only was playing his AX for almost 7 years and slide for 3. Imagine if he had taken up the guitar at the same age as all these phenomenal musicians did. Then you would have to agree that he was the most gifted guitarist in the history of music, whether it was rock, southern white blues, country or however the industry wants to classify Allman's kind of music. Thank you Duane Allman for the joy you brought to millions in just the too short time that you were here.

The first time I heard this song I was a young boy. I remember listening and saying to myself those guitars sound like two cats singing to each other what a lovely sound. Now as and old man I still hear those two cats and what a lovelier sound it has become. Thank you.

I know very little about music. I heard Layla with Duane and was utterly amazed. Like many people I stupidly thought it was mostly Clapton. Then I heard Layla without Duane. I realized there was another guitar genius on the original track. I looked it up and there was Duane Allman, the tragic creator of Southern Rock whose brief life inspired Freebird. Bell Bottom Blues is amazing Clapton. But Little Wing is all Duane and Why Does Love Have to Be So Sad Again Is Duane Scorching His Way Thru. Everyone knows the deal. Skydog and Hendrix would have been a treat. Skydog was one of the few in Jimmy's stratosphere.

Well he was listed as the 2nd greatest guitarist behind Hendrix in Rolling Stones famous top 100 guitar players issued way back when, which would have him ahead of all his contemporaries (including Clapton, Beck, Santana, etc) except Jimmy.
Anyone ever tried to do a 7 minute slide solo? I don't think so! To call Duane the greatest slide guitarist is a sin. He was flat out the greatest ever. Lucky for me, I saw all of the top ten live and none of them could hold Duane's pick.

I think of Little Wing and Why Does Love Have to be So Sad on this album and how Duane Allman just grabbed this band by the balls in those songs (and Layla) and launched into such a powerful tour de force. It is sad that Allman and Hendrix never got to play together. And back on Layla, as we all know, the MTV unplugged version was what Clapton always envisioned for this song - but in session, Duane came up withe riffs and the uptempo - and a legendary song and album was made. And when Clapton asked Duane to join the Dominoes, Duane said, sorry I got my own band, and Fillmore East followed.
A muscician who can express their emotions through their music, make you feel what they feel, is truly a gift from God, and Duane was the best. I literally cry when i hear this outro.
I still play the "Dreams" cut from that famous night at the Fillmore at least once a week. Was 18 in '71 when I first heard it, and I still get misty EVERY time I hear it today !!!

So at the end Duane takes his slide and touches the strings above the fret bar and makes the bird sounds. He did this in some other songs as well notably mountain jam. He developed this technique has a tribute to Charlie “bird” Parker the sax player whom he loved to listen to!!

Yes Layla while written by Eric was totally recreated and changed with the up-tempo riff by Duane as well as the long slide at the end - but if that wasn't commanding enough - Why Does Love have To Be So Sad to me is the song on the album where Duane goes into beast attack mode and really dominates the whole song and burns Eric a new a-hole. And I know its not a competition and they are just musicians digging each other - - that is simply for the Eric is God crowd.

2019 The 1957 gold top Gibson Les Paul Duane Allman used to record the iconic guitar solo in "Layla" has sold at auction for $1.25 million. The guitar was Allman's primary instrument during live shows with the Allman Brothers Band and on the band's first two studio albums. It was later used to craft and record one of the most well-known solos in rock history on the Derek and the Dominos 1970 hit song. During the "Layla" session, Duane apparently grew fond of Eric Clapton's cherry sunburst Les Paul. When he had an opportunity to trade his gold top for another guitarist's cherry sunburst LP later that year, Duane also threw in $200 and a Marshall 50 amplifier head to sweeten the deal. Duane's guitar had three other owners before being acquired in 1977 by the person who sold it at auction this week. It is the counter melody of Duane's slide guitar that stands out vs the melody of the piano that make this recording so great.

I still play the "Dreams" cut from that famous night at the Fillmore at least once a week. Was 18 in '71 when I first heard it, and I still get misty EVERY time I hear it today !!!

So at the end Duane takes his slide and touches the strings above the fret bar and makes the bird sounds. He did this in some other songs as well notably mountain jam. He developed this technique has a tribute to Charlie “bird” Parker the sax player whom he loved to listen to!!
Clapton created an incredible song, but Duane Allman’s guitar absolutely sings, creating an iconic sound for the ages. The combination of piano and Allman’s guitar is unforgettable.

A fabulous love song by Eric Clapton. I don't know anything about how the music was put together, but the combination of Eric's love and all the other musical contributions make this song one of the best. It moves me to this very day.

I was at the Great Fillmore WEST in 71 !...I saw some of the world's Best Acts.....a cloud of " smoke "..there was ,as the whole place sat on the floor passing ...shall I say..."Left handed cigarettes"...LOL ..for all who missed the Fillmore's..they missed the Best places in the World to hear the Worlds greatest Rock bands. I was very fortunate to have lived during that time....oh..did I forget to mention that little Gig in Upstate NY..." WOODSTOCK "...of course we were all there...I was a Senior at Ill. State Univ. at the time of that great Rock of the Ages Concert ! Books hv bn written abt. Woodstock...and it was all true and more !..Never will happen agn. in this present sanitized World of of Political correctness !...Peace to all of you from one who witnessed Rock from its very beginning. Gonna be a fantastic concert in Central City Park. I'm gonna be there and rocking my lil heart out along with thousands that come every year to our fair city to remember, mourn, & to celebrate the music that's been and continues to be the fabric of our lives and continues to bond both young and us old hippies alike together. Yes Layla while written by Eric was totally recreated and changed with the up-tempo riff by Duane as well as the long slide at the end - but if that wasn't commanding enough - Why Does Love have To Be So Sad to me is the song on the album where Duane goes into beast attack mode and really dominates the whole song and burns Eric a new a-hole. And I know its not a competition and they are just musicians digging each other - - that is simply for the Eric is God crowd.

And if your ear can't hear Duane's over-arching licks - those long wails in the that will rip your heart out - then turn your speakers off and go to bed. All you need to do is listen to some ABB and you'll know the truth. I recommend the Duane Allman Anthology Parts 1 & 2 .

2019 The 1957 gold top Gibson Les Paul Duane Allman used to record the iconic guitar solo in "Layla" has sold at auction for $1.25 million.
The guitar was Allman's primary instrument during live shows with the Allman Brothers Band and on the band's first two studio albums. It was later used to craft and record one of the most well-known solos in rock history on the Derek and the Dominos 1970 hit song.
During the "Layla" session, Duane apparently grew fond of Eric Clapton's cherry sunburst Les Paul. When he had an opportunity to trade his gold top for another guitarist's cherry sunburst LP later that year, Duane also threw in $200 and a Marshall 50 amplifier head to sweeten the deal.
Duane's guitar had three other owners before being acquired in 1977 by the person who sold it at auction this week.
It had been on display at the Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House in Macon, Georgia, before being sold.
