The sudden metallic sound from the tracks, the random cough you hear when you know your alone. Your footsteps sound like fireworks on the 4th of July. Definitely a 2am kinda ride.
2:00am is around the time homeless people enter the subway stations to say warm and sleep , I use to be homeless so I know, peace to you for showing the homeless problem in New York.
The problem is the homeless people. Because shelters exist. But because so many are on drugs and have mental illnesses they prefer being homeless. I know someone who has a whole family and a house. Will not live in there. But will sleep standing on a sidewalk.

I'm from Berlin and I had no ideas it was this bad in NYC. We have similar issues but not like this (yet). I fear this is where we're headed if homelessness and cost of living is not tackled. Wishing all the best to all of you out there. Stay safe.
My family in Germany has the same issues. My brother is homeless and addicted to heroin in Stuttgart, and there's so many youtube channels showing the homeless in Germany. This is spreading everywhere. I am from Germany and I live in the USA. But not in NYC. That place isn't good. Germany is not special. I am glad that I left Germany.

I’m from Brooklyn ny born and raised..it’s wild out there yet it’s no trouble unless you are looking to make trouble but if you come in peace mind your business stay alert aware and mindful you will be just fine in NY other then that I love what you do my guy just be safe brother.. your in God hands.. stay blessed be safe
Many do not understand the culture of New York City. If you mind your own business and stay alert you travel anytime of the day or night without incident. I live in New York for 20 years and never had a problem and l am not scared to travel any hour.

My family is in Germany and I grew up in New York..its not like this in Germany and it's very bad, in NY..laws have changed, no one hoes to jail.. people don't even have to pay if they don't want to it's really sad what it's become
I am Swedish and planning to go to New York. Your video showing 30 minutes of subway shows openly and honestly what it's actually like down there, during that time. Your video is very important to us outside of New York, to create a situational picture that makes us aware, but we should not be terrified. I already knew it would be bad in the subway, but here it's like actually experiencing it. Overall, New York is full of social problems, but also a city of great experiences, full of culture, history, entertainment and fun. I would probably not discourage people from going there, but be on your guard, and be aware of the risks. Summary. Go there and enjoy, but be aware of the risks.
This was taken as NYC was still recovering from COVID, overnight and I am thinking when it was cold so the homeless go down there to stay warm. It is quite different since then. Lots more riders, less homeless.
Hahaha. When you see an empty car, and you're like "Yes! This is my lucky day!" You get on and realize why it's empty. Because one homeless guy is sleeping in there and stinking the car up to high heaven. You gotta walk between cars, if the doors aren't locked. That feet funk and stale urine stink ain't no joke. That's one instance where this mask mandate can be a blessing.
If you are a New Yorker by now you know the trick , when a train is pulling into a station and there is an empty car you run away from the empty car. Its only the Tourist or people not familiar that would go in and then realize its homeless people or you cannot take the smell of what's inside.
@@chrisc1881 Or there's no A/C in the Summer. But I take the train at all kinds of hours, so half the time, empty cars are the rule, not the exception. Then with this pandemic, the trains are less crowded too.

You see people like this and you just wonder what happened and where they went so wrong to become that way. At some point these might've been regular people who had jobs or went to school, they had friends and family. Then something just changed.
NYC is like doing everything you need to achieve your goal (job, studies, career in general) and then leaving. It's not a city to live forever, it's temporary, especially in the medium term.
Jason when I was going to work it looked like that and smelled like that. I see nothing has changed. Been working home for 2 yrs thank God. Hope you and mom are doing well. NYC subways are one of the most depressive places to be in! I live in NYC and am finishing law school this year, can't wait to leave! It's not just the homeless people on it, it's the bright florescent lights the dirty stations and the general hardness of the place and people which gets old very fast.

Whenever I would see a train that was crowded but one cart that was completely empty, I immediately knew why. But it was funny watching people enter and then immediately walk out.
The thing I hate about taking the subway at that time is that it usually takes close to 30 minutes on average for a train sometimes longer once it's after midnight u wait for ever for a train
@@weyonert123 I agree but sometimes it's just ridiculous I had one time I was leaving my friends house and normally it's about 1 hour ride I have to take 2 trains I got to the station around 1:35 didn't get home till like 4:30 I remember I spent like an hour and a half just waiting for two trains that night maybe longer and on top of that the train wasn't even running correctly which added more time and it's was not driving at normal speed

