I had the UHD+ 1TB 1650Ti version delivered last Saturday so I have had time with it, its a very well build beautiful laptop. Dell gave me 14% off so it was £1977 from £2299. I have very slight pretravel with the mouse pad, even touching my wrist on it when type makes it click so I contact tell to return it, they offered a further 10% discount to keep it (24% in total making it £1747 tax inclusive) but having slept on it, I am still going to return it. As Dell does not manufactures displays, they can only use what is available on the market. A 16:10 15" OLED display is simply not available at the moment.
However - do notice the XPS 15 uses a IGZO4 panel from Sharp. That means less power consumption, resulting in better battery life :)

Xps 15 has given me so many problems. My first one had screen glitching, screen freezing, volume not working, brightness not changing, and loose trackpad. After getting a replacement it still had problems with screen freezing, screen glitching, volume not working correctly, and freezing on startup causing it to only turn on the fan. Its hard to get help at night sometimes even though dell premium support plus is supposed to 24/7. If you buy this laptop return it asap if you experience any issues

    Hi Tom,
    thanks a lot for the insightful review, incl. pro and con. I'm on the edge of buying this device as a travel-photo-editing-machine and would like to ask few questions;
    1) How heavy is the charger, and given it's USB-C, can you replace it with third party in case it fails in the field?
    2) Do you expect Dell to add a Ryzen model later?
    3) Do you have a chance to compare it to the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2? The ThinkPad is just a little bit older, but also offers a small form factor, full size SD-Card and adds more interfaces, such as USB-A without the need for dongles. I think you get my point on that one.
    Thanks a ton! Chris

For those of you guys planning on buying the Dell XPS 15, I'll give you my experience over the past 5 months of using this laptop.
I needed a new laptop to study mechanical engineering in university. I was deciding between the Macbook Pro with the M1 chip or the Dell XPS 15. But after reading and watching hundreds of reviews online about how XPS 15 and Mac are basically the same, XPS is better for gaming, and how Mac is bad for ME, I decided to get the Dell XPS 15 in March.
    PROS.
    - The laptop arrived three weeks after I ordered it-- It was estimated to take 5 weeks, but I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived two weeks early.
    - The keys are extremely satisfying to press--which allowed me to get a lot of work done simply because I was addicted to tapping the keys.
    - The screen is very wide and filling--allows you to focus on everything you are working on.
    - Battery life--I could watch twitch streams for 6 hours straight and the laptop would still have around 55~60% (from 100%).
    - Dongle. USB and HDMI dongle included with the laptop.
    CONS.
    - The trackpad. Every time I left-click using the trackpad, it feels as though the bottom of the trackpad is getting stuck to some type of glue and once I lift my finger off the trackpad, the trackpad lifts off the glue and leaves this distasteful sound. I found this problem straight from when I unboxed the laptop.
    - 2 weeks after purchasing the XPS 15, the screen started having issues. If you divide the screen into 4 sections, the bottom right side has a constant noticeable flickering. I tried doing everything to fix it but it just wouldn't go away. Every single time the laptop goes into sleep mode or I shut it off and reboot it, this same problem persists. After awhile, I simply gave up and started ignoring the flickering. (Only thing I have noticed that helps is plugging in the charger and using the device for one or two hours and the flickering gradually fades away.)
    - Screen freezes every now and then. This has occurred around once a week for every week since March--when I first got the XPS 15.
    - In-built camera. Very crummy resolution.
    - Ports+dongles. There is a high-pitched whirring sound that does not go away if a dongle is plugged in.
This problem does not persist if there is no dongle. However, as a ME student and gamer, I almost always use a mouse that is connected to the laptop.
    - Speakers/sound system produce momentary static if I use them for the first time of the day.
-Customer service. Basically inexistent. I moved to a different country (for university) after buying the laptop, and Dell told me that I couldn't get any help if I wasn't in the country it was delivered to. Even with the warranty, I am basically guaranteed nothing.
    - League of Legends Gaming. The bottom half of the entire screen lags hard. It wasn't there for the first couple of weeks, but after 1 month, the entire bottom half of the screen momentarily freezes and unfreezes--constantly throughout the game. This persists until I connect the charger.
Overall, I would say the majority of problems I have had with the computer is hardware related.
Considering the price of the Dell XPS 15, I would trade it in for a Macbook Pro in a heartbeat and invest a bit more money in a company that has a much more reliable product and will actually help in solving problems related to their products.
For its price, the XPS 15 is NOT WORTH. I expected a MUCH better device with close to no hardware problems.
I Literally went two times higher than my dedicated budget and spent almost 2 years of savings (around $2400 with tax+extra for shipping) for this laptop.
For students who are on a budget--like I was--, I would recommend a Samsung device. Before the XPS 15, I used the Samsung notebook 9 (~$1,200) for 6 years. Games (Wizard101, League of Legends, Fortnite) worked perfectly on my Samsung device for all 6 years. All the workload that my Dell seems to be unable to handle worked unbelievably smoothly on my Samsung device.
Good luck choosing a device everyone.

