Fun fact: Japeth the Goat, the singing goat in the film, was almost cut out of the film due to the producers and writers thinking he served no purpose to the plot. But kids’ positive response towards the character during a test screening convinced them to keep him in the final film. And it’s a really good thing they listened to the kids because I don’t think the movie wouldn’t have been as funny without him and we wouldn’t have another version of “Be Prepared” that we’d be singing next to Scar’s.

Such a shame Hoodwinked Too was so terrible. This honestly could’ve been a solid contender for the Shrek franchise had it been aloud to evolve properly. Heck, I think it might’ve even worked out well if there was a Hoodwinked TV show! A CSI-esque “crime of the week” comedy series with a fairy tale setting? Who wouldn’t wanna watch that?!

And the classic characters are giving a funny and unique twist to them. Definitely one of the rare things that the Weinstein company did right in terms of animation.

This movie, along with countless others, are why I enjoy watching and supporting good or even great low budget animated movies. You can often find some diamonds in the rough. People tend to have a negative stgma over these kinds of movies simply because they were not made by the usual animation giants like Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks.
As long as you steer clear of Hoodwinked Too, that is...

    • @FeelTheBlaziker

@Camille Le Roux There are many low budget animated movies from across the world that it is very overwhelming to choose. So far, here are my recommendations (including where they're from and where you may be able to find them, I based it on where you can find in the USA since that's where most users would be from):
      - Mosley (New Zealand/China, probably Apple TV via rental)
      - Seal Team (South Africa, Netflix)
      - Leafie, a Hen into the Wild (South Korea, has a heartbreaking ending in the uncensored version, pretty hard to find)
      - Chickenhare and the Hamster of Darkness (Belgium, on Netflix in some countries including the USA)
      - Mortadelo and Filemon: Mission Implaussible (Spain, you can find it in VIX)
      - Even Mice Belong in Heaven (Czech Republic/Czechia, Apple TV via rental)
      - Son of Bigfoot (Belgium, also aniamted by the same studio behind Chickenhare, on Hoopla or Freevee, or you can rent it via Microsoft or Amazon)
      - I Am What I Am (China, also very hard to find due to its very limited theatrical release. You can check IMDb to find the release info)

same goes to Winx Club’s first 3 seasons. Sure, the girls look incredibly thin, and the animation maybe dated, but the complex character development and well structured storytelling sure made up for it. Even when the voice acting isn’t as great in the Cinélume dub, the script sure made up for it. As for the Nickelodeon revival, that’s where things started to go upside down. It featured an all star cast of Keke Palmer, Molly Quinn, Daniella Monet, Matt Shively, Ariana Grande, and Elizabeth Gillies. All of them which, have great performances to the characters, but the scripts lost their quality, resulting in the fans of the old Winx club to hate the revival entirely and wish for the show to end. The powers became more stale and repetitive, there are more forgettably bland characters, the stories tend to lack structure, and the show no longer has a clue on what their audience is.

I could tell this was an independent production, but I had no idea the backstory was this complex. I love an underdog story and though I love Disney films, I'm always hoping for more competition. And yes, this animation is the film's weakest feature, but the cast and characters are what make this not another ordinary fairytale. I think there's a lot here for kids and adults to enjoy.

I also wish that, because I know Hoodwinked Too could have been much better. To be fair to Cory, Todd, and Tony Leech, even if Hoodwinked Too had the best directing to help them write it better instead of changing too much of what they wrote...the first Hoodwinked film had a very unique form of storytelling that was groundbreaking for animated kids' movies for the time and even still today, that would be impossible to do a second time in Hoodwinked Too, so I can at least give them credit for not recycling the same formula and making a genuine effort to expand on the lore of their Hoodwinked world in the sequel. Marvel at least has their head in the game better than the other studios that attempted them. The onyl major setback they faced was when movie theaters shut down for a year, but they managed to keep their relevance due to their connected Disney + shows. Even then, the shows may be working too well, as they're getting more buzz lately. DC pretty much faltered out of the gate with strapping everything to Snyder's vision, and the worst thing is, they could have beaten Marvel to the punch if Superman Returns wasn't a flop. Besides, what else is there to offer? Remakes? Sequels to 30 year old movies that don't match up? The same biopic over and over again? Let's pray we never have to go back to the trend from the 1990's, the sitcom remake. There was, what, like one good one, and even then it drew just as much influence from the original Addams Family New Yorker comics, if not more?

@@beyondthehorizon99 I give those shows and the comics they're based off of all the credit in the world for trying to find the last shred of Super Hero satire that hasn't been done to death yet. Straight up Super Hero stuff isn't exactly this stuffy genre that takes itself too seriously. Most of it has been self aware for quite some time. Not to mention how rampant parody super heroes are. Hell, Plastic Man started out as one way back in the day, and now he's considered an actual serious big time DC character.

