As always, brilliant video absolutely love the content these people put out. I've been a long time diorama builder and the 3 small bits of advice that helped me the most were:
    1. Have some verticality in your project, a smaller base with something vertical grabs the eye
    2. Have the project on an angle so if its a squared off base, have the mini on an angle not facing a flat side
    3. Its a snap shot in time so if you're able have the mini in an unnatural pose such as Lucas fabulous mini jumping over the rocks

For adding a fleshy/gory/gross organic texture to a base for cheap an easy way to do so is as follows:
    1. Cover the desired area in PVA glue
    2. Whilst the PVA is still wet add some drops of super glue into it.
    3. Wait like five to ten seconds as the super glue will begin to dry whilst the PVA is still wet.
    4. With a cocktail stick, texture spreader or the back of a old brush gently twist, nudge or otherwise shape the dried/drying super glue areas to your desired shape.
    6. When your happy leave the PVA to dry fully.
    7. With appropriately coloured translucent paint/s (contrast/speed paint, thinned acrylic, glazes, etc) paint over the area. Following which you can then layer/highlight/etc to your preference.
    8. To make the area look wet, slimy, etc add a gloss varnish like ard coat over the area as a final touch.
Some potential paint suggestions for different effects are:
    - Raw/soft flesh: a dark pink like Speed Paint Purple Alchemy is ideal.
    - Blood/gore: a dark red like Speed Paint Slaughter Red or Citadel Flesh Tearers works well
    - Toxic sludge/nurgley effects: a pale sickly yellow/green like Citadel Plaguebearer Flesh is what I'd probably go for.

9:09 I would also add aquarium gravel/small rocks. Not heavy, you get em in big bags where you're sure to find the kind you're looking for. Though these are smaller than the rocks you were talking about.

Always enjoy a long ass video on improving bases lol. Bases really can sell a model and the overall completion of a miniature or model piece. Who better than the Squidmar team to teach me more haha. Also quick tip on free basing material, go to your local hardware store that sellls garden supplies and ask for free samples of sand and bark. Usually there is a bag open for customers to see them and compare

Also, cut the tufts into smaller bits and put them directly into the texture paste while it dries, so it looks like it is in the actual sand/ground. Also, owning a chinchilla provides great super fine dirt-sand, since they bathe in it.

Hi, I like to add 1 product: Structure paint, cheap white structure paint in a 5 litre pot. That's my primary way to cover a base, poor stones and sand or other stuff over the wet structure paint. Let dry and do paint, washes etc.
I used to sell pre-mixed pots of coloured structure paint for wargamers many years ago.

Emil, you can't polish a turd, BUT, you can roll it in glitter 😉
Also, one trick we found when doing my wife's army was that once she had decided on a scheme for the whole army, we mixed up a big tub of the primary colour, about 300ml, from cheap acrylics. That way you've got enough to do hundreds of models without ever having to try to colour match each time you do a new unit. 👍

A good way to get some good ground cover and in scale rock is to acquire it the same as Squidmar (real rocks). However, you throw these rocks into a mortar and pestle. A very cheap tool which will help you smash up rocks into very, very small scales and leave you with powders and sand scale pieces. You combine this with a good texture paste and going back and forth with all the tips in this video and you'll have correct scale rocks. You'll also have perfect "sprinkle" pieces of various sizes for the gaps and silhouette requirements for your composition. Highly suggest trying it.

    Hey Squidmar/Emil.
First, awesome video, took some notes and can't wait to put them on practice. Got a couple of questions:
    A) Mini is already painted and glued to the base because nobody teached you about basing 6 years ago, do you recommend to de-glue the mini and work on the base, or add the details around? (Pretty much that happened on all of the Chaos Dark Vengeance minis)
    B) Got a couple of Wardogs that I'm painting separate from the bases, the plan is to add rumble and write on cursive the names of the pilots on the upper plates of Rhinos, as well got some rocks and crystals that loved how they look, should I glue them, and add masking for protecting them before primer?
    C) Texture paint goes before or after the primer?