Brilliant Jason. I read a book years ago called "Subways are for Sleeping" circa the late 1950s. You recaptured it in video 60 years later. The video disturbed me greatly. But that's OK. Something I had to see. Thank you sir for your film work!
Hi Jason i was born and raised in East New York Brooklyn in the late 1940s. 1960s and when i was seperated from military service in 1967 i lived in Freeport Long Island. i left new York for Florida in 1971 and have lived here ever since. those subway stations and the trains are alot cleaner than what i remember them as being, but it is still New York and the part people don't get to see. thanks for this video do more of these please.
Hi Frank, I'm a lot younger than you, I've been born and raised in NY. Really fascinates me that the subway is cleaner now than it was back then. I would have thought the opposite. Since I use the subway every day, it works quite well for me fortunately!
it got a lot better with Guilliani and his no-mercy policing approach, then the Bush and Obama years crime nationally was falling anyways so the MTA was very clean and safe then last 4-5 years it has slightly gotten worse, but NOWHERE near as bad as it was in the 70s and 80s. homeless people need help not to get kicked off but the subway cannot be a homeless shelter that just hurts ridership even more and makes the problem worse. the MTA is starting down this vicious cycle of crime scaring off ridership, and high ridership generally= lower crime.

You had the best times in NY...A brand new home in Florida in 1971 was under $20,000....I moved to Florida in 1997 and a brand new 3/2/2 home was about $40,000..not bad..that same home now will cost you $400,000.
As I've been saying for over a decade, real estate prices are far too high for such a dump. NY isn't the jewel it was in the 50s. Today, it's a rundown garbage dump..

Fortunately, I haven't had the need to use the nyc subway or busses for over 20 years now and it is a huge relief. Commuting from 5:30 am to 10am and 2:30pm to 5:20pm was the worst especially during school days. The fights, the super packed spaces, arguments, delays, odors and overall weirdness was too much. After midnight was another story. I can't imagine how it is today.
Born,raised and still in NYC and NEVER got on the train this late.I will stay at a club till daylight or get a cab. Especially in the crazy Crack 80s and 90s

The reason why you're seeing homeless people living on subways is because the gang violence, other violent offenders, mentally ill, and poor conditions have made the homeless shelters run wild. They can't take the horrible conditions of those shelters and would rather have peace on Subways where people taking public transportation will most likely leave them alone and not be bothered.
I wish that were true (then we could just clean up the shelters....) but from what I see as an MD it is untreated mental illness (refusing meds, their “right” and drug/alcohol use-shelters throw people out who are caught using and won’t obey curfews and rules.
Exactly!! They need more housing and yes they have kept a lot of missions nasty and seems they don't want them to get out of those situations. People need space and opportunity to get somewhere in life and have a life!! I know we are going through hard times but dang we always have!! It's time for change!! Healing and renewed! MTA is fully aware of this they do not have the budget nor a strategy in dealing with it. Remember this is NYC for every 1 person that says kick sleepers off trains there are 5 activists saying that is anti-poverty and moves homelessness instead of solving it (they're right). This is also the condition of low ridership due to the rona, high ridership normally fixes these problems naturally but yes the issue of violence and disorder on the mta is only getting worse

Brilliant ,been to NYC quite a few times and taken the subway but never during those hours , and it’s like the lower astral down there. Very atmospheric , you captured the whole feel and you could almost smell it . Please make more as great to see and just to see life in a world within a world of counter culture at its rawest

It is. That's why I like to take the bus. It's not entirely safe on the bus but slightly safer than the train. Also, I want to get a car one day. I hate the trains where I have to sit face to face to someone. Like, I don't wanna look at you dude lol.
I see your underground runs all thru the night. It looks quite depressing tbh. I live in London UK. Our underground system dont run all night, only a few lines at wkends. Most stop around 12ish midnight & start again at 5am. Our trains are over crowded but most our stations look cleaner then yours and better maintained, from what I see there. Phone mugging is high on our London streets here. especially by the stations. No drinking, smoking, allowed on our trains. All our stations close their gates up for the night. So you would have to rely on lots of bus connections to get around in the night. Great video....
I lived in the UK for a few years and rode the underground many times. It definitely feels safer than riding the subway, but the fares aren't as high. Also, the underground can sometimes get mighty uncomfortable when temperatures are high. Not in NYC.
The lowest level of the West 4th Street Station has got to be one of the hottest in the system during the late Summer months. Stifling humidity also adds to the misery.
Native new yawker here. Lived here pretty much all my life. What you see is what is. All this has been like that now for decades. Only a few select stations got upgraded. Now let's see you brave rush hour morning or night.
Crime in NYC was far higher in the 70s and reached its peak in 1981. It has never been that high again, so in other words, NYC used to be far worse than it is today.
I rode these late night trains for 12 years. Never had anything bad happen to me. But I saw some crazy stuff. It’s the same in any big city. Just be aware of your surroundings. Keep your eyes off your phone.
Live in NYC for 20 years and never had anything done to me as well. I travel the train all hours of the day and night. You always look out for your safety as in any big city. I have seen lots of crazy stuff like sex on the train but in NY you mind your own business and just keep moving.