Sounds like you’ve had a poor experience. I’d expect no hardware issues for this price. Im a MSc student so similar position to you. I use a 2015 MacBook Pro running windows on bootcamp which is ideal so considering a new top spec windows laptop. Seems like a nearly impossible mission.

This might help people out that are looking to buy the dell xps 15 9500.
I bought the xps 15 9500 on 27th Dec 2020 but i only received it on 28th Jan 2021. It arrived from china. Seems to be a delay but i didn't mind waiting.
Before i start one thing really bugs me is the quality of the webcam. I didn't see any reviews on the webcam before i bought the laptop. The webcam is really qutie grainy and my 10 year old dell xps laptop is 100 times better in webcam quality. I did not expect this from a top of the range laptop. When i researched this further, i found out that the bad quality is due dell choosing a bottom of the barrel sensor for the camera and becuase the camera has to fit in the very small bezel. Some suggestions were to buy a seperate web camera which made a huge difference. Personally, i don't want to go through the hassle of returning the laptop for the webcam so if i intend to use it alot, i will probably buy a webcam to plug in via usb. However i am very disappointed at the webcam quality (0.9MP max) for such an expensive lapotp.
I bought mine in silver i7 16gb 1tb, and the trackpad issue of it being loose is not there. I am happy i went for the matt screen and not the UHD screen. It does get a little warm on the left hand side of the laptop if im using it for a long period.
The trackpad sometimes doesn't register my right click, not sure why. When i try clicking in the bottom right corner of the trackpad it sometimes doesnt register it, it's intermittent but it seems to have gone away now since i started using the laptop more. If the issue persists i will update this comment.
Other than that the laptop has been great and the sound quality is great to.
    Hopefully this will help someone.

For whatever is worth, just wanted to share why I've just returned my new XPS 9500, bought this at an excellent price with 32gb and 1TB, i7 and 4k version. After waiting for a month to arrive, and , testing for one week, found the following: 1) It is a beautiful looking lap top, probably better looking than the MBP, 2) speakers were better than I expected based on so many reviews, 3) display was a disappointment, the colors looked over saturated and not natural looking, not sure if this is the nature of the 4K displays, but, I compared with my old MBP retina from 2014 and that old box had , to my eyes, a better color rendering, I was really surprised since the XPS was supposed to be one of the best in terms off matching SRGB colors, 4) The graphics card was defective, while I was watching TH-cam videos on Chrome or the MS version, the video was not smooth, and would be choppy, it would freeze for a fraction of a sec and then continue , none of my other 3 lap tops had this problem, not a major issues, that probably could been taken care by Dell, 5} Idid not see any issues on the track pad, other that would be noisy every time I would touch to use it, and....the deal breaker for me was the lack of a good cooling system, I was really surprised to see how hot it got, even just surfing the net or watching some TH-cam videos, got worst using Lightroom to download some heavy raw files (granted, it was fast, but ...got noisy and hot)........for me, this was a deal breaker because I wanted to use for the intended purpose of a laptop, on my lap !!!......I'll probably wait for the Apple MBP M1X 16", or look for an AMD based PC ( I use both OS for many particular reasons) , looks like the HP Envy line has some of those models....I was so sad to see it go back, it is truly a pice of art ....that I could not use......

