THE SOUTH BRONX is an area of the New York City borough of the Bronx. The area comprises neighborhoods in the southern part of the Bronx, such as Concourse, Mott Haven, Melrose, and Port Morris.
In the early 1900s, the South Bronx was originally known as the Manor of Morrisania, as it was the manor of Lewis Morris. As the Morris family continued to expand on the land, an influx of German and Irish immigrants started to populate the area. By the 1930s, the Bronx was considered the "Jewish Borough", as nearly half the population was Jewish. This soon changed as World War II caused rent to increase in many apartments, pushing people out. By the end of the 1950s, the South Bronx was two-thirds African American or Hispanic (of any race).
The South Bronx is known for its hip hop culture and graffiti. Graffiti became popular in the Bronx in the early 1970s, spreading through the New York City Subway system. The South Bronx then became musically notable as hip-hop music, rap, and other creative components started becoming common within the borough.

I lived in South Bronx for about a year, about 10 years ago. I lived on Prospect and Freeman, and I’m pretty sure I was the only white person within a 20 mile radius. 😂 everybody spoke Spanish, with the exception of a few places being bilingual, or speaking English, usually at the bodegas on the street corners. With that being said, a lot of people told me that it was a dirty part of town, that it was ghetto, and dangerous… But I never had any problems there with people, I was never harassed or anything like that. Not only that, but they have the best Dominican food out there… King grill on East 169th is amazing to this day. I went out there just to get some chicken, rice and beans when I visited last fall. Still taste the same as it always has, and great bang for your buck. Everybody that lived on my block knew each other, and everyone was so nice. Treated each other like family. I enjoyed living out there, truly… It reminds me to be humble, and always treat people well, regardless of anything. We’re all just trying to get by in this world. Thanks for the upload!
Thank you for this. I was born & raised in the BX in 1964. 163rd & Kelly St, then lived in 4 other parts of the BX until I settled in NJ. People are just trying to survive. Crime is happening everywhere & frankly I get tired of ppl sh_&+ing on my home boro.
Good for you .. I live in this area .. and there’s a bunch of angry ghetto uneducated frustrated black and Hispanic people live over here by freeman and Bristol .. and they harass me all the time .. I wish I could move .. hopefully soon one day 🥰
@@raineyj560it’s a disgusting neighborhood .. they harass me, follow me, tried to grape me .. I can’t wait to move
@@SexyBeautifulBabe sorry you’re getting harassed, but what does one group of people have to do with the whole neighborhood? Carry mace and a taser and go about your life.
@@SexyBeautifulBabeSounds like ya may have a tinge of racism, don’t go to New York if you don’t respect the culture. Seems like the original poster
Does & New Yorkers can feel that
I will never have an opportunity to see this in my lifetime, thanks for posting. It's quite interesting, I enjoy seeing the businesses and the people. Seeing how other communities live and thrive is terrific.

I grew up just outside The Bronx. You never , ever went to the South Bronx in the 70's. Years ago, it was a dangerous place. It has definitely improved. Thanks for the video.
There was a boxing gym named Jerome Gym somewhere in The South Bronx and I used to go to spar there in early 1980's. I was living upstate at the time then moved to East Brooklyn. I kind of liked the atmosphere of NY in those days. I originally came from a real slum in 1960's Japan. It was like Five Points NY in late 1800's. The Bronx used to be real nice in old days I heard. I mean like decades or 100 years ago. Check this out, this was in 60's. Imagine how it was like in 40's right after WW2. This whole city is like a Disneyland today. I don't mean to insult you or challenge you or anything like that, but I honestly felt real comfortable in NY back in 70's and 80's. To me it was like Disneyland. Everything was new to me. I sensed where not to go near and everything was alright. People were by far nicer back then than today. th-cam.com/video/cHry5vBkHs4/w-d-xo.html
Are those previous slums of Japan now fixed? @@himawalincat9350
True ! South Bronx 1973....No go area, South Bronx 2023, safe, at least in the day time
I grew up in the South Bronx in the 70 & 80's Never had any problems because I know everyone, the good guys & bad guys. When the gang members saw me talking to my mom, they asked who is that, I told them that's my mom. They told me now I know who she is, and we will look out for her!!
@@timmercer6674🧢🧢🧢you sound like Stephen A Smith lying ass
Gotta love the guys at 14:19 playing biggie looks chill af haha
Like a scene from the 90s lol
That's the new york I know
Yeah, it's be really great living above them.... 😐
I've always had a fascination and admiration for these locations in the US. I can't explain it but you feel alive.
you do even with gentrification on the rise some people just wanna live life
Come visit then, SBX NYC!
Someone fix that fire hydrant.
Kudos to the young lady with the dog. She held onto her trash until she reached a trash can. That's how you keep your community clean.
Minus the fact she had her dog off-leash, which is probably against the city ordinances/could cause an issue
Me fascina esto nunca podre conocerlo pero lo veo a traves de tus camaras 😢 bello bello he visto esos barrios de peliculas estoy 😮
The camera quality and stabilizing make this video relaxing to watch
People can always make life better for all just being nice to each other
Nothing stays the same. The only constant thing in life is CHANGE.
The bronx aint overrun by the rich and their children... not yet.
It’s actually insane to me how diverse New York City can be
Only Dominicans and blacks, not much diverse
@@australianpainter42069lol nice try, 30% of new york city is white (which is the main demographic) with the second being hispanics

Classic video tour of the streets of South Bronx, looking good in 2023 !
South Bronx NY has come a long way in 30 years. A tribute to the people. 👏
👏👏👏
Its not the "people" who made S. Bronx come a long way. It was reforms that help clean the place up. Else, it would still be a dump 30 years later.
A tribute to other people's tax dollars
As a city girl, I love hearing the sounds of the city, since I'm unable to see the sights!
South BX native here and new to your channel, thanks for the stroll and please keep em coming.
Great walks, flying out next week for our 6th visit, love NYC, its my happy place, you have given me some new ideas for places to visit, thanks!

Looks like a bunch of homeless people, sidewalk sellers & people with to much time on their hands in this video.

Hi from France ! These walks lead me to philosophical and existential questions 😊😅
Like, why does a camera's view bob up and down as you walk down the street, but direct eye-vision doesn't?
Merci
Ya should do one of Paris
thanks Julien, a little further up on St. Ann's, and you would've hit my old stompin' grounds. but on a positive note it was great. thanks again.

@@XxPrettyLiaxX What are you talking about? Anyone lived there, the odds of getting mugged or shot are extremely high!
@@travellmcintosh That may have been true 45 years ago, but it is certainly not the case today. The South Bronx has evolved into another gentrified neighborhood in NYC, much like Harlem.

Oh wow! South Bronx looks more urban and walkable as the most US-Cities!
As messed up as the state of the city is today. There is nothing quite like energy you feel as you walk through a neighborhood that has still not yet been over ran with hipsters and people from other states. The music, the smells, the people hanging out in the street enjoying what they have even if it’s not much. Theres still a decent amount of neighborhoods that have not lost all of their identity yet. Even if they’re all not the safest of places there’s something I can’t quite put exactly put my finger on that makes them so amazing. Theres truly no other places like these in the entire country.
And it’s hard to describe precisely unless you have been there to experience it yourself. Wouldn’t wanna be from any other place in the world.
People living their lives ❤️
