I feel like Disney’s films at the time besides Lilo & Stitch were flopping at the box office not because they were hand drawn, but because the stories and characters didn’t grab people like the Pixar films, the Shrek movies, and Ice Age.
If you asked someone to pick between Home on the Range and The Incredibles based on the story without mentioning the animation technique used, they would more likely pick the latter film. You could make Home on the Range CG animated and it would still flop.
Heck, Curious George did better financially than Doogal in February 2006 despite being 2D animation. If you asked someone who has no attachment to either source material which movie sounds more appealing, they would more likely pick Curious George.
What I’m trying to say is that the animation technique doesn’t matter if the story and characters aren’t grabbing audiences. That’s why I think 2D and stop-motion should be allowed to exist alongside 3D.

      @disneyfan8719 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yeah, the fact that all the CG films at the time were big hits and 2D films were flops was arguably more of a coincidence than anything.
The animation community goes on and on about how 2D animation is being treated unfairly when 1. The stories of these so called underrated gems from the early 2000s (although, I would probably consider most of them underrated in a way) didn't grab our attention as much storywise, and 2. They're part of the problem in some ways.
Constant whining and harassment won't get you the 2D films you want! Also, I don't know if you actually saw these 2000s 2D films in theaters or not, but if you didn't, then you probably shouldn't complain much about the decline of 2D if it was partially your dang fault. Lol

Although a success, it’s mixed reviews caused a major shakeup in Disney’s Staff
      1. This was Director Mark Dindal's last credited involvement with an animated film up until Wonder Park, as his career wasn’t doing well enough since Warne Bros. Cats Don’t Dance in 1997 and the other movies he was involved with died in development hell.
      2. This was producer Randy Fullmers last credited movie as he would leave the studio with Dindal to follow a career making guitars, and he would not be in another project until Restrung, a 2014 documentary about his life. Dindal would be credited in the documentary for making illustrations.
      3. It was the final blow to Michael Eisner's time at Disney. Following a decade of failed investments in Disney Theme Parks, plus internal struggles with both Roy E. Disney and Pixar's John Lasseter, Eisner resigned shortly before the film's release, Passing the Torch to Bob Iger. He has since stuck to producing TV shows through The Tornante Company, most notably the critical darling BoJack Horseman, though his creative input has been minimal after the failure of Glenn Martin DDS, which he co-created.
      4. A Direct to Video sequel, simply titled Chicken Little 2, was planned. In it, Chicken Little's childhood sweetheart Abby Mallard would find herself in a Love Triangle with him and Raffaela, a French sheep, inspiring her to get a makeover. The film's poor critical reception and the management shakeup at Disney Animation a year later caused it to be shelved.

@@ltmmoviereviewsharrison3462 Well The Black Cauldron was a huge critical flop and was made right in the middle of the transition from Ron Miller to Michael Eisner, but served as a bit of wake up call that Disney needed to step up their game. Just like how Chicken Little was also a critical flop, made right in the middle of the transition from Micheal Eisner to Bob Iger, and then gave Disney a wake up call to get their act back together. Then there's The Great Mouse Detective and The Princess and the Frog, both of which were directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, were Disney's attempts to get back on their feet, and while both pulled in a pretty penny neither were smash hits. Then there's The Little Mermaid and Tangled which are both animated musical adoptions of princess fairytales with music by Alan Menken, and where both turned down at first but approved literally the next day, and then were smash hits reviving Disney and starting a new renaissance era of Disney animation. Eventually leading to the highest grossing animated movies ever, with a smash hit song about letting go of worries.

"Chicken Little" may be my least favorite from the Disney Animated Canon, but since its modest success at the box office kept the Disney company alive, then I'll give it credit for doing that. That heated argument between Disney and Pixar was probably the most interesting part of this video, especially when this middle ground brought better fortunes for both of them than if the movie was a major hit. Unpopular opinion: This movie is decent enough and people shouldn't be so hard on it. Chicken Little has a lot of things that I like. The quirky comedy, visual gags that remind me of old school Disney shorts, cartoony CGI, cool SCI-FI Subplot, an even cooler original soundtrack(Who doesn't like One Little Slip and Stir it Up?), Social Satire (What many people see it as pure free "mean-spiritedness"), and a cast of charmingly quirky main characters. But what I like most about Chicken Little is the fact that I identified myself a lot with the protagonist, I was also the child with a bad reputation whose nobody had hope, the messages that the film sends brought me hope, strength and motivation to continue . In its bizarre way I find the film extremely motivational and i wish more people could see that.

ElectricDragon505 just to remind you, Brother Bear did not bomb completely at the box office. It was more of a okay Disney animated movie, for some of the people. Including hardcore Disney fans.
Because when it was about bears and so forth, they couldn't resist of how cute and cuddly they were. Even though it was weird that a man if he was a like a native American, was transformed into a bear. That was one of the weirdest story lines ever written for a Brother Bear, a man that transforms into a bear. After when he killed a mother bear, and he had to struggle to find help to transform into a man again.
I believe the story concept a Brother Bear where a man transforms into a bear, after killing a mother bear. And teaching him a lesson of how bears live life and so forth in nature, but he struggles to wanting to be a man again. I believe that type of story concept and probably experiment is really weird.
I did feel bad for Kenai, when he transformed into a bear. Although I wish he shouldn't have killed a mother bear, who was the mother of Coda the bear cub.
But I couldn't resist of how cute and playful Coda was, because he's just a young bear. And really a kid, who just wants to make friends with another bear. Because he lost his mother, and he was trying to hide from hunters. Until he met Kenai, and felt like that he and Kenai should be like brothers as well.
So basically half of the movie of Brother Bear was weird, because of a man killing a mother bear and he transforms into a bear. And struggling to wanting to be a man again and get some help. And the other half of Brother Bear is cute, cuddly, fun and heartwarming. And some of it to give really good action in some parts of the movie.
So with all of this in mind, Brother Bear did not flop and did not bomb at the box office. It was a okay movie for some people, and even hardcore Disney fans. It was a okay and fun movie basically, and some people even say that Brother Bear was the last Disney animated classic to end the Disney Renaissance. For some people, some say Brother Bear is a cult classic, with hardcore Disney fans giving it a cult following.
So classic or cult classic, Brother Bear was a okay and fun Disney animated movie. And really the last Disney animated movie to end the Disney Renaissance animation run, or should I say the final Disney animated movie to make up the Disney animated Renaissance

The sad irony is that the film could have been good if Michael Eisner just let Mark Dindall do what he originally wanted for the film instead of suggesting changes to make it more like their competitors with the pop culture references and songs and being a modern fairy tale spoof like Shrek in order to compete with the big boys.

Sounds like Chicken Little might earn his place in the roster of my idea for a Disney themed fighting game.

*"The rise of The Disney Empire as we know it"*
That sentence is now way more chilling than it should be. Disney's becoming more and more like The Tyranids, they just consume all in their path

Chicken Little saving Disney is both good and bad on one hand Disney has made tons of great things in the time period between Chicken Little and present day opening doors in the industry for talented people but on the other hand once they brought Marvel the company has been very successful sense then but at the cost of their creativity and in terms of quality the company has gone downhill in my opinion with their greed, laziness and controversy with the Chinese government, trying to buy holidays and pretending to care about certain groups of people when it profitable for them. I guess Disney as a company was never and never will be perfect but I just think their flaws have become more apparent now.

Did Michael Eisner consider as a villain and Jeffrey Katzenberg as a hero?
