What's the difference between Astartes, Custodes, Primarchs, Ultramarines, and etc. I don't really know much except that the Primarchs are pretty much the highest level/strongest group of people, excluding the Emperor. But the Asterion’s thing cimented that a space marine can be exceptional but he can’t beat a primarch in a 1v1 (the demon primarch lost bc they gained demonic weaknesses)

to be fair Shield-Captain Valerian during the novels seems to either underestimate himself or overestimate his opponent. That being said, Moloc is one hell of a space marine and I do not think even a custodian would take him down easily, although I do think they would in the end.

That’s the best part. He isn’t humbling himself, he specifically says he suffers from neither doubt nor pride. He just looks at this Space Marine outfitted to the nines and goes “ that one’s a toss-up for me.”

Average Custodes fan refusing to admit that anything can even scratch one of their numbers. The reality is that most stories about Custodes involves them dying. Even that story y’all love to reference without having read it, the one with 6 Custodes stopping a splinter fleet, involves them preparing for weeks to still get a 83% casualty rate. You can’t just cherry pick the one or two stories glazing them to hell and back then call bs when most other authors have quite consistent writing on them.

That's kinda a thing I like about 40k, the power scaling fuckery is all over the place so you're never certain what's going to happen. Keeps things fresh. There's guardsmen who have challenged Astartes, Astartes who have challenged Custodes, and people say Valdor could've probably beat some of the primarchs in a duel. And that's just the imperial tiers, but this wide range of skill and capability among supposed equals exists everywhere in the franchise.

Dude murders Marines daily and without effort AND carries shit that no one else save Custodians have. @@SeanCrosserThe biggest advantage that Custodes have on Marines is their better tech, even more so than their superior natural abilities. Moloch (and a lot of Chapter Masters but Moloch even more so) doesn’t have that much disadvantage on that front, making the playing field much more level.
All the theories about Moloc are very intriguing. For those who don't know, it appears that the Chapter master of the Minotaurs has always been Asterion Moloc, surviving things that would have killed any other astartes. So, it is unknown if Asterion Moloc is the same marine surviving through millennia of conflicts, simply a name that the chapter master take every time a new one is elected or something more sinister, akin to the Armor possession of the Phoenix Lords of the Eldari, as in, Asterion Moloc is the armor, taking over its wielder.
Not feeling certainty is definitely a sign of strength. It's the mark of a veteran with experience to recognize thay being rocked is a possibility, and you're stronger from that knowledge.

I think it would be pretty cool for it to turn out he is a " perfect " Thunder Warrior. Being that they we're able to hold there own for a time against the Astartes and Custodes after they were betrayed.
The context of a perfect Thunder Warrior existing would make the Emperor’s disposal of them all the more tragic. If only he had given them more time to grow.

My personal headcanon - Molac is actually a Thunder Warrior whose genetic flaws were stabilized and even rectified, resulting in one of the few beings capable of beating Custodes in a 1v1. There's a reason why it took the Custodes AND 1st legion to purge them. Ignoring the fact that the Primarchs were given that title to pay homage to the RANK of Primarch that the Thunder Warriors used in place of "general"
It took Custodes AND the First Legion because at that time the Thunder Warriors had greater numbers and were all blooded veterans with unstable temperament. Custodes were genetically superior, with greater arms and armour, but fewer numbers.
That's pretty much the story of Arik Taranis, who was a thunder warrior looking for ways to stabilize himself by incorporating some more advanced biotech used to create space marines in The Outcast Dead
@@dirtyblonde1011 Ohm.. TW-s sprinted at the Custode line? And they have many charges in battles? They also leap in those armors. One TW run for days after the purge. They can definitely run, sprint and even leap. Or so they wouldn't have been such a big threat to both the Astarte as it happened during their later revolution at Cerberus, or the Custode. TW-s were much much stronger and faster than the Astarte. They didn't need their armor to be powered. They were the maximum. They were very close to the Custode strength, even if their gear wasn't so good, or their genes weren't that stable. Also, I don't think that power armor had anything to do with the terminator sets. Those come from a separate STC or such. There is also a great scene of them charging in the Last Church on Terra.
@@Kareszkoma One of the Heresy rulebooks have some World Eaters take on some very unstable Thunder Warriors who made it off Terra. It's pointed out that around each fallen Thunder Warrior is at least 5 World Eaters.

