It's a shame that TLM 2 wasn't a success, because its message is one this world needs: being "grown-up" does NOT mean being unremittingly grimdark. Just the opposite--any edgelord teenager can do THAT. But to acknowledge the darker side of life without allowing oneself to drown in it or blind oneself to the good stuff that does exist--that's real maturity.

@@dalberttran8134 Not really, considering that The Lego Batman Movie was a spin-off with a lower budget than the first film and the only reason why Ninjaco had a chance to be adapted into a film was because of the high levels of faith LEGO put into WAG and Animal Logic. What caused the Lego Movie franchise to crash and burn was simply a case of being far too ambitious, as well as bad timing. The films were all made too quickly between each other, were quite expensive to produce even in comparison to what Disney and Dreamworks made, and by the time the last movie came out, most people had already moved on to other franchises.

I remember first hearing about the first Lego Movie through a video advertising a contest to have a fan's original Lego video be featured in the film. Even though I was a big Lego fan at the time, even I too thought a whole movie based on Lego was a dumb idea. But when the first trailer came out a few years later, all my expectations were blown away and I was excited to see this film. I have seen every Lego film in theatres and I enjoyed them all. The last two maybe not as much as the first two but still. It is sad of what happened to this franchise, but I might give Pharell William's Piece By Piece a chance.

Between 2014-2019, there were plenty of Lego direct to DVD movies such as Lego DC Comics Superheroes (2 specials, and 6 movies), Lego DC Superhero Girls (6 shorts, 1 special, and 2 movies), and Lego Scooby Doo (1 special and 2 movies).

Both Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Toy Story should have been nominated for their achievements in film and animation, with Snow White as the first American feature length animated feature and Toy Story as the first feature length computer animated film. As a kid, I loved the first Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie that came out a few years later. But it was the Lego Ninjago movie that made me see how the franchise wasn't all that awesome (no pun intended). When the Lego movie sequel was announced, I to was excited to watch it. While it may not have been better than the first, it was still entertaining regardless of how people treated it at the box office. I only wish I could've seen it a second and/or third time in theaters.
Overall, these movies made my love for Legos grow from being just a kids toy brand to a whole new level of entertainment. Whatever people say about the Lego Movie franchise and its sequel, they're still, excluding Ninjago, some of the most fun films I've watched in cinema history.

It's very fitting (in an unfortunate way) that the Lego Movie franchise ended like this because just as quick it became a success, it came crumbling down just as quick as you push a Lego sculpture where all the pieces just fall apart only this time, nobody at Warner and the audience wants to pick up the pieces and rebuild it again so it's up to Universal to pick up those pieces, rebuild the franchise and hopefully bring new life to this franchise and frankly, I trust Universal more than Warner Bros. because with the exception of Illumination, they seem to have more passion for their animated properties than Warner Bros. as they just don't seem to give a no. 2 about their animated stuff. From Young Justice: Outsiders to Scoob!, they are like "meh, if it sells, it sells." Not helping matters is that the sequel to Spider-Verse now has a new writer and director who are not from the first one and sufficed to say, it's a bit of a gamble because having sequels with a change in writers and directors from the first one is always a gamble in regards of what quality may come from such a change but alas, we hope for the best.
Granted, Spider-Man has a much bigger fan following than Lego but as we have seen with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, just because Spider-Man is popular as a worldwide icon, that doesn't stop him from having a box office disappointment under his belt so we just hope that Spider-Verse 2 won't be in the same league as that film.

Where did everything went wrong? THE NINJAGO MOVIE.
As far as everyone knew it was a movie made specifically for the Ninjago fans, who tend to be oblivious to that fact that is still a obscure series and nowhere as pop culture famous as other series and definitely not a safe risk to make a movie for in keeping the hype. I saw the movie and thought it was okay, but definitely saw it as a film that should had gone straight to dvd and not theaters, especially as the structure of these films (Fast spaced action and joke delivery, the real human interactions, the hero who needs to learn a lesson, the lego constructs that is hard to tell what is going on-similar to the Bayformers when they change) was getting repetitive in every movie. Not helping was the whole "Cinematic Universe" they immediately went for rather than finish the main trilogy (but Batman was a good call) so hence mix those 2 and you instantly got a Lego movie burnout from audiences.
They should had geared to main audiences than trying to please a small loud minority who didn't even went to see their movie, cause those Ninjago fans are still not teenagers with a disposable income!