Wow thanks for making this video I am a disabled person I have a home health care aide who caught covid last week or two weeks ago I hope she's okay now I can see how easy it is to catch diseases in the subway system homeless people mixed together with everyday citizens

It was unbelievably scary, so many homeless people, drug addicts all gathered together. I was born and raised in Chongqing, China, and have never seen such a horrific scene.

Don't know if my last post made it. I'm a retired NYC subway conductor(1983-2014). My childhood was of scary incandescent stations, dark tunnels, REALLY noisy trains. The change to flourescent lights was actually a big thing. W4? That's Covid empty. It usually rivals 42 or 34. Been there a few overnights.
I’m a black suburbanian, grew up in the suburbs and I’m happily staying in the suburbs, I travel alot sometimes to cities and id rather be in the burbs with less crime, less crackheads, less people, less smells and less taxes.
I worked for NYC Transit for almost 38 years, most as an Operations Manager for Subways. This was docile compared to what I saw in the years I worked midnights (1985 and 2009-2010).

Thank God for those of us that have a warm place to sleep,and a roof over our heads. We do not kow how these individuals became homeless. I pray that God will form a hedge of protection around all his people that are less fortunate. In addition a lot of people that you see on the trains are suffering from mental illness. Some of the shelters are dangerous.
Some of these people sleeping in the train are homeless.....but some are exhausted from work three jobs and or school...life is life in the big city ❤NYC

I am Swedish and planning to go to New York. Your video showing 30 minutes of subway shows openly and honestly what it's actually like down there, during that time. Your video is very important to us outside of New York, to create a situational picture that makes us aware, but we should not be terrified. I already knew it would be bad in the subway, but here it's like actually experiencing it. Overall, New York is full of social problems, but also a city of great experiences, full of culture, history, entertainment and fun. I would probably not discourage people from going there, but be on your guard, and be aware of the risks. Summary. Go there and enjoy, but be aware of the risks.
This was taken as NYC was still recovering from COVID, overnight and I am thinking when it was cold so the homeless go down there to stay warm. It is quite different since then. Lots more riders, less homeless.
Hahaha. When you see an empty car, and you're like "Yes! This is my lucky day!" You get on and realize why it's empty. Because one homeless guy is sleeping in there and stinking the car up to high heaven.

If you are a New Yorker by now you know the trick , when a train is pulling into a station and there is an empty car you run away from the empty car. Its only the Tourist or people not familiar that would go in and then realize its homeless people or you cannot take the smell of what's inside.

NYC subways are one of the most depressive places to be in! I live in NYC and am finishing law school this year, can't wait to leave! It's not just the homeless people on it, it's the bright florescent lights the dirty stations and the general hardness of the place and people which gets old very fast.

Whenever I would see a train that was crowded but one cart that was completely empty, I immediately knew why. But it was funny watching people enter and then immediately walk out.

The thing I hate about taking the subway at that time is that it usually takes close to 30 minutes on average for a train sometimes longer once it's after midnight u wait for ever for a train

Most people aren't using the subway at that time, so it makes sense to provide less service.

Hi Jason i was born and raised in East New York Brooklyn in the late 1940s. 1960s and when i was seperated from military service in 1967 i lived in Freeport Long Island. i left new York for Florida in 1971 and have lived here ever since. those subway stations and the trains are alot cleaner than what i remember them as being, but it is still New York and the part people don't get to see. thanks for this video do more of these please.

Hi Frank, I'm a lot younger than you, I've been born and raised in NY. Really fascinates me that the subway is cleaner now than it was back then. I would have thought the opposite. Since I use the subway every day, it works quite well for me fortunately!
it got a lot better with Guilliani and his no-mercy policing approach, then the Bush and Obama years crime nationally was falling anyways so the MTA was very clean and safe then last 4-5 years it has slightly gotten worse, but NOWHERE near as bad as it was in the 70s and 80s. homeless people need help not to get kicked off but the subway cannot be a homeless shelter that just hurts ridership even more and makes the problem worse. the MTA is starting down this vicious cycle of crime scaring off ridership, and high ridership generally= lower crime.

