  • In this video I will review the Altec Lansing 221 speakers. I've had these speakers for 18 years and they are still going strong! They were not sitting in storage, these speakers have been a core part of my setup for all those years. I can for sure say that I got my money's worth with these speakers and they will definitely still keep going. As always stay safe everyone!

The Altec Lansing 221’s are embodied in a matted finish of black and grey metal. They feel as light as aluminum but seem to be more impervious to scratches, which even modern-day cell phones have difficulty in preventing. I have lost count how many times I have dropped these speakers however it shows little signs that I did so. I have a couple of gashes on them but considering that these have been with me through maybe 5 to 6 gaming rigs, moving in and out of rooms over the years, and yet still just harbor these minor scuffs and smudges of dirt, I am going to conclude that that is an amazingly sturdy.
A matted metal frame combined with the short cube design makes for a timeless minimalist design before minimalism was even a thing. Nowadays we just have too much stuff on our desks, and the dream goal is to get things down to the least obtrusive without sacrificing functionality. One thing which never occurred to me was how handy it is to have short speakers. If they were any higher, like the other Altec Lansings I own, their sound would be partially muffled due to the height of the monitors. It is true that I can bring up and down the height of my current MSI, however the height of the monitor is determined not by if it blocks your speakers but rather if your eyes are facing the top of the screen when you are sitting up straight.
I am not an audiophile. So I am not an expert on if the speakers sound as they should in a music studio. What I can say is that I didn’t change entire gaming rigs over 18 years to just get subpar machine gun fire, half baked explosions, or get unlife like screams. No, these guys have given me the most enriching sound experience I could ever have wanted with the added benefit of me not having the need to spend money on one less thing.
These speakers boomed Warcraft 3 clashes, flak cannons from Free Space 2, and countless crispy gun fire stemming from Half Life 2, Battlefield 1942, which by the way will always be close to my heart, and every battlefield game which came afterwards.
In short, there might be better speakers out there but at no point was I ever taken out of the immersion of the game due to the sound. In fact, it was most probably the great sounds from the speakers which encouraged me over the years not to upgrade my gaming pc for a little longer. If my current gaming PC at the time couldn’t make it look pretty, at the very least the games sounded amazing.

Hardware Sugar is a boutique computer store in Makati. We focus on having cool parts for cool people. Since we’re always playing around with tech in the shop we decided why not film some of the components we have.So that led to unboxings, reviews and just general tips on building, maintaining a computer. Occasionally that also means dipping into cellphone reviews, investment options, car reviews, vlogs on how it’s like to run a PC shop. We don’t know everything but we try to share what we do know in a way which is easy to understand for PC newbies.

Pretty much the same at work but it was a Harmon Kardon HK395 that was sitting in the corner of the training room while a crappy USB Cyber Acoustic soundbar was being used on the training computer. I was told the speakers didn't work, found out it was simply replacing the aux cable and it was back in business. I put it in the break room instead and it kicks A$$. It looks dated, the fabric slightly dusty/faded, but wow the sound. I've heard a ton of computer speakers including the HK soundsticks, these things beat out pretty much anything you can find retail SQ wise, just not SPL wise. Highly recommended for those who do craigslist, ebay, or fb market.

I also own this for 17 years! My cousin gave this to my father in 2005 to replace the older 2.0 speakers used in our household computer. We used it until 2017.
Now, I'm using it for my personal setup.

My Altec Lansing VS4621, which was given to me by my tito, is still alive and kicking even after more than 10 years since he bought it. The bass & treble in this is adjustable, I can make it powerful and punchy or flat and subtle at any time, while the sound clarity is still on par with newer ones even today. It has since lived in my desk as my primary speaker after its life as a TV sound system. I'm holding on to this until its very last breath.

I can honestly say the same for my Creative Labs Inspire G380 which has been with my family for 16 years now. It was first bought by my tito for his pentium 4 system, was passed down to his son(my cousin) and has been with me afterwards for 11 years now.

I can't remember the make and model of my Altec Lansing speaker because I bought it before we had our own family car! that was 11 years ago! Even though the bass speaker has been eaten by mice( probably made its own apartment), I still use it. We sold the car last Dec 2019 but the speaker is still here on my desk. I have no idea about Altec Lasing now. I thought they closed. But I feel you. These are some products that will last for so long.

As a batang 90s kid, Altec Lansing was considered the top of the line pc speakers that time. Well, I guess you ultimately prove it right! hehe.. I have budget speakers only, Creative Labs 2.1, hopfully it will last too. So far, hindi pa naman basag yung bass.✌

I also have an old Altec Lansing ACS22 my father got at HMR, 2nd hand, broken in 2003. Still works to this very day. I upgraded my speakers to a HiFi setup with a dedicated DAC, preamp and amp in 2016 but my amplifier recently broke so I had to plug my old trusted ACS22s back. For what it is, it actually sounds on par if not better than the modern popular edifier speakers being sold right now. Also, my sister has the 220 model which also was bought from HMR at around the same time which she still uses up to this day. Altec landing were tanks back then. Sadly. I can't say the same right now.

Altec Lansing ACS 45.1 and 48 were also epic. I still repair these models and prefer working on them compared to the more recent ones. All components are through hole and easier to troubleshoot. The plastics used for the body were also some of the toughest ABS you can find that do not crack with age, possibly automotive quality. Kudos on maintaining your 221 very well

Akala ko nag iisa nalang ako na may Altec Lansing 221!? The best bro! 17 years na rin kami magkasama manood ng war movies! Yun nga lang may squeaking sound na pag nag adjust ng volume. Ayaw din mag connect ang bagong android phones na gamit ang 3-pole plug ng AL221. Great video. I have these same speakers for probably about as long. Use them daily as well, and I really love them. They really do sound great. I do have to EQ the bass down a bit, but once everything's dialed in, it sounds really good. The cube speakers sound crisp and clear, and highs sound great as well. Overall a very nice clean and warm sound, I use them mostly for listening to music. You didn't mention if you had any issues with over-bearing bass and the need to EQ. What are your settings like, and what are you using to adjust their sound?

I suggest using fxsound which can be downloaded on the windows store with these speakers, with some DSP based around the light processing preset, I found them to sound still really good. I suppose I could post what I've settled on after adjusting them for a bit. Try this, I think you'll find yourself not really updating them again for a while longer.
    Clarity +3
    Ambience 0
    Surround sound 0

the RIGHT speaker is muffled by design because that's where the bass is coming from. The LEFT speaker compensate by having all the crisp sharp sound. The louder the volume the heavier the bass. you can separate the two as there is only 1 volume knob. It's a bit weird.

No, you can also overclock with air coolers and actually air coolers provide better value for money. Just be sure to pick the right air cooler.

Parang hindi talaga. Altec Lansing went through economic hardship and now they only make smaller speakers now. I doubt they still make the parts for our old models.

    • @hwsph

Admittedly that specific song has an affect on some speakers. I didn't intend to do it but I guess if you hear it sabog then you might want to consider upgrading in the future?