Mine never had fan noise, and the keyboard on the left side was always too hot to use comfortably. The screen kept flickering/dimming even though I disabled the self-dimming feature. The touchpad seemed off as well. I kept having to tab it several times for it to acknowledge my press, and while scrolling on the touchpad, it would often see it has a push command. Had the usual Killer issues with having to delete the Killer software package and just install the drivers to get the best performance from the wireless. I also noticed that even though I entirely shut down the system, it would auto-start when I opened it up. Windows Hello worked great and was super quick. My guess is this is a setting in the BIOS, but I do not want a system starting every time I open it. I would like the choice to turn it on. I do not play the support game with Dell on newly purchased systems now and sent it back. The system looks good, the screen looks great but can be a bit too bright, but I wouldn't complain about that as there are times when you want the screen to be bright. It is better to have the option to turn up the brightness than to have a display that is too dim to start with. I did find a lot of color banding and dark color crush while streaming media. I thought this might be the WiFi speed and did the remove Killer app process and increased my WI-Fi speed. The banding still occurred across several streaming services even though my WiFi speed was above 50. The screen response time might be a bit low, accounting for this, but I didn't take the time to do the usual testing and checks to confirm this. Most new systems no matter who the manufacture goes through the update and patch pains, and that seems to be the case here.
I am interested in the XPS 17 and Alienware M15 R3 now that I have sent back the XPS 15. I have waited for almost a year on the updated XPS 15 and SurfaceBook 3 and unfortunately, both are lacking. The SB3 is not enough of an upgrade to purchase, and the XPS 15 seems to be going through update pains.

I had a chance to review both the New Dell XPS 15 2020 and the Dell XPS 15 2019 versions.
My only complaint about the new Dell XPS 15 2020 version is that the keyboard is good, but not as good as the 2019 version. I love the keyboard travel, and the power button feels SOLID on the older version of the XPS.
My two complaints about the older XPS 15 is that it supports only ONE M.2 Slots, and that the speakers are on the downside instead of having top firing speakers like the 2020 version does.
Hey Dell, are you listening ?

WOW that price! I have had nothing but issues with my XPS 9570 battery, charge port issues, and charging brick itself. I could never recommend it to anyone over my Razer Blade. I love my Razer 15 so much that I bought the Razer Blade Stealth (2019 model with RTX 1650) and I got it as an open box on Best Buy in the USA for $800! If you don't mind no touch screen you cannot beat the specs for $800. The secret to cheaper laptops is to buy an open box on Best Buy in the "worst" condition possible - Satisfactory. The thing is, they are brand new! Comes with the packaging 9 out of 10 times despite it saying it doesn't or that it has signs of cosmetic damage. My Blades were pristine and I have bought Apple products as open boxes to the same degree. I originally bought my XPS because I figured it would be a better warranty through Dell and better/easier to obtain customer service but boy was I wrong! Go Razer all the way!

This, for once, is high end Windows laptop done right. It's a real competitor to the Macbook Pro 16. I like how this is built as a high end device from the ground up and isn't a rebranding of a powerful but crappy gaming laptop
It also has gotten so many things right :
    - No numpad
    - Centered trackpad
    - Large trackpad
    - Finally no USB-A port, though I would have preferred a 4th USB-C port compared to the SD card slot.
    - Excellent build quality
    - 16:10 even though 3:2 or 4:3 would have been even better.
The UHD display is a must though. 1920x1200 on my XPS 13 is as low a dpi as I would accept. Then things are too big on the display, even at 100%. Used to use my 12in Macbook at 1920x1200 and it was perfect.
Add to that the fact that you can get it with an international keyboard in France and it's a win.
Its only Windows competitor is the X1 Extreme Gen 2