You had the best times in NY...A brand new home in Florida in 1971 was under $20,000....I moved to Florida in 1997 and a brand new 3/2/2 home was about $40,000..not bad..that same home now will cost you $400,000.

Fortunately, I haven't had the need to use the nyc subway or busses for over 20 years now and it is a huge relief.
Commuting from 5:30 am to 10am and 2:30pm to 5:20pm was the worst especially during school days.
The fights, the super packed spaces, arguments, delays, odors and overall weirdness was too much.
After midnight was another story.
I can't imagine how it is today.

The reason why you're seeing homeless people living on subways is because the gang violence, other violent offenders, mentally ill, and poor conditions have made the homeless shelters run wild. They can't take the horrible conditions of those shelters and would rather have peace on Subways where people taking public transportation will most likely leave them alone and not be bothered.
I wish that were true (then we could just clean up the shelters....) but from what I see as an MD it is untreated mental illness (refusing meds, their “right” and drug/alcohol use-shelters throw people out who are caught using and won’t obey curfews and rules.
And the shelters receive around $4k per person from the state.

MTA is fully aware of this they do not have the budget nor a strategy in dealing with it. Remember this is NYC for every 1 person that says kick sleepers off trains there are 5 activists saying that is anti-poverty and moves homelessness instead of solving it (they're right). This is also the condition of low ridership due to the rona, high ridership normally fixes these problems naturally but yes the issue of violence and disorder on the mta is only getting worse

I see your underground runs all thru the night. It looks quite depressing tbh. I live in London UK. Our underground system dont run all night, only a few lines at wkends. Most stop around 12ish midnight & start again at 5am. Our trains are over crowded but most our stations look cleaner then yours and better maintained, from what I see there. Phone mugging is high on our London streets here. especially by the stations. No drinking, smoking, allowed on our trains. All our stations close their gates up for the night. So you would have to rely on lots of bus connections to get around in the night. Great video....
I lived in the UK for a few years and rode the underground many times. It definitely feels safer than riding the subway, but the fares aren't as high. Also, the underground can sometimes get mighty uncomfortable when temperatures are high. Not in NYC.
The lowest level of the West 4th Street Station has got to be one of the hottest in the system during the late Summer months. Stifling humidity also adds to the misery.

Crime in NYC was far higher in the 70s and reached its peak in 1981. It has never been that high again, so in other words, NYC used to be far worse than it is today.

I rode these late night trains for 12 years. Never had anything bad happen to me. But I saw some crazy stuff. It’s the same in any big city. Just be aware of your surroundings. Keep your eyes off your phone.
Live in NYC for 20 years and never had anything done to me as well. I travel the train all hours of the day and night. You always look out for your safety as in any big city. I have seen lots of crazy stuff like sex on the train but in NY you mind your own business and just keep moving.

Don't know if my last post made it. I'm a retired NYC subway conductor(1983-2014). My childhood was of scary incandescent stations, dark tunnels, REALLY noisy trains. The change to flourescent lights was actually a big thing. W4? That's Covid empty. It usually rivals 42 or 34. Been there a few overnights.

I worked for NYC Transit for almost 38 years, most as an Operations Manager for Subways. This was docile compared to what I saw in the years I worked midnights (1985 and 2009-2010).

I pray that God will form a hedge of protection around all his people that are less fortunate. In addition a lot of people that you see on the trains are suffering from mental illness. Some of the shelters are dangerous.
And they belong back in the hospitals

Some of these people sleeping in the train are homeless.....but some are exhausted from work three jobs and or school...life is life in the big city ❤NYC

In NYC you have to choose between this or paying $600 a month insurance and a car note if you have one for a $15,000 car
Not to mention traffic and parking in the city. I drove to Manhattan once. Never again!!

I am proud of these fellow Americans. They work so hard at their careers during the day that they can’t even stay awake on the subway ride home. True patriots.
You have lots of balls to hang around the subways at this pandemic with all those homeless people everywhere. Prior to pandemic riding the subways at 2am was fine. Now it is scary.

Not really, they don’t bother anyone, they are just homeless. It’s been that way in the eighties as well, back then the trains were much worse and I rode the, all hours of the night.

It's terrible. At 3am ppl sagging their pants hopping on the train with a BMX and wearing a bandana with a speaker blasting rap music. Drug deals in the open it's crazy and it stinks
I uses to live in NYC's many years ago and i always worked at 🌙 night this takes me back those days when i worked at night

Appreciate you showing us the subway in the early morning. Homelessness is growing around the world, even in cities that didn't have that problem. Last Days are here and progressing.God has a plan in which righteousness is to dwell on a paradise earth soon to come.
