DO NOT USE Green Waste Compost without looking into your local facilities practices for creating it. So there has been a lot of concern around Green Waste Compost and we completely agree with it! Basically there are a ton of unknown factors surrounding it like what was used on the lawns (pesticides and such). There are also a lot of others stating that their local facilities add other things that are highly concerning when it comes to food! We love using Coco Coir which is why we always suggest it and we simply wanted to see if we could grow microgreens with this type of compost. We DO NOT recommend people grow with G.W.C. unless they research it. We are using the green waste compost primarily in our lawn and thought it would be interesting to see how it grows microgreens, so we did what we do, experiment with it 😆. Again, if you want to use green waste compost, please look into your local facilities practices and how it is created as there are some crazy/nasty/scary practices listed in the comment section below!
Our closest composting facility mixes green waste with sewage sludge or bio-solids so people might want to check how their municipalities are composting their waste. It actually would be safe to use as it is professionally managed but some people might want to limit its use to ornamental plants. Others would be fine using in garden. Love your videos.
I get that you guys love coco coir. Have you ever done a video on the basics of buying, expanding, storing coco coir. Your videos always show the coir sitting in trays ready to go. As a newb I have no idea how to get to that stage. I had a great success with my first tray of Spicy Salad mix under Barina LEDs. Thanks for all the great information.
🙂David Kelly Have you signed up for our Master Class yet? Please get ready to take advantage of all the information we've assembled for you!!! I believe it gets covered in a video.
Another cool experiment guys. I’m still hoping to get an better explanation though for what you mean when you say you’re dehydrating them for 12 hours. I did ask on the dehydration test but don’t believe I saw an answer. What I don’t quite understand is what you mean by 12 hours dehydration as if you’re watering twice per day isn’t that a 12 hour gap between watering anyway? The only thing I could think of to explain it was that you’re waiting an extra 12 hours e.g. watering in the morning then missing the evening watering so they actually go 24 hours between watering
Thank you for watching Nick Blakehill!!! 😄 Glad you enjoyed it! Sorry for any confusing details ...we advocate watering morning and evening...that's twice per day.
We make several tons of our own compost so for us makes no sense to buy another product, coco coir and increase our expense. As far as the final product, it just is a learning curve with compost to fine tune your process. With coco coir it's pretty consistent and easier as every block of coco coir for the most part will all be similar where compost will vary. Also, greater chance of mold or other issues, but again to have access to free compost offsets any negatives for us. Most people don't make their own compost, and buying it is more of a hassle as it weighs more so lugging heavy bags around and it's just dirty to work with, plus many times those plastic bags have tears and a bunch of dirt in your trunk is off putting as many don't have a truck, coco coir is light and clean so many will find that the defining factor in its favor.
I was so confused by the title - it took me a second to get it! But I agree, coco coir is the best thing since sliced bread and is basically fail-proof. It's my first year using it and I grew great starts for outdoors, first time they have ever come out well!
🙂Thank you so much for the Feedback Jenn W! We appreciate your support! How's that outdoor garden looking...lost our plants to that crazy Texas snow storm we just endured!!!🤨
I'm just getting started growing microgreens. I think I am going to use coco coir. What is your favorite brand and should I add something like worm castings? Should I add nutrients? Where is the best place to get seeds? Thanks for all your wisdom, I really like your videos.
We haven’t found an exact favorite yet, but Burpee organics is up there. As for favorite seed source, we have used TrueLeafMarket extensively and have had great results. Johnny Seeds is great and so are a lot of other seed sources... Check our description below the video for links to our favorite sources.
I love your videos, especially the tests. I was thinking about using compost when I start growing my microgreens. However, I plan to use worm castings (compost). I wonder if I would have te same outcome with mushrooms. I raise my own worms for compost and use it for my plants.
Thank you so much for the Feedback Maria Davis! We appreciate your support!🙂 We utilize worm castings...adds to our crop performance for sure!!! Great work helping the growth process!!!😉
Great vid you two. Opens up some questions about control, safety, and the importance of product labeling I never considered before about micro greens. Ashley Kosko made a very pertinent statement. Will this open a legislative nightmare? Simple and pure is the best way to go.
Something that occured to me about the compost. The producer has no control of what goes into it. If someone decides dumping a quart of used motor oil into his leaves is a good way to get rid of it, it'll be in the final compost. Just a thought.
@@bonilla2022 That's true too. I remember reading a long time ago about someone who had their plants die because they were using a hay mulch that had been sprayed with a broadleaf herbicide.
😉The Problem Is Would you Be~Leaf we're actively working on tasty recipes that will highlight the various flavors of your favorite microgreens in surprising ways...Not just a garnish... so any measure possible to keep the health and nutrients of your crops should be done!!!
Great content. I'm a professional grower and gardening equipment producer. You have captured both the process and results better than I've seen elsewhere.
Hi, I follow your channel and am very interested to start doing this in south Florida where I live. I’ve purchased a few products from you. Please advise what coco coir I need to buy to make sunflower and radish. I love your channel!!
Great video! I have a question though. I asked my local supplier if they had Coco coir for growing Microgreens. He said he has 1) that will need rinsed and buffered and 2) one that can be used out of the bag (already rinsed and buffered). He says that the cheaper one is good value but needs rinsed and buffered. Can you comment on that? Do we really need to rinse and buffer our coco coir? That's a pain from what I can see. Also, if possible, can you specify what would make a good coco coir for Microgreens? I'm not in the USA, so just trying to find one in Canada that would be good to use without much messing around (ie out of the bag or at the most a brick that needs rehydrated). There are SO MANY and I'm just not sure what parameters to look for. Thanks so much!
Most growers say to rinse and buffer Coco... To this day, I've never even tried it to be honest :) We always get really solid grows with Coco so I haven't felt the need to try yet... It's possible the microgreens could grow a lot better with it buffered, but like you said, its a good amount of extra work. I guess we should probably try it out on a video to see the results! I've only had 2 brands of Coco that I didn't like in the like 20 that we've tried. I would give the 1 option that he said needs to be rinsed and buffered a try without doing what he recommends :) We like to bend the rules of growing to make it as easy as possible. Like you said, there are so many brands of coco, so I say just find one you have easy access to, and buy a single brick or bag to experiment with. If you get really bad results, try rinsing out a little batch of the coco and try again without buffering. If that fails, try another brand. Most likely, you will get great results with unrinsed and unbuffered coco. We've been using it for about a year and haven't felt the need to do those additional steps... Hope that helps!
Can I ask what is the temp and humidity inside your grow space? Also would it be possible to do a short video on how to control the humidity? Thanks and love your videos, very helpful.
🙂Thank you so much for the support!! It really means a lot to us john lee! We work at keeping our trailer at 70F and the humidifier controls are set for about 45%...let me know if we can reveal about what we use to accomplish this.
Generally the best practice is good sanitation practices... clean trays, clean hands, rinse seeds if they are dirty like sunflower. You can use a profalatic spray like H2O2 or a vinegar mixture. Also make sure you don't over saturate... too much water leads to decaying seeds. Hope that helps! Happy growing, CJ
Another wonderful video! Many thanks for sharing. Lately, I've been mixing in some rice hulls with my coco coir to increase the airflow. Some times the coir gets too dense. Do you have any experience with rice hulls?
🙂Thank you so much for the Feedback apple369! We appreciate your support! Yeah the coco coir can become thick especially when packed too much to start...we haven't tried your trick as yet...still amazes how them roots love coco coir!!!

