    Thank you for you nice information about this kind of settings. I have know for a couple weeks a Nikon Z9 and I am learning a lot from this kind of videos. Regards from Marco

    This is essentially the same AF setup I use on my A1 and it works well. But on the Z9 I prefer to use AF-C + BBF. Shooting BIF requires keeping the AF-ON button pressed for the camera to autofocus (functions the same as AF-F) but as soon as the AF-ON button is released the camera stops autofocusing. This prevents autofocus "hunting" which unfortunately is common when shooting birds in natural, visually busy environments and low light. This method provides much finer control of the cameras AF system and was needed because switching the Z9 between AF and MF modes is extremely cumbersome, unlike the A1. Cheers!

    Thanks for that Peanut! I like your videos. When I get the Z9 it must be able to acquire and track loons that take to flight. That is what I shoot with my D850. But my Z9 must be able to do it in video. Today, I learned from you that the i button is a very quick way to choose or change an autofocusing mode. Thank you.

    Thank you and thank you again. Your tutorials surpass any I've seen yet. I just purchased the Z9 and plan to use your settings & suggestions. Other than Florida, I think I recognize the area/s you are shooting in so perhaps we live in the same location. However a pipe dream, watching your videos made me wonder if ever you go out with or give one on one lessons to fellow Z9 folks. If so, I for one would jump at the oppurtunity :-) I love your videos and hope you keep doing these.

      Hi Donna, wow, thank you. This was a great comment to wake up to. Yes, I think we do live close by. I have not been giving formal one on one's because in this area you cant guarantee wildlife as you know. But, I love to help out. So, send me an email and we could arrange something. peanutchu@yahoo.com. Thanks

    Hey Peanut, another great video on your settings. I'm using a Z6ll and will try out your settings and see how they go for me. I like the custom box though I'm sure the Z6ll doesn't have it. Another reason to move up to the Z9! Lol
    I'm already looking forward to the next video. Greg

    Great video and great information. I use similar approaches. Sometimes when birds are flying closer or I’m in a hide with ducks cruising by, I tend to use the full screen, 3D tracking for video with AF-F. Your point on shooting the most steady, fluid and centered video of the animal IN CAMERA is spot on! That is where using a focus point or box as you suggest really shines to force you to better keep the critter in the center of the frame while it moves. It also helps when there are multiple subjects as you know. Sometimes it’s tough though because I’ll be on a duck, and he may head to the edge of the frame, while another duck is further back more in the center of the frame. Then you’re forced to move the focus box (which I don’t do during video), or pan over to keep the subject you want in focus, which can degrade to overall frame of both ducks. That’s where 3D has helped me. Nothing works all the time though as I’m sure you know!

    • @PeanutChuAdventures
      @PeanutChuAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kip, great hearing from you. You are 100% right. Each method has its strengths. Yes, if your subject is not in the center, without moving the box, that would be tough. Thanks and talk soon.

      Hi George, first, thanks for watching.
      I use Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base.
      For me, I put my left hand on the base of the gimbal to control panning stability.
      I use the previous version of Really Right Stuff TVC-34L Versa Series 3 Mk2 Carbon Tripod.

    Help Peanut. Great content!! Question. What's the difference between your custom single point box and 3D tracking mode? Any advantage?

    • @PeanutChuAdventures
      @PeanutChuAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Zachary, thank you. the custom box does not move, it stays where you put it. Its good for birds that are not moving much, but it tracks the eye and keeps it in focus, good when you are close to the subject. Also, it's like a single point, so you have precision of a single point.
      I don't use 3D, but 3D should follow the subject. Since I don't use 3D, I really am not sure of the advantages. Thanks of tuning in.

    thank you. which lens you like FX 800mm f/5.6 or the Z 800mm f/6.3? is there AF difference between the 2?

    • @PeanutChuAdventures
      @PeanutChuAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ramachandra,
      The z800mm 6.3 is excellent.
      1) AF is great. When large birds fly directly at you, it seems to stick better than the 800 5.6, otherwise the AF would be equal. I like capturing when they at fly at me, so I am enjoying he 800PF a little more with the AF
      2) The sharpness is also excellent, but to me, the 800 5.6 sharpness goes to the next level. With video, its very hard to tell the difference.
      3) The 800 5.6 renders a slightly smoother background.
      4) The lightness is a huge plus.
      Ok, to save 10k usd, the 800 6.3 is great choice.
      Thank you