I do love the first Hoodwinked & now that I know about its history, I do hope one day we can see what they had with the original casting. Hoodwinked has a special place in my heart because I wanted to see it opening weekend but my parents did not want to go see it, neither one were willing to take me & I was like 14 at the time so I told them that I'm old enough to see a movie alone, why not just drop me off & then pick me up when it's over? My dad agreed it was a good idea but my little sister got upset that I could see the movie & she couldn't so my mom made me take her, it was the only way I was able to see it & I ended up getting in ever so slightly late for the movie too due to the arguing about it, it was still the very beginning of the movie, I missed like the first 30 seconds. Still, it was the first movie I was able to see on my own somewhat, frustrating I had to bring my little sister but she always got to share in my firsts in life because both of my parents were the babies of their families & remembered their older siblings getting stuff first while they had to wait so they thought it was only fair. Enjoyed the movie, that's the most important thing, it was one of the firsts I remember having so little patience for it to have a home release, I knew I was going to spend my allowance on the DVD for it when it did come out & that I did, still have it to this day.
As for the bad animation, I think that's what scared off my parents, both don't like animated stuff for the most part so seeing the bad animation probably had them thinking it was going to be a garbage movie. Also, I'm now questioning if the biggest reason why they wanted me taking my little sister is because I was a teenager at the time, maybe they just didn't want me going to what they thought was a trash kids movie without a kid? My mom is still hung up on the whole animation is for kids thing which ticks me off as someone who absolutely loves animated features. The animation for Hoodwinked couldn't scare me off, I had such an open mind back then & I've always been more of a story driven person anyways. I always felt that whatever you can do to tell a good story, you do it, even if it looks like crap, if the heart is there & it's a story worth telling, people will know & take it for what it is. I know it's easy to rag on it but I kinda like the animation for this movie, not for how it looks but because it just works in a weird sort of way like it didn't really achieve the style they were going for but it just works like it tells an additional story now knowing the history of it, it says "hey, we did a thing, it wasn't easy but we did this with what we could" & I can admire that.

If your mom thought the computer-animation of Hoodwinked! was garbage, she hasn’t seen true garbage with Foodfight! That computer-animation is much worse than Hoodwinked! and would actually scare you off. And like you said, no matter how bad the medium you use for your film looks, if you put effort into your story, then people can look past the movie’s ugly look; which is definitely something Foodfight! did not have because the guy in charge had no idea of how to direct an animated feature.

Regarding the articles about Shrek and Hoodwinked ruining the joy of fairytales and innocence, it should be noted that the original fairytales actually were pretty gruesome and dark, with Hans Christen Anderson fairytales being the most prominent example. This is why Disney usually changed the stories to make them more family oriented, so in a sense, fractured fairy tale films are actually somewhat more faithful to the original source material than Disney’s versions.

Hoodwinked Too's story is pretty heartbreaking. The Weinsteins basically barged in, forced them to put as many pop culture references and idiotic jokes in as possible. The Troll on the bridge wasn't even meant to speak, much less as an effeminate black sassy guy stereotype. Even in the final cut, you can tell they ADR'd as many worse jokes as possible when no character was on screen moving their mouths. Corey Edwards famously chewed the movie out for being drastically taken away from him in terms of what his vision was in the original script. Then he saw history repeat itself with a Fraggle Rock movie which thankfully never happened. Corey would later admit that everything they shoved into the live action Smurfs movie was what they were forcing on his script, right on down to the bad Guitar Hero placement.

It's really sad that the Weinstein company has shown they know how to make or distribute a good film. They've distributed/made movies that won or were nominated for best picture, but in terms of animated films, when they get involved for most of the movies productions, they really have no experience or clue of how to make a animated film, adding things most animated films don't do, not knowing what most animated movie goers want, and making lots of bad decisions. Unfortunately, this trend would continue after Hoodwinked too with The Nut Job, Escape from Planet Earth, etc.
Really unfortunate, because despite what the main CEO of Weinstein did years later that is unacceptable, we wouldn't have gotten Hoodwinked if he and his company didn't get involved. Same reason I said we wouldn't have Pixar today or Disney animation would've most likely died without John Lassenter.
Regardless, hoodwinked is fantastic despite its bad animation. Hoodwinked too is booty bad.

The Hood vs. Evil on Too is the closest so far. It is about the Ages of Man or Suns wherein bombardment of space debris destroys the Earth and the atmosphere is loaded blocking out the Sun for long periods of time, thus in the real story when the woodsman cuts open the wolf the grandmother, mother, and hood fall out, signifying three ages. It is alike the Norse legend of the wolves eating the Sun and Moon.