Also worth noting is that compost could potentially introduce insects to your setup. I only grow for personal consumption, but I take my compost up to 180 F in a microwave and have had good results in small scale trials. I'm sure you could achieve the same results with a larger volume in an oven.
Great video! Was any extra water added at the very beginning? I was surprised to see such quick germination with no seed soaking and only the moisture in the medium.

i think of compost more like a "more active microorganism, but less available nutrients form for the roots" of medium compared to ordinary soil so 2:1 soil:compost ratio i think is good starter to build one's soil on (among other "less important" stuff like rockdust perlite and kelp powder for example) tho i havent done sciency tests like u guys to confirm this admittedly :D
Controlled, clean, protected environment.... video confirms it with those mushroom spores growing❗️ We started growing our own greens and found o t g chanel👍👍 I agree, if you can’t control and trust the local compost suppliers, it’s worth the extra expenditures to protect the product quality It boils down to pennies and you can’t put a price on our health and ultimately quality for the end-user. 🙏as always thank you for your awesome videos‼️‼️‼️

Just out of curiosity did you stack the trays with weight in the same order every time or did you rotate them? Would that have an effect on the way the greens grow?
We stack them in a random order so that way we can even out the test as much as possible. The weight does effect the way the greens grow. Generally, the tray at the bottom of the stack germinates best because it has the most pressure on it.
Hello Bismark Oliver Lemana ! Thank you for watching our videos 🥳 We have a wonderful blog on this topic! You should check it out. www.onthegrow.net/post/what-to-do-with-the-used-grow-medium-after-harvesting-microgreens
🙂Great question...Thank you for watching PSYCHOPOMP THE THIRD!!! 😄 Glad you enjoyed it! Mandi can often be seen smoothing out the Coco Coir in manner that results in about an inch give or take...the goal in that step has to do with the crop and ease of harvest once they're ready
Another great video guys. I have a question: if Coco has no nutrients why use it at all? Is it just for moisture retention or for the seedlings to have something to root into?
how much water do you add to each tray for bottom watering? Will it be more (proportional to tray size) than for the 1020 trays? In comparison with the 1020 trays, do the roots grow out of the trays into the water a lot?
🙂Thank you so much for the Feedback MEGABOT! We appreciate your support! 🙂Unlike the 1020 trays these smaller green trays sit a bit more above the bottom tray...this gap forces us to add more to allow for the spacing...we still maintain the goal of slight contact of the root to the solution in the tray...the roots will thrive!!!