Lego Ninjago Movie would probably have alienated some fans of the Masters of Spinjitzu show as a different continuity. The show had done at least six seasons by the time the movie came out, which was a lot of time to give exploration and depth to the ensemble cast. The movie focusing on one person, Lloyd, and not exploring the other five ninja in any depth would reasonably be a turn-off for fans of Cole, Jay, Kai, Zane and Nia, who get lumped with the discovering true potential and unlocking their element arc (which the show had done early on). The fact Lloyd’s character arc was an estranged father/child relationship, a storyline that’s not underrepresented in kids films, can’t have helped.
The fact the movie designs were carried over into the main show and toy line were also a point of contention for some fans, and while the show did explain it having just done a time travel arc the previous season, fans aren’t always pleased with change. Even the Legacy sets that represent early pre-movie seasons keep the movie designs (a cost measure no doubt with the minifig molds).

  • @thomasrdiehl
    @thomasrdiehl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I find it dubitable that Lego even cared about the movies' success or failure. They sell toys, whether the movies are doing well was never their problem. Their terrible direct-to-dvd and direct-to-streaming productions are proof positive of that (yeah, you kinda skipped a lot of non-theatrical releases).
However, both Unikitty and Lego Movie 2 completely failed in toy stores. The Ninjago Movie was notable in that its sets also failed despite being part of Ninjago which was going strong outside of the movie sets. Lego likely saw the franchise starting to have a negative impact on toy sales and that was what broke the deal for them. Add to that how the deal resulted in Lego having to basically license its own name from Warner, and you get an impressive fail.
Note how Unikitty was a success on tv but pure poison on the toy shelves.

Scooby-Doo also had 2 Lego DTV movies and a Lego TV special that aired on Cartoon Network in 2015!

Well. Trends come and go. Looks like we won't be getting our Lego Batman sequel and Billion Brick Race any time soon. Or is it?

I kinda find the Lego movie franchise similar to the shrek franchise.
The first movie was good and beloved by many, the second was a massive success with its money and people, the third wasn't that good and had a decline in the series success, and the 4th movie had mixed reviews (this is all my opinion)

I checked the reviews for both franchises and this is the part where I say you’re wrong. let’s talk about Shrek Now Shrek Was The First Animated Movie to win the first best animated feature nominee and Is Still Loved to this day, Shrek 2 is a Huge Blockbuster success and it’s highly regarded as better then Shrek 1, Shrek the third sucks but had more billion dollar success but SUCKS, And Shrek Forever After Had mixed reviews but is still better then Shrek 3 and a perfect end to Shrek as a whole, Until Puss In Boots took the spotlight, and now shrek is getting a reboot or another sequel, because of universal. Now let’s talk about the LEGO Movie, The LEGO Movie was a major box office hit and critically acclaimed but snubbed at the Oscars even though it should’ve won the title of best animated feature then big hero 6, The LEGO Batman Movie was also Critically Acclaimed and also a major box office hit but also snubbed but it’s for the best because of Coco, The LEGO Ninjago Movie had mixed reviews but it wasn’t that bad as it only had a major success, And The LEGO Movie 2 Was Critically Acclaimed but became a box office bomb for no reason and it should’ve won the title for best animated feature then toy story 4. Yeah the only difference is Shrek Was an Amazing film but then the sequels started to decline whereas the LEGO Movie Was Amazing and had Great Reviews but didn’t decline as other Animated Film Franchises. Plus by time of this reply the LEGO movie is still alive with the unikitty series getting new episodes and the LEGO movie had two PSA videos on LEGOs TH-cam channel.
