Duane is the GOAT in my opinion. There are many great guitar players but to me he is the only one who could sit in with literally anyone. He always plays the right notes at the right time.

It's not what you play, it's how you play it. Duane is one of my favs (I always go between Dave Gilmour and he after Hendrix) because he just smashes every note. From bends to slides to vibrato, everything moves and it moves you. Everyone should play and sing just like this. :) Be the wizard that makes the whole crowd feel it and you'll be adored.

I was in the second row, center. My friend from the Army was the stage manager of the Fillmore East. After the show I was taken back stage and introduced to the band and later went on to play the blues harp with the Duane Allman band when they were in Florida. I still play with the lead guitarist, Dan Toler, from time to time. Such a shame Duane and Berry Oakley were lost so young.

I love 71 dead. For me, this was their best year--raw, vocals were getting dialed in, straight ahead rock and roll with just the right amount of blues and country. Best damn bar band in the universe from 1970 to 1972.

@SuperFirewire1 Are you kidding? Jerry and Duane are trading licks without stepping on each other all the way through this magnificent piece. You can tell the difference -- all of their different vocabularies are in there. Listen to the different ways they slide up to the notes -- Duane's slide work is unmistakeable and inimitable. That is Bob Weir on the rhythm. And some sweet harp by Pigpen. This is a real treasure -- thanks so much for posting it.

The Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers were/are band with the genius of being able to construct melody. Few bands today, or for that matter, few in history have been able to do that consistently, especially live. The Band was also such a group and, if not for various mood-enhancers unique to each band, one of the greatest concerts on American soil should have been at Watkins Glen (reported 600,000 in attendance) in the summer of "73.

What an era to have fun. (just look at any BGP Fillmore posters you can see that) I saw my 1st GD show in 1985 but the fun had been clearly on for quite a long while before then. 10 blessed years I got off at the bus stop in 1995, payed respects at FareTheeWell and now for the last 3 years for me a spark is lit again and try to see D&Co. wherever I can. All I have to say is thank fucking god not everyone gets the magic.... I personally never try to convince anyone that the Dead hold the good stuff. It's enough that I know they do. I will expose fun, kind people to shows but rarely uppity musicians And I've played drums 43 years now so I know a couple. Some people don't understand that 1 note from Jerry (1 forgotten Weir lyric even, etc...) to my family and to afflicted Deadheads carries tons more power than 1000 notes perfectly placed just so from (insert guitar god here). Is Mayer dumbing down? I don't think so. I think we can all agree he's paying homage to someone he respects and humbly filling big ass shoes. The songs will live on, my hope is the pixie dust does too. Is this the best Hurts me Too? doesn't matter if it's mine but I'm glad to know it's some folks. Duane better than Jerry? What kind of stupid comment is that? So stupid I wasted 10 minutes of my life ranting so I guess I'm the stupid

Very beautiful! I think this has to be the closing of the Fillmore East Week.... The Dead had a 5 night run this might have been night 2 maybe a Tuesday night.. I believe that Duane stayed on stage for only one more tune.... 'Sugar Magnolia'. I went into the city on my own that night and got the once in a life time ..... , me looking for a spare ticket and some dude says here... 'Is it a good seat I ask?' ..... .... Front row. ... (Night 5 was pretty goodToo!)

Don't know what Pigpen had, but it was stellar... Nothing spectacular about his voice, but is spellbinding along with Duane's guitar, and Garcia having the genius to know what was happening and just letting it flow naturally!! This is truly amazing music history... (side note) if you can find it somewhere listen to John Lee Hooker talking about Pigpen... Funny stuff, true but funny... You can hear the love and respect in his voice... In my opinion if you had John Lee Hooker's respect, you pretty much had all you needed (musically)...

I hear ya. Complaining about the recording quality is really weird. I guess if some people got to hear the Sermon on the Mount, they'd complain about the quality of the catered lunch.

Duane- a legend. Lucky enough to have seen Greg Allman as a warmup to BB King, then they played together at Westbury Music Fair in New York years ago.

Yes Ron McK does a fine job on this-of course Duane really adds some sweet slide icing on this bluesy cake. First time I've heard this version, and I grew up on the GD. Much different than the post-Pigpen version on Europe '72 where Garcia sang lead. Garcia really lays back until his solo, even letting Weir predominate on the chordal backup (and he does a pretty good job too, if just a bit too forward in the mix. Nice recording job by the Dead crew- the Bear, Stanley Owsley (the Acid King of San Francisco) kept their sound on the cutting edge.

@@pckpat What do you mean? Pigpen was on the '72 European tour. He's got two cuts on the album, Mr. Charlie and Hurts Me Too.

In my opinion I believe Duane was the GOAT. Back then, he was the most sure-footed guitarist around. All the great musicians wanted Duane to play on their LP he was greatly sought after. I also believe that he was the greatest electric slide player ever. His knock em Dead slide work on "done somebody wrong" , don't keep me wonderin' and Dunkin' hearted boy can never be duplicated and was the greatest slide playing of all time.