Sometimes I worry about making my homebrew chapter master too much of a Mary-Sue, then I remember that characters like Moloc and Tyberos canonically exist and I feel better about myself

Tyberos is just another "Large Chapter Master", like Marneus Calgar. Moloc and the Minotaurs are Mary Sues. "My chapter is the personal force of the High Lords Of Terra, they all have the coolest, most ancient armour, the First Company all have Terminator armour, and and not just Indomitus, but Tartaros Pattern, even this cool ancient Arkonak pattern that no one else knows about! And the Chapter Master has a spear and shield like the Hoplites, but they're ANCIENT and the spear SHOOTS LASERS and the shield is huge and blocks all attacks, and the Chapter Master is this cool mysterious guy who is quiet and only says a few words, and he has also been the Chapter Master for thousands of years, and survived all these seeming deaths." Their "downside" is that they die a lot. "Wow, so like Lamenters?" you might ask? Nope. They deploy the entire chapter, or multiple companies worth of units, die a lot, accomplish the goal, and somehow just replenish their numbers just like that. They're never under equipped, never undermanned, never on the back foot.
Tyberos approaches from behind, the custodes, moving with great speed yet making no sound... Custodes talking over his shoulder at the approaching behemoth without turning: "Sorry bud, they are all already dead. No blood bath for ya today. Unless you wana play in the mud with their corpses."
The power level of the Custodes is as interchangeable as the authors themselves. In one story; no possible way for a Custodes to even be approached by an Astartes, of any level, because this is how high their martial skill is. In another: I think I just shat my pants a little.
I agree with your frustration but this guy wasnt scared at all. He just said it would be an concerninly even match, and moloch is implied to be something _else_ pasing as an astartes.
If you haven't picked up the Custodian books (or listened to the audiobook) I highly recommend it. The three-way story that culminates in The Emperor's Legion (the 1st Watchers book) is fantastic.
Too be fair, Shield Captain Valerian was considered to be mainly a scholar, and he and his brothers had just cut their way through a ton of minotaurs, but I also think that he was underestimating himself, considering his earlier feats.
To be precise it was only a basic squad and they lost some custodians also in the process, actually pulled apart by 2 minotuars which is rather crazy a feat.

I think the scaling makes sense _if_ you enter from the standpoint that the Minotaurs are the direct lap-dogs of the High Lords of Terra, directly funnelled extra resources purely for the sake of being able to smake down anything that said High Lords view as a threat. I wouldn't be surprised if their chapter master _routinely dies_ (as opposed to the rumored "never dies"), and just gets replaced through various Heretek methods so that he _seems_ unbeatable when really he's probably some off-brand hybrid of Astartes and Thunder Warrior or some other such muckery. Tl;dr: The Minotaurs are probably just the High Lords of Terra's pay-to-win SM chapter.
Little Kitten would best him, but probably do so by befriending him. I am not disrespecting the Captain General, but I feel Little Kitten's good nature and capacity for kindness would act as a passive rebuff halting the fight.
Important to note that Valerian charged a very powerful Bloodthirster without consideration and won (with help tbh). Point being, he ain’t no coward making excuses,
The fandom all say that this custodes got scare , but i say that the custodes assessment of how the fight would go out between them is uncertain , not that he scare as hell sure he would still fight him and likely win but it would be are bloody fight
Some people hype up custodes too much, and in retaliation, some people need the custodes to be humbled by space marines. It's stupid power-level playground arguments, and Asterion Moloc and the Minotaurs is the Calvinball. And like, I'm fine if it's a Custodes who got impressed by an Astartes, like that can show how the Astartes are still humanity's defenders and can rise to the challenge of a Custodes, if maybe not beat it.
I love reading the times the Minotaurs got their faces smashed in and the only reason they didn't get wiped out is due to the High Lords of Terra BEGGING a chapter to let them survive. The Minotaurs refuse to ever stand in front of a Space Wolf, Black Templar, Salamander, or White Scar. Three of those chapters nearly wiped them out entirely on separate occasions, the Wolves outright scare them due to all the 'executioner' stories. Minotaurs to not fare well in the Deathwatch either. Every Minotaur sent to the Deathwatch NEVER return to their chapter after being humbled multiple times and learning to do things a different way. They also refuse to travel through Ultramarine space unless absolutely necessary due to the Ultramarines humbling them multiple times for trying to 'acquisition' things from Ultramarine worlds. The Minotaurs are a chapter that highlights corruption from on high.

I'm sure the Custodian could kill Molac. Would it be easy? No. Would he get off without a scratch? Doubtful. But could he? With enough planning and effort, yes.
The Watchers of The Throne mini series was excellent in many ways. It showed the idiotic bureaucracy of the Imperium during a time of great crisis (Fall of Cada), the inner working of Custodians during daily operations, politics and when defending the palace. But to me it put a spotlight on something we all thought one way or another: Are the Custodians getting soft after all this time? The book answers that questions in spades and its awesome! Yes, they were laxed in standard routine but the golden fire is still there within them, it just needed to be roused to the forefront. Think about it for a moment, what Great Crusade level Custodian Shield Captain would second guess if they could mop the floor with a standard SM?? He'd back hand him then be back in orbit in time for lunch.

