It remains to be seen how well the AI Integration into the Nest works and how adaptable it really is. Simply identifying a pattern of users switching temperature to 68 in summer (when it is 80+ outside for several weeks and folks are at home on weekend/Saturday) and then suggesting to switch to 68 (when it is now fall and outside temperature is a more comfortable 74 on weekends) might not be what all users might want? In short, is it simple pattern recognition or is the AI actually taking into consideration other weather related parameters/comfort factors. As for the streamer CPU speed boost, Google seems to prioritize "planned obsolescence" - e.g. considering the upgrade roadmap for Google TV, this streamer should be viable for 'x years' down the road beyond which their devices become slow and unusable?
If Google wants any feedback, I hope you let them know that enthusiasts don't trust them not to kill an ecosystem anymore. They're always abandoning products and killing the cloud servers.
Google really missed the boat on the streamer. So much potential to release a superior option to the Shield and Apple TV and they release something that's barely an upgrade over the 4 year old Chromecast for double the price...
Huge miss not putting the latest S905X5 chipset in the streamer to bring it up to par with those other devices you mentioned, apparently it’s only using the same chipset as the 2021 Fire Stick Max so already obsolete, looked so promising with more storage, RAM & HDMI 2.1
As pretty and compelling as it is - I think I'm going to look at some other options when I upgrade. Google burned that bridge and I'm not wanting to take any additional chances with my home automation components.
Think the old thermostat had thread but not open-thread to communicate with nest protects. I’d be willing to bet this one has thread but not open-thread too. Loads of stuff was USA only in the old Nest range. I wonder which stuff will make it across to Europe.
The annoying thing with smart thermostats is not understanding comfort is a combination of humidity and temperature. I have as much confidence that AI solves this the way google thinks their updated streamer is a game changer. If it ever gets hot/uncomfortable, I just set the temperature 2 degrees lower, not set a specific temperature for the house; Big Consumer Tech seems not not understand this lol
i always had trouble with nest and my trane system with nest not turning on my aux heat in the winter time... switched to ecobee and no problems since, except for getting rid of developer keys.
Back in the day I've had a Nest doorbell. The app never knew if I was home or not. No problem for the doorbell. But I didn't dare to buy the thermostat. Bought a Tado.
Made the mistake of a Nest Doorbell and Thermostat combo, on top of the thermostat needing a paid API, it refuses to turn on the heat while hard-wired if the backup battery is not in place (why? It has the C Wire...). The doorbell apparently only uses the hard-wired connection to charge, but can't operate at the same time. The battery is prone to overheating (in the bay area winter of all places), which results in the device being offline often unless it is set to potato quality and short and useless event times.
@@TechDogeth my nest works perfectly and will upgrade to the latest one. I can’t relate to having no power and the battery overheating bc it never does.
Please could you make a dedicated updated video on the Gemini integrations coming to nest hardware. Sounds really interesting and I’d love to learn more about them!
I left an apartment a couple years back that had a smart thermostat and it was life changing. Not having a major house feature appliance end up in the google graveyard is a plus. Just put Matter on every google device from here on out...
And yeah, Streamer is a terrible name. Chromecast "Anything" woulda been better. However, it's *lack* of power and features may justify the name... it just streams stuff, nothing done well natively.
Sounds like a fun trip! I’m excited to see what people think when they’ve had a chance to use them longer. I’m still team ecobee since the sensors do occupancy detection and averaging
Does it work with modulating, high-efficiency furnaces yet though? Being stuck with Lennox’s medieval thermostat sucks but it’s the only thermostat that works with a modulating furnace!
I had a Nest and I loved it. When I moved to my new house, it didn’t work with my HVAC system. I can’t remember why it didn’t work. I have an Echobee and it is ok.
I had a Google nest and it was so invasive I switched it out got the Honeywell T5 smart thermostat. Sorry Google I don't want to hand over total control to you.
can you check if you can ask google "find my remote" instead of pressing the button on the "streamer" and I'm pretty sure they will come out with a "pro streamer" soon
I think the Ethernet port on the streamer is a good idea, but it has followed the usual Google upgrade path where it is an incremental upgrade rather than a major upgrade. I do like the new features of the new Nest Thermostat, but I don't think it's worth the upgrade over the previous model just yet. Improvements for sure, but like the streamer, it is more incremental than a major update.
It's disappointing but not surprising to hear they are discontinuing the Chromecast when the new Streamer comes out. People like things hidden, so they make something that needs to be out in the open, and ditch the thing that can be hidden. They should keep both products on the shelf but google probably know that if they did, most people wouldn't buy the streamer.
Dang. I really like the look of that nest thermostat. Im starting from scratch. Google streamer, yeah i might get this too, im on diy train and i find the content i want to watch most is on YT. I look forward to your vids on these products. Really surprised, amazon hasnt tried to improve twitch to have more YT capabilities or netflix purchase something to compete.
can the gold thermostat have a black background? in promo pics it shows a matching gold background. but id prefer black background for color contrast with the white numbers/letters
I look forward to testing out the new google streamer. I plan on picking up one when its released in Australia and see what I think of it. But I am curious of mounting options for the new stream behind the tv as half the tv's in my house are wall mounted so have no table to place the streamer on. But I assume just like say a apple tv. Either google or the 3d printer world will come up with a self print holder for the streamer that might allow it to be held in place.
I'm not thrilled with my Nest E. Mostly software related. Basic features like setting actual hours for when to use a second temp sensor. It's just 4 options: Morning, Day, Evening and Night. Like how hard would it be to customize those hours? I'd also love to see my HVAC system usage on the same day! I shouldn't need to wait for the day to end to see usage. And it would be nice if it graphed the temp and humidity in my home throughout the day. That would be great to see historical data in the app! If it dies, I'll be switching to Ecobee. After all, it's a thermostat, and it does work fine as that. Just missing some basic features that I believe could have been added over the years I've had it
can I just plug the new puck/display into the current setup? or do I have to replace the heatlink as well? I've literally just had the new 3rd gen installed and LOVE the look of this new puck, but I'm reluctant to go and pay an engineer to install the setup again - but if I can just replace the puck/display, then that's not as bad.
Unrelated comment, but for visibility, can you please do an in depth video on how you setup your hsm200 multisensor in your various automations? I can’t find anything useful on the internet and I can’t seem to make my light turn red or set a color in the automatons. Just light on or off. Thanks
Do those Gemini created Automations require the internet to run, or can they just run as long as local Wi-Fi is active? Anything which requires the internet to work is a deal-breaker for me
Ecobee is still the answer as this is more expensive and doesn't provide any benefits as it can be connected locally to home assistant via homekit integration for a lower price.
Glad that you touched on the new chromecast. The current one is so sluggish, I’m dubious than 22% faster is anywhere near enough for current expectation. Not a fan of the Google streamer, they are charging premium prices for mid-range performance. Not an apple guy but if you spend a little bit more the Apple TV is a much-much better bang for your buck
I would not get the streamer to replace the 2 Google TV dongles I have now. $99 is just way too high for not very much gain when a usb c dongle solves most of the problems.