Hey guys! I am a TH-camr as well and do quite a bit of video editing but I have no idea which specs I need. Here's what I DON'T need. Since I have an external monitor, the size of the laptop screen or it being touchscreen means nothing to me. While very nice, all the premium materials & thinness of the XPS range are also not needed. The laptop also stays in one place so portability is not needed but I don't want a big desktop. I just need a pretty quick laptop that will render my videos as fast as possible. I also would like not to break the bank. Here's what I DO(or think I do)need: I want a Dell. Intel i7 9th or 10th Gen, 16gigs or more of RAM, 512gb Hardrive and not sure if a dedicated graphics card helps in the rendering of videos or if that's for game play on the machine itself of which I do none. Any suggestions?

I appreciate the review, however, this review is not complete without mentioning the hoops and hurdles one must endure, dealing with Dell's customer support. As amazing as the XPS line is, there is value lost in the lack of support at every level at Dell. It can take 10-15 days to get a response to the most simplistic question. A complete review must consider this variable as it contributes directly to the experience of owning a Dell computer. Most users that purchase this level of computer most likely are using it for professional applications. A defective unit combined with massive lead times to correct the problem can be highly problematic in a professional environment. Please consider the quality of customer support in future reviews.

@@nj5709 Yes, it was overheating issue. She wanted processing power to fit ML models, but laptop was getting dangeourosely hot every time she tried to run models. I appreciate your impartial reviews. No Mac loving/PC bashing or vice versa here. Just one thing about OLED. The review made it sound as if Dell chose not to use OLED on the new XPS lineup. I'm assuming you know, but didn't mention that, this is because Dell didn't actually have a choice. No OLED screens exist with the 16:10 aspect ratio, sadly. Perfect timing, thank you sir: that’s what I was looking for. The XPS 15 is superb but the key improvements seem to be reserved for the 17...
Second point, dell price remains too expensive BUT It should drop relatively quickly via discounts. Not so much Apple. I think a dimension of timing needs to be introduced for price as it may change everything. An XPS 15 loaded around £1500 will be an immediate buy for me...
Third, how likely dell can bring AMD Ryzen 4000 to dell XPS. They did it for the G5...
Would that be a game changer ?
Final point I need help to assess. Will the MacBook Pro 16 get an updated processor from Gen 9 to 10 or even to tiger lake...? Been reading q4 possible?
That may also affect the comparison as they don’t really have same gen processor as we speak...

Kubsniped not an expert on dell computer pricing but you can see that Dell does discount product very fast and often....good luck to get 10 percent with Apple...
So based on last generation XPS, it should not be crazy to assume that a £500 drop could be on the table...by end of this year.
Since my post, been researching further and really want Ryzen...or intel tiger...nothing from intel currently seems good enough...far from it...
For what is worth, looking at Lenovo x1 carbon, dell XPS, Apple 16(but updated soon hopefully as was out Nov 19. Choice number one after the recent disappointing 13) or even a quad core MacBook Air !!!

Considering you can get a gaming laptop like the MSI GF65 THIN 9SEXR-250
for roughly $1099 it feels like a much better value compared to something like a Microsoft surface or the Dell XPS. you get a RTX 2060 graphics card with a 120 Hz display. This model only comes with 8 GB of RAM but I think that's easily upgradable. The i7 9750H is a generation old but I think it definitely still holds up in performance. I'm currently using a 8750H laptop which is rather similar in performance. I mean even if you're not a gamer, I feel like the laptop is more future proof with these performance parts installed. I always purchase something I know is going to last for at least 5 years. I don't think it's wise spending to get the latest thing every single year the next generation product releases. With technology something new comes out every year! You just have to know restraint, no matter how badly you may want whatever it is because of the numbers showing way more compared to the previous product. There will always be something better

Still having doubts over the longevity of XPS machines. Dell is known to have shoddy quality assurance, and as a previous owner of a 9560 I've had issues such as backlight bleed (FHD model), coil whining, squeaking hinge, thermal throttling etc. Terrific laptop despite those issues, but I had to get rid of it after 1.5 years. And this year some people are still having issues relating to quality assurance.
