    Now that's what we call an honest review ❤ Thar is indeed a capable vehicle but extensive automation makes things troublesome sometimes and that's the reason, manual diff locking is crucial for intense offroaders like Thar. Although I support Gurkha Lil more than Thar in terms of offroaders but Thar brings all-new driving experience and is called a one-stop-shop for all your driving needs.

    That the Thar is a very refined and capable vehicle i have no doubt about. You have driven "Bulldozer" everywhere from highways to deep snow of Ladakh and deep sand of Rajasthan as well. I agree with you that both the Thar and Gurkha are very capable offroaders. Its the extreme 10% condition where manual Diff Locks front and rear gives the Gurkha an edge. Other than that the Gurkha also has a more spacious cabin with a metal hardtop. Good room for 4 passengers to sit comfortably. Very good suspension that soaks up bad roads. I have found the 90 bhp engine and gearing to be quite good in city and highway drives both. The interiors are also very well put together and quality of plastics used are also quite acceptable. The Thar is a more refined product with a more powerful engine and better highway driveability combined with options of petrol, diesel, manual or automatic. I have driven my Gurkha about 1500 kms only so far but am very happy with my "Asterix" - an unbiased 2021 Gurkha Owner.

      Well Exactly , if you see it just ends up on personal choice , both are no non sense vehicles if you are ready to sacrifice a more better interior and feel for those extra diff locks , metal top etc. it's good to go you have your choice and it goes vice versa 😉

      Read your review about the Gurkha in Team BHP. Took a test drive of the Gurkha. Found it to be livable in highways and awesome in the hills/ruts. But, I shall wait for the 5 door version provided the pricing is kept logical.

    It all comes to a vehicle's actual performance. I own a 4wd Gurkha Xplorer 5 door, 2018 model and upto the present moment, I have never had any problems with it. Of course, specifications wise, it doesn't seems much, compared to more powerful 4x4s currently in the market. But when it comes to the Gurkha's intended usage (broken roads, extreme off roading, deep slush in unpaved village roads etc), the Gurkha is indeed a shining beacon.
    Before the Gurkha, I owned a Mahindra Marshal Deluxe 2002 model with in-line injector fuel pump. Even with this vehicle, if we go by the manufacturer's specifications, it doesn't seem much. But at off roading, the Marshal dulls out what other modern swanky 4x4s boasts about. Once, I rescued a 4wd Scorpio stuck in deep slush...the same slush where the Marshal easily made across. Another instance, we were going up a muddy and very steep incline. Older models Mahindra jeeps including the Marshal, made it to the top easily. Sadly for a 4wd Fortuner and a 4wd Tata Safari, they could not make it to the top on their own.
    So never get enticed into buying a car with juicy, lip-smacking, specifications.
    Before you invest your hard earned money on a car, be extremely focused on your driving and commuting needs. Do extensive reading on the car's performance, cargo space, especially its mechanicals and bound to crop up glitches here and there. Get genuine feedbacks from owners, rather than regret later at buying a particular car.

    honestly i had no idea that India also has deserts like these... I always had the concept of those initial beer bottle and liquor carton polluted deserts. And when you live in cities, Gurkha is a bit unfit for your daily commute - Thar however steal the show here. Otherwise Gurkha is a serious offroader than Thar. I will prefer Gurkha if i am living in Manali and I will certainly prefer Thar if i am living in Gurugram. 😀

      What about Gurkha in Gurgaon? I live in 37D and the entire road condition from hero honda Chawk to end of 37D and surrounding are totally broken. Also Gurgaon is full of rowdy bullying drivers and extremely horrible roads except NH8 and Golf course road, Pahari road.
      What do you suggest? I currently drive Petrol swift 2016 model...and it almost cries while driving me on these broken roads, monster potholes and craters, mountain type speed breakers.

      You are just looking at the bad roads, while forgetting the easy handling of an hatchback. While Thar is cumbersome to drive compared to Swift, Gurkha is further cumbersome if the value of its pros can't overshadow the hectic nature of its daily usage. Take test drives and try to weigh these points in your mind.

      @@DCVExpeditions yes, I fully understand the driving comfort/ road manners aspect of Gutkha vis-a-vis a comfy hatchback like swift. The way swift crawls up the hill road inclines without subjecting the driver and passenger to any serious body roll is remarkable. Also, driving a large dimension and heavy car in day to day city life for not so professional driver like me would be undoubtedly difficult.
      I have only one parking space in the society. Gurkha can only be thought of as second car. However, money is another constraint. I do not even take out my Swift everyday due to work from home. And have other priorities than spending money on a second car of lifestyle segment. Perhaps Gurkha/ Thar have to wait. And I need a reliable AT for my next purchase. Knee problems are turning serious to severe.

      Due to some reasons I had to sell my i-10 and forced to commute 2x70 km every day in dusty highways of Gujarat in my BS-4 Gurkha Explorer (3 door). After initial hiccups I am amazed by my beast's performance in this urban scenario.
      Mileage is at all times high, higher than the factory declared 10.
      Cruising at 100 km/hr with this heavy monster has some advantages - other vehicles keep safe distance from me.
      High driver's position gives advantage in selecting smoother traffic lanes.
      The suspensions are superb - also hi profile tyre helps in this regard.
      Yes the gears are clumsy, clutch is deep, body roll during sharp turns tend to split your gut out. With slightest fall in quality of diesel it starts to misfire. No LCD, no airbags only AC and yes the legendary mechanical differential locks. (Once I used the front diff locks to lift my vehicle out of an open manhole.)
      Gurkha is very temperamental machine - mastering it requires loads of patience, passion and strong knees. But once you master it, you become the king of road. Jai hind...

    We should be glad that there is a healthy competition between the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha because in the end they will be compelled to keep improving their cars and give their best. So we customers win in the end getting a good car. Moreover both the companies being an Indian company is icing on the cake. For those itching to comment “it’s a Mercedes engine in the Force Gurkha so it’s not Indian”, take a chill pill. Everyone wins.

    Force themselfed degraded New Gurkha... It was supposed to be come with OM616 a 2.2ltr mill with that it would have been a true upgrade. But they rather choose to stick with older 2.6ltr and have Thar the edge over it .... However time for Gurkha will come come it'll don the olive green colour in some time

      We should always give credit when its due. THAR is a very good vehicle now but Gurkha rather than fighting for same things ups the game in offroad hardware while its way more truck like than Thar which keeps the numbers away from it. While some people may argue about one being niche due to low numbers but companies need numbers to keep developing the product to up the game.