@@akirafan28: Good chance of it, though my money is that Moloch is just a cover story to hide that the chapter master isn't as durable as is claimed. The High Lords of Terra appear to be using the Minotaurs as their direct pay-to-win chapter, so there's a very good chance that they're putting in the resources to keep replacement Molochs available in case of the inevitable.
Its wild when you remember that what a space marine is to a human, a custodian is to a space marine. This is the equivalent of a regular human having such an aura of menace that the space marine opposite of him loses all confidence in his abilities to turn that man into a red smear.
Which isn’t even that rare. Yarrick, Cain, that one type of OG tempestus Scions (can’t remember the name) multiple Inquisitors and just about any Imperial Assassin (although calling them human is definitely a stretch) have all either defeated or shown abilities to defeat marines with varying degrees of difficulty. Which makes it even funnier when Custodes fan complain about lore assassination every time a situation like this happens.

The more you crank up the overall number, the more exceptional people you'll end up with too. Thats how ratios work. And that doesn't make it any less rare, but it also doesn't make any of those instances less impressive either.

When I say "it’s not that rare" I’m talking as far as Warhammer literature goes, it’s not that rare, because this kind of people are the ones worthy of writing stories about, not that it’s not extremely rare in-universe.
Do keep in mind that Moloc has been theorized to either be a custodian or something resembling Leetu(the guy that was something inbetween and Custodian and an Astartes), maybe even Leetu himself

Knowing this: That Moloc gave Custodian Captains PTSD from the mere sight of him... ... You have to acknowledge how TERRIFYING Kutlakh, the Necron Overlord who had Moloc helpless against him even while wounded, truly is
Very strange inner monologue. "I've beaten dudes who could have def beaten me." Suggests he probably wasn't sure then either. So Moloc would not be different from those scenarios of equal uncertainty. This is a huge wank moment for whatever writer wanted to chuff up Moloc.
So even Custodes have moments of doubt. That’s quite heartwarming. Usually they act as if they’re the end all be all. And that’s supposedly without a shred of pride.
I don’t know if they’ve ever met but I’d love to see a custodian react to Tyberos. I assume it would be some kind of utter confusion as to what exactly the *thing* in front of them is.

That speaks volumes on how much of a menace Moloc could be. Custodians are absolute monsters, proficient in all forms of combat. To think that a SHIELD CAPTAIN. Was worried that he wouldn't be able to beat him is chilling.
Asterion Moloch, whose name has extreme meaning for both Emperor and Imperium - in both words. I've always seen him as Valdor taking direct action in the galaxy - when he isn't in his own little bubble universe. The comment of Valoris about Asterion's spear all but drives that idea home.
Gotta love it when writers forget what Custodes are. A Custodes to a Space Marine is the same as a Space Marine to a Guardsman. A blur of deadly perfection. Even a Primaris is nothing compared to a Custodes, and Moloc is Firstborn.

His capabilities are not the same as you would expect, which has led to rampant speculation about whether he is actually a space marine at all. The Minotaurs are less of a space marine chapter and more like the High Lord's personal army, they get all sorts of crazy gear, are always deployed in large numbers (sometimes the entire chapter in one place). To say that the Minotaurs or their chapter master is "a space marine" is like saying that Constantine Valdor is "a custodes"
Gotta love it when Custodes fan say this exact quote forgetting that a lot of mortals have shown that they are capable of defeating Marines in combat. Like seriously, if any Imperial Assassin (who are stated to be the peak of what mortals can achieve) can treat Astartes like they’re PDF then the idea of Peak Astartes defeating Custodes shouldn’t be that much of a crime.
@@SeanCrosser Minotaurs being funded by High Lords means nothing in the face of Custodes being made of the Emperor and provided with the greatest tech that is possible in the setting. Custodes predate Thunder Warriors. They are the handcrafted artisan version of the mass produced Astartes. It’s a completely different level. To put it into perspective, Custodes were made to be perfect while Astartes have gone through three different versions just to remain below Custodes. And this dude is from the second version. The weakest version.

