    When connecting an external monitor without sound you can drag the control center and that media app top right corner has an antenna logo (triangle with circles) that allow you to elect where the sound goes

    You can switch back to iPad speakers from control centre. I have done this while my iPad mini is connected to monitor.

    Great explanation! I’ve got an iPad Air and want to have a desktop for basic spread sheets, writing, and social media. I can do all that in just the iPad but it would be so nice to have a desktop. Now I know I can. Thanks!

    Without proper scaling and secondary display support, it's still not worth it.
    Despite iPads being better tablets in pretty much every way, Samsung Dex makes their tablets (and phones) just so much better for a desktop experience.

    • @ghost-user559
      @ghost-user559 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s totally worth it depending on your use case. I literally hooked up my iPhone to an external display, speakers and a mouse and keyboard, and I could do anything you could do on a chrome book?
      Obviously it’s just a different interface than a desktop, and so it has totally different use cases. Content consumption, basic office work like spreadsheets or typing, Google cloud or Dropbox for storage and it’s a computer.
      Add basic photo editing and iMovie and you could run a TH-cam channel off of one. So it is what it is. Only thing it really lacks is ports.

    • @alexwr
      @alexwr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ghost-user559 I'd agree with you if you already had the iPhone and peripherals, however if it were a choice between that and a decent laptop/tablet, I'd go with the latter option every time!
      It also makes more sense if you're running with an iPhone with a 16/9 screen, because you won't get the ridiculous black bars due to Apple refusing to add a basic feature like proper external screen integration.
      I agree that you can just about do everything, however a phone screen blown up to 24-27 inches is not particularly suitable for word processing, and the port issue is less of an issue than it used to be, but it'd be nice to have. To solve that issue, you'd still need a dock, preferably one with passthrough charging. At that point you might be spending just as much money, if not more for a definitively worse user experience. Just for bragging rights of saying that your phone is your main computer.
      Some day, I think phones will make the desktop irrelevant, but it's going to take a lot better desktop level apps, a much better user interface and a lot less hassle before people start to use it in that way. It works for some, like yourself, but for most, it simply isn't particularly practical.

    Been trying this out. One thing that drives me crazy is when a text box isn’t activated to type into by default. For example, when you open App Launcher, it’s the sole text box on the screen but you need to click on it to be able to type.
    Really hope Apple improves the window management and such by default. It’s crazy how TH-cam charges you for a PIP View.

    Imagine what it would be like if or when they put USB-C on iPhones. A computer in your pocket! For everyday stuff like web browsing, TH-cam, this is great. Whether this could replace your computer would depend on what you apps you're running. MS Office, Turbo Tax? Love the idea however.

  • @WaltKurtz68

    Thanks for this. Now I know what it apparently CAN'T do. First of all the Ipad's screen should display in the external screen's native resolution and screen ratio (16:9 for most desktop monitors and tvs and at least in 1920x1080). Second of all it should offer the option to turn off the built in display to save battery AND be able to connect a USB keyboard and mouse through a docking station's USB ports so BlueTooth can stay OFF (again to prolong battery life) Also it would be nice if Ipads in general could make use of RJ45 ethernet through a docking station again to save battery (WiFi off).

    I have been trying to find a similar analysis for doing this on the iPad 9, which has lightning. Most HUBs these days are USB-c, which would be remedied with a lightning adaptor, but I wonder if the transfer rate would be too different to make that impossible...

    • @ghost-user559
      @ghost-user559 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Fabián Horta Yes it does. You can buy lightning to HDMI adapters. I used one to watch Netflix on a TV using my iPhone.

    • @ghost-user559
      @ghost-user559 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get a lightning to HDMI adapter, BUT you don’t get a hub, and so you would have to use it more like a chromebook with cloud storage. But you can easily use usb keyboard and mouse and even a soundbar for speakers, so the only thing you don’t get is ports or hubs.
      I used google drive and similar solutions to turn an old iPhone into a mini computer.

      You can do a lot more than that. I wrote a book on one. You can use all the office applications like pages and you get iMovie for basic editing and GarageBand for music recording.
      You could run a while TH-cam channel off an iPad, but they just don’t market them like that so people don’t know.
      Hook up a soundbar and keyboard and mouse with Bluetooth and an external display, and you have a mini desktop. And even an iPhone can do all of the same things.

      Don’t do it long term. Make sure you unplug it and drain it a few hours a day. And really it will kill the battery eventually, but as long as you have AppleCare or you are ok with using the battery replacement program (like 100$ a battery), than it’s not a bad deal, still cheaper than an iPad and a computer. I’m subscribed, have watched your videos for months and find them interesting, informative and often original. However, of all of the tech TH-camrs that I follow, your sound quality is consistently the poorest. I don’t think I’m alone in this opinion. ..

      I haven't noticed it, and I have watched his videos on my desktop and on my phone - also on my alexa show. His setup is also less "edited" when compared to the standard tech youtube set, which does give a more honest vibe...
