1982 Plymouth Reliant REVIVAL Part 1 - 29 years dormant, will it run?

  • On Thursday, I procured a (surprisingly clean) K-car for just $300 in an unknown condition. All I knew was low mileage and needs tires. Come with me on my new adventure of getting it running before the HOA puts a lean on my house!
    Spoilers: Needs ignition parts, absolutely no spark at all. I will be acquiring ignition parts for this car soon. In the meantime, I plan to pressure wash the engine bay and potentially the body of the car if it doesn't shred the paint off immediately. I would also like to generally clean the interior a bit to make the car more pleasant to look at and work on. I might make a video out of this as well, we will see.

    I bought an 87 Reliant here in CA a few weeks ago for $500 with 60k miles, same red interior and immaculate condition inside. The paint is another story... I was told it needed a head gasket, and that the cooling fan didn't work. I checked the compression and all 4 Cylinders were 110-120lbs with no leaks. I opened the set screw on the top radiator line and put new coolant in, gapped the spark plugs and cleaned up the terminals on the fan relay. I started it and it runs like a dream! Next I gotta tackle the A/C, paint it, and get some bigger rims and tires.

      Why rims and tires? I wound up giving this car away. It was too much trouble for what it was.

    Damn 46k that’s really good. That red interior is fire

      It's not bad at all for the years it's spent outside. I think the red is a bit gaudy but it's in good shape at least.

    Easy way to chase down a power draw is to unhook the neg batt terminal and hook a test light between the neg batt post and the neg cable. The test light will light up. Now start pulling fuses from the fuse box until the test light goes out. That circuit is where the draw is.

      I'm aware. This car actually didn't have a draw, but it's gone anyways.

    I still have my 1984 Plymouth Reliant…needs some TLC but has a new engine and carburetor which helps.

    • @AiOinc1
      @AiOinc1  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nice. If carbs weren't so expensive, I might get one for this, but it does not seem to need it. I actually gave this car away to a friend.

      @@AiOinc1 You’re correct about that; I bought mine from JC Whitney over 20 years ago and as I recall, it was around $300. Not sure what they cost these days.

      @@andrewps84I'm not sure. When I first got the car running I had looked and seen about 400 bucks, which was more than I paid for the entire car.

      @@AiOinc1 I probably wouldn’t have invested that much into my Reliant, but I bought the car in memory of my dad who passed away two weeks before I bought it; it was a carbon copy of the car he owned for 11 years and his car was almost mine but I didn’t have a license yet and he needed the money. I won’t get rid of it either because my friend told me he would kill me if I ever did.

    My auto shop teacher in high school in the early 2000s had an identical car, I think it was even the same year and colour, (his ex-wife now) kept on smashing up nice cars, so he got her a beater, she was an absolute beautiful blonde, old enough to be my mother at the time, but she definitely knew how to get out of accidents.
    I live in the Great White North so rust definitely took away a lot of these cars.

    • @AiOinc1
      @AiOinc1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny stuff, I think most of these cars went away due to other reliability concerns and the absolutely unmatched hideous quality of the interior. Any minor drivability problem would probably enough to send it off a cliff for most "normal" people.

    👌 Wow I haven't seen one of these in a long time , great job ! I have a soft spot for these oldies we don't see too much of any more. I got my drivers license in one of these K cars.

      There's a reason you don't see them anymore, they weren't good cars. You probably won't even see this one anymore. I gave it away.

    I love it. I have a 89 reliant that doesn’t have spark. I’ve changed the pick up sensor , asd relay. Starter relay , coil , cap and rotor with wires and still no spark. Can you help

      Do you have signal from the pickup to the ECM?

    I'm amazed how that isn't all rusted out being how old it is, in my area everything literally turns to rust after about 15 years sadly because of all the salt they put on the roads during winter. Looks to have a very nice body, just extremely dirty since it has been neglected and sitting for so long.

    • @AiOinc1
      @AiOinc1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, not much rust gets to anything down here. Roads have never seen salt down here.

    These K cars are getting popular with teens and the young 20's something as cheap JDM style builds and they don;t even care if it's a 4 door.

      No, it's about 700 miles south of there. It was originally sold here and all of the owners were pretty local