I think people are blowing this out of proportions. It doesn't read so much as "I'll lose" to "It'll be a tough fight." Which isn't necessarily a unique thing. There are undoubtedly more than a few Astartes that can give a Custodes a run for their money if not beat them. Moloc just so happens to be the special butt boy for the High Lords, even going so far as to attain Primaris Marines before most Chapters are aware of them, let alone receive them.
This is something I really wish the people who ride custodians would understand. Yes your standard custodian can cut through a squad of marines with little trouble. But there ARE marines who can beat custodians 1v1.

The reality is that most stories about Custodes involves them dying. Even that story y’all love to reference without having read it, the one with 6 Custodes stopping a splinter fleet, involves them preparing for weeks to still get a 83% casualty rate. You can’t just cherry pick the one or two stories glazing them to hell and back then call bs when most other authors have quite consistent writing on them.

That's kinda a thing I like about 40k, the power scaling fuckery is all over the place so you're never certain what's going to happen. Keeps things fresh. There's guardsmen who have challenged Astartes, Astartes who have challenged Custodes, and people say Valdor could've probably beat some of the primarchs in a duel. And that's just the imperial tiers, but this wide range of skill and capability among supposed equals exists everywhere in the franchise.

@@SeanCrosserThe biggest advantage that Custodes have on Marines is their better tech, even more so than their superior natural abilities. Moloch (and a lot of Chapter Masters but Moloch even more so) doesn’t have that much disadvantage on that front, making the playing field much more level.
All the theories about Moloc are very intriguing. For those who don't know, it appears that the Chapter master of the Minotaurs has always been Asterion Moloc, surviving things that would have killed any other astartes. So, it is unknown if Asterion Moloc is the same marine surviving through millennia of conflicts, simply a name that the chapter master take every time a new one is elected or something more sinister, akin to the Armor possession of the Phoenix Lords of the Eldari, as in, Asterion Moloc is the armor, taking over its wielder.
This is what I think as well. Either that or some type of hybrid stabilized thunder warrior/astartes. A one-off kinda thing like Alpha Primus

My personal headcanon - Molac is actually a Thunder Warrior whose genetic flaws were stabilized and even rectified, resulting in one of the few beings capable of beating Custodes in a 1v1.
There's a reason why it took the Custodes AND 1st legion to purge them. Ignoring the fact that the Primarchs were given that title to pay homage to the RANK of Primarch that the Thunder Warriors used in place of "general"

It took Custodes AND the First Legion because at that time the Thunder Warriors had greater numbers and were all blooded veterans with unstable temperament. Custodes were genetically superior, with greater arms and armour, but fewer numbers.
That's pretty much the story of Arik Taranis, who was a thunder warrior looking for ways to stabilize himself by incorporating some more advanced biotech used to create space marines in The Outcast Dead

They can definitely run, sprint and even leap. Or so they wouldn't have been such a big threat to both the Astarte as it happened during their later revolution at Cerberus, or the Custode.
TW-s were much much stronger and faster than the Astarte. They didn't need their armor to be powered. They were the maximum. They were very close to the Custode strength, even if their gear wasn't so good, or their genes weren't that stable. Also, I don't think that power armor had anything to do with the terminator sets. Those come from a separate STC or such.
There is also a great scene of them charging in the Last Church on Terra.
@@Kareszkoma One of the Heresy rulebooks have some World Eaters take on some very unstable Thunder Warriors who made it off Terra. It's pointed out that around each fallen Thunder Warrior is at least 5 World Eaters.

Their "downside" is that they die a lot. "Wow, so like Lamenters?" you might ask? Nope. They deploy the entire chapter, or multiple companies worth of units, die a lot, accomplish the goal, and somehow just replenish their numbers just like that. They're never under equipped, never undermanned, never on the back foot.

The power level of the Custodes is as interchangeable as the authors themselves.
In one story; no possible way for a Custodes to even be approached by an Astartes, of any level, because this is how high their martial skill is.

So, like every faction in 40k. It is frustrating how much power level varies by author, I guess it's to be expected but it is annoying.

If you haven't picked up the Custodian books (or listened to the audiobook) I highly recommend it. The three-way story that culminates in The Emperor's Legion (the 1st Watchers book) is fantastic.
Too be fair, Shield Captain Valerian was considered to be mainly a scholar, and he and his brothers had just cut their way through a ton of minotaurs, but I also think that he was underestimating himself, considering his earlier feats.
To be precise it was only a basic squad and they lost some custodians also in the process, actually pulled apart by 2 minotuars which is rather crazy a feat.

I think the scaling makes sense _if_ you enter from the standpoint that the Minotaurs are the direct lap-dogs of the High Lords of Terra, directly funnelled extra resources purely for the sake of being able to smake down anything that said High Lords view as a threat. I wouldn't be surprised if their chapter master _routinely dies_ (as opposed to the rumored "never dies"), and just gets replaced through various Heretek methods so that he _seems_ unbeatable when really he's probably some off-brand hybrid of Astartes and Thunder Warrior or some other such muckery.
Tl;dr: The Minotaurs are probably just the High Lords of Terra's pay-to-win SM chapter.

