I’d love to use an iPad Mini as my daily driver but the fact it doesn’t have a dedicated app for WhatsApp is a dealbreaker for me. For those of us who live outside the US/Canada, WhatsApp is the main messaging/calling app and the fact I can’t use it on the iPad without an iPhone is redundant.
I think you may be able to use WhatsApp in browser
@@dummyemail4738 you definitely can but you need an iPhone to link the iPad to the web browser in order to use it. Which defeats the whole purpose.
@@ordinaryalan I think the latest update to WhatsApp removes that requirement as now the phone doesn't have to be close (at least certainly on the desktop but not sure in browser)
There is an app called WhatsPad chat that you can use for WhatsApp, I use in my iPad Pro 12.9 2018 and works perfect 👍🏻

As a volunteer tech who works with seniors, they are a population who are challenged with new technology. Many own the mini iPad which are seldom used, and this seems to be a great way to utilize them. Thanks for the intuitive video.

After hours of research I had the epiphany that if you buy a cellular Apple Watch you can use the family integration to configure it without an additional iPhone.
PS:I love the idea and would appreciate an alternative for non-US citizens to Google Voice / Skype

My mom still uses a landline with no cellphone and I’m thinking about making her switch. I think this will be a perfect thing.
Well I was interested in it (or any cellular iPad) partly as a device backup device for in case I have problems with my phone, so I never get stuck without a way of contacting people. This makes it seem even more reasonable an idea than I thought. I already call and text my son on his iPad mini when he has wifi, so I knew it could at least work with Apple devices. This google app seems like it gives us the same ability with other devices. Pretty cool!
I have been doing this for a year already and it’s great are use the mini for basically everything it’s an LTE version and it goes with me wherever I go. I prefer it mostly because I don’t talk on the phone that much and it has a bigger screen, which is helpful since I use it also for my car stereo, I do however use Skype instead of Google voice I added a number for six bucks a month and it’s been a great experiment so far the T-Mobile network is very good here so I have not had any issues with calls using the Skype number

Android has been doing tablet phones for over a decade. i love tablet phones, i prefer Android over iOS but I need iphone for only one purpose, once they adopt more android functions, then i could completely switch but for now, i am looking for a great ipad, and if this one actually takes a sim card, then it will definitely be worth checking out.

I just ordered the iPad mini 6 on Verizon. I’ve had Wi-Fi ipad minis for years, and I finally just ditched my phone for this cellular ipad.

So wired phones or buds keep your iPad tethered near yo your person while you can just answer a phone call by pushing one button
not even having to have the stupid Bluetooth on thet is randomly disconnecting left or right channels every now and again

How can you receive One Time Passcodes using the ipad mini?
I’m planning on getting a cellular iPad mini and pair it to my vehicle over Bluetooth just like my iPhone. Then have it mounted and use it the same way. My truck doesn’t have CarPlay so it should work.

I’m failed to complete the task, in app store google voice is not available for downloading and in google browser/Safari web saying it’s not available in your country 🇦🇪, is there any other option.?
The good news that I was able to get & open whatsapps in my new iPad mini 6 by request desktop and do link.
The craziest thing is this is so practical, idk if it's just me but I have my tablet everywhere and with it being the iPad pro on att I just don't even use a phone always answer and just have my air pods in so it's like having a phone in my pocket but I don't. This allows me to just work and not need a physical phone while the iPad does everything I work with much easier just cause of scale. The phone for me has become very very useless at this point. Especially because I do most of my socializing either in messenger or discord or maybe on Reddit. All easier on ipad 😂 especially answering calls on my air pods while I continue to see my screen. Idk why more people still need phones 🤷🏻♂️
Having ipad mini here. I dont think it can be use as phone substitution. But it can be used as complimenter, meaning you dont need gigantic screen on your phone anymore since you watch video and do browsing on ipad while go mobile like listening music and jogging using iphone. Eventhought it called “mini” it still too big to carry around.
Just ordered one! Main issues for me are (besides a few others): no Face ID, no Apple Pay, no OLED display, shorter battery life. Despite all that, if fits well in my pocket, will keep it!

I tried google voice but it doesn't work for the country I live (Spain), and in the comments of the App Store I see it doesn't work in the Netherlands.

Android guy here to chime in. I wanted to see if this is possible with the iPad mini because of course this has already been implemented in Android for many years. There aren't any limitations with android except the device's hardware. I currently use an 8.7 Samsung tablet for all of these things and we aren't limited. I use my actual phone number in the tablet sim tray as I would with any phone. It's just a bigger display phone. However, the device isn't up to today's standards of performance but is passable. I was willing to switch to the iPad mini due to its superior performance, but I see Apple is still flexing the ball and chain around making it fully functional. The biggest qualm I have is that you don't get text messages from your actual number from those who don't have iMessage? Is this true? I'm not interested in doing a workaround. I just want to insert my SIM card and have it function like a large phone.
Also the fact that the calls go directly to speaker is a sigh, unlike with my Samsung device which gives you a regular handset option. Sorry to sound like Phoebe from the magic school bus lol. I'm a fan of both, but the software is holding the iPad mini behind in some areas. It's a powerful device that can't be used to its full potential without workarounds.
It would be nice to see Apple make some updates to allow for more iPhone like functionality, but their philosophy has always been to control the user experience the way they want it to be

You can try searching the App Store for some calling/texting apps in your country
If I was a sole iPhone user - the mini would def become my "new phone" - and have a mini 13 or 12 nearby for moments I wanted to hole the phone natively - or an even older device just to pair the device and keep that iPhone stationary and solely use my iPad Mini
Honestly in that scenario, you'd be better off having a Pixel 4a with the iPad mini because they use the same charger and it would cost A LOT less.

Thank you for this. . I am battling to find reason to believe iPadOS is better than Android. I am coming off Android and new to iOS. WhatsApp, SimCard calls, External screen are standard on Android since forever. Therefore I am one of the crowd to push the iOS boundaries as I look for the kit which I expected

Third party ones would probably work. Just probably not the cellular options though. You would have to check with the carriers to see if they are able to do that in their system (referring to linking number to tablet)

@Technolotea Google voice are not support in my country :( so I was not able to check it.. But I try other solution. Applewatch SE cellular (with wireless headset) + iPad 6 mini. In this chain I eliminated iPhone. I was able to make and revice call phone. But with SMS problem was show up. Becouse SMS from phone to phone was ok. But message from institution "Bank, DPD, UPS etc.." was not recived.. until I turn on back iPhone. Finnaly I think better choise is buy iPhone Pro MAX or other Phone than try my way.. I was wasting my money and still addicted to the iPhone .. shame; P.
can you get a sim card for the ipad cellular or swap the iphone sim to the ipad, i have AT&T. without using the google apps
I’m not sure if the carriers have something to block that from working perfectly fine, but I believe the iPadOS will limit the capabilities too. For example, there is no phone app and you probably won’t be able to send text messages either, meaning you would eliminate the ability to contact your non-iPhone friends and family

I use my iPad for phone calls all the time i just tether it to my iPhone and keep my iPhone nearby. It seems like the easiest way to do it and i don’t need a data plan for my ipad either.

question in the grocery store you received a call from your iPhone that wasn’t a FaceTime call how did you do that because on iPhone it only allows calls from iPhone nearby Is there a way to use your Apple ID to receive calls when ur iPhone is at home connected to WiFi and I’m out and about with iPad on cellular will it still work ?
There might be a way to set that up via call forwarding to a Google Voice number. Otherwise, your phone would have to be nearby

@@KR-xn8xr When I was doing this test, I didn’t fully use it as my phone since I didn’t have the cellular iPad. I had someone call my Google voice number to test it out while I was out at the grocery store. I believe call forwarding is free and you would set that up on your phone in settings. I would double check with your carrier about charges, but I believe it’s free

That I wouldn’t be too sure about. Most VOIP services do have a FAQ section that might have the answers, or at least, customer service

Actually i have seen ppl use Samsung Galaxy Tab 'A' Series as phones many years ago already.. but they use Bluetooth Earpiece so they dun look silly holding a 8" tablet on their ears.

The iPad is restricted and doesn’t have access to a phone app. That’s why in this video I used Google Voice. If it were different I would’ve bought a cellular iPad mini to show it off. Unfortunately it is something that Apple restricts in its software

A pattern forms here from the repeated obstructions : APPLE is unnecessarily locking its users out of features because THEY have decided how THEY want YOU to use YOUR mobile device. Notice that all of the work-arounds come from non-Apple sources

You would only need a sim if you wouldn’t have a hotspot or Wi-Fi access. If you port your number into them, it doesn’t require a sim though. The sim would purely be for a data plan

I don’t think it will let you forward your calls and texts the same way it would when you have an iPhone

Eh. I wouldn’t just because I’m sure the iPad mini 7 will be a lot better. Or even the other iPads coming out in 2022. The screen refresh rate was definitely a killer for me, especially with an iPhone 13 pro.

I’m not sure of tablets, but you would be looking at possibly the z fold series if you can get a good carrier deal or a good used deal. Or also something like the LG phones with the dual screen case

It still would have some challenges. There is no perfect solution for using the iPad mini as a phone until Apple opens up support for it

This is sad that Apple users have to work around for such simple function. I have been using my Asus Zenpad 8.0 and Samsung Tab A 7.0 and 8.0 as tablet phones for years. They simply have phones function, period. Apple wants you to buy 2 devices if you want a phone and a tablet, not letting you owning a tablet phone.
It’s the price you pay for Apple products. I have seen those Android offerings over the years. Just wish it was possible with the iPad minis!

They do innovate, but they do have a focus for profits. At the end of the day, it’s just business. There’s a reason why they are worth as much as they are. At the end of the day, they do provide a quality experience, just not what certain people want them to be

I just find Apple sanicle in the extreme selling units that have a sim card but you cannot use as a phone Eg any iPad. I will never purchase on of their products again.