Some people hype up custodes too much, and in retaliation, some people need the custodes to be humbled by space marines. It's stupid power-level playground arguments, and Asterion Moloc and the Minotaurs is the Calvinball.
And like, I'm fine if it's a Custodes who got impressed by an Astartes, like that can show how the Astartes are still humanity's defenders and can rise to the challenge of a Custodes, if maybe not beat it.

I love reading the times the Minotaurs got their faces smashed in and the only reason they didn't get wiped out is due to the High Lords of Terra BEGGING a chapter to let them survive.
The Minotaurs refuse to ever stand in front of a Space Wolf, Black Templar, Salamander, or White Scar. Three of those chapters nearly wiped them out entirely on separate occasions, the Wolves outright scare them due to all the 'executioner' stories. Minotaurs to not fare well in the Deathwatch either. Every Minotaur sent to the Deathwatch NEVER return to their chapter after being humbled multiple times and learning to do things a different way. They also refuse to travel through Ultramarine space unless absolutely necessary due to the Ultramarines humbling them multiple times for trying to 'acquisition' things from Ultramarine worlds.
The Minotaurs are a chapter that highlights corruption from on high.

I'm sure the Custodian could kill Molac. Would it be easy? No. Would he get off without a scratch? Doubtful. But could he? With enough planning and effort, yes.
For reference, an average custodian would tear through ten average space marines like nothing.
The Watchers of The Throne mini series was excellent in many ways. It showed the idiotic bureaucracy of the Imperium during a time of great crisis (Fall of Cada), the inner working of Custodians during daily operations, politics and when defending the palace. But to me it put a spotlight on something we all thought one way or another: Are the Custodians getting soft after all this time? The book answers that questions in spades and its awesome! Yes, they were laxed in standard routine but the golden fire is still there within them, it just needed to be roused to the forefront. Think about it for a moment, what Great Crusade level Custodian Shield Captain would second guess if they could mop the floor with a standard SM?? He'd back hand him then be back in orbit in time for lunch.

@@akirafan28: Good chance of it, though my money is that Moloch is just a cover story to hide that the chapter master isn't as durable as is claimed. The High Lords of Terra appear to be using the Minotaurs as their direct pay-to-win chapter, so there's a very good chance that they're putting in the resources to keep replacement Molochs available in case of the inevitable.
Its wild when you remember that what a space marine is to a human, a custodian is to a space marine. This is the equivalent of a regular human having such an aura of menace that the space marine opposite of him loses all confidence in his abilities to turn that man into a red smear.
Which isn’t even that rare. Yarrick, Cain, that one type of OG tempestus Scions (can’t remember the name) multiple Inquisitors and just about any Imperial Assassin (although calling them human is definitely a stretch) have all either defeated or shown abilities to defeat marines with varying degrees of difficulty. Which makes it even funnier when Custodes fan complain about lore assassination every time a situation like this happens.

The more you crank up the overall number, the more exceptional people you'll end up with too. Thats how ratios work. And that doesn't make it any less rare, but it also doesn't make any of those instances less impressive either.

Asterion Moloch, whose name has extreme meaning for both Emperor and Imperium - in both words. I've always seen him as Valdor taking direct action in the galaxy - when he isn't in his own little bubble universe. The comment of Valoris about Asterion's spear all but drives that idea home.

Gotta love it when writers forget what Custodes are. A Custodes to a Space Marine is the same as a Space Marine to a Guardsman. A blur of deadly perfection. Even a Primaris is nothing compared to a Custodes, and Moloc is Firstborn.

Custodes predate Thunder Warriors. They are the handcrafted artisan version of the mass produced Astartes. It’s a completely different level. To put it into perspective, Custodes were made to be perfect while Astartes have gone through three different versions just to remain below Custodes. And this dude is from the second version. The weakest version.

I think people are blowing this out of proportions. It doesn't read so much as "I'll lose" to "It'll be a tough fight."
Which isn't necessarily a unique thing. There are undoubtedly more than a few Astartes that can give a Custodes a run for their money if not beat them.
Moloc just so happens to be the special butt boy for the High Lords, even going so far as to attain Primaris Marines before most Chapters are aware of them, let alone receive them.

This is something I really wish the people who ride custodians would understand. Yes your standard custodian can cut through a squad of marines with little trouble. But there ARE marines who can beat custodians 1v1.