Since tray 1 and tray 4 were the best tasting, I wonder if it has anything to do withe the order in which they were stacked in the first few days. The two trays sandwiched between the 1st and 4th trays were bitter at first bite. ? The top tray only had the brick on it which wouldn't be the same distribution of weight as the others, either. I don't know...just some thoughts. I'm convinced to invest in Coco coir. Thanks! Also, where can I get trays like those?
🙂Thank you so much for the support of Coco Coir Terri Martinez!! We use this primarily for the microgreens we need for our recipe usage! 🙂 The only lesson we learned not to do with regards to stacking trays is to be aware of how delicate a seed we use... By edible, do you mean none toxic, safe to consume if accidentally eaten? Or safe to eat palatable growing medium that you would want to serve up on a plate?
@@mathewpoole3589 Safe to consume as a food product. One reason I eat and grow microgreens is for their nutrient density . I wonder if we are losing some of the nutrition by cutting off the roots? I know that some companies have and are working on edible packaging/wrappers made from various food sources (grains, seaweed etc). I have been growing on a plant fiber "paper" towel as well as just silicone mesh mat. Just like On The Grow, always wanting to experiment. I also would prefer to eat it, rather than compost it.

Having mushrooms growing on their own is a good thing because it is a sign of a healthy soil. The mushroom mycelium have a symbiotic relationship with the plant roots. Eating unidentified mushrooms is definitely not a good thing.
13:00 this is the problem with using organic/green waste compost that you have not made yourself. Unlike compost that you have made yourself, you have no idea what has gone into it. Just like with how mushrooms have grown here, there could also be seeds from other plants, namely weeds and grasses, that could also take root. This applies to both tray growing, as well as garden beds and veggie patches. Avoid this by making your own compost.
Great point!! Yeah there are quite a few unknowns in using this green waste compost and we’re not the biggest fan of it. Excited to use our own compost soon! 🤗🌱🌱
I think I know why you have muchrooms. You said you can get the soil/compost from facilities which make it from biodegradable trash in the cities, so if people eat mushrooms and throw away some parts of the mushrooms (such as the roots), then those would make their way into the compost and grow there. It could also be that the soil bags in the market have some spores from mushrooms in them. It could also be that one or more of the seeds themselves are "infected" with mushrooms, or that the coco coir just doesn't have the right nutrients for mushrooms to grow in them and you were just unlucky. Though maybe the stacking without light, or the lack of airflow when you tried to get the stems red made it possible for the mushrooms to grow. Actually, I think that if you didn't try to get the stems red, then you probably wouldn't have had any mushrooms.

@@OnTheGrow Thanks! I liked very much all the videos in which you grew microgreens in soil and in paper towels. You could try using paper towels on the bottom, and unscented thinner napkins on the top, so the seeds could more easily sprout through the napkin, than they would through paper towels. Toilet paper could also work, since the cheapest gray-colored toilet paper rolls which look like actual paper are more likely to not have dangerous chemicals in them.

so plants may have been sprayed with a pesticide or herbicide ??
@@bonilla2022 That's true too. I remember reading a long time ago about someone who had their plants die because they were using a hay mulch that had been sprayed with a broadleaf herbicide.

Great content. I'm a professional grower and gardening equipment producer. You have captured both the process and results better than I've seen elsewhere.
Thank you! That makes us happy to hear your feedback! :D Appreciate the support.
Hi, I follow your channel and am very interested to start doing this in south Florida where I live. I’ve purchased a few products from you. Please advise what coco coir I need to buy to make sunflower and radish. I love your channel!!
Any thoughts on using a Brix meter for comparisons?

Hello. How do you avoid having mold on the trays?
Generally the best practice is good sanitation practices... clean trays, clean hands, rinse seeds if they are dirty like sunflower. You can use a profalatic spray like H2O2 or a vinegar mixture.
Also make sure you don't over saturate... too much water leads to decaying seeds.
Hope that helps!
Happy growing,
CJ
Another wonderful video! Many thanks for sharing. Lately, I've been mixing in some rice hulls with my coco coir to increase the airflow. Some times the coir gets too dense. Do you have any experience with rice hulls?

Could the astringency that you noticed in the taste tests be as a result of a few stems having true leaves?

You might try baking the compost to sterilize it, that would fix the mushrooms and other potentially unwanted elements
Great idea! We will have to give that a shot in future experiments! Thanks for sharing 🤗🌱🌱
Also worth noting is that compost could potentially introduce insects to your setup. I only grow for personal consumption, but I take my compost up to 180 F in a microwave and have had good results in small scale trials. I'm sure you could achieve the same results with a larger volume in an oven.

Where do you get your coco coir?
i think of compost more like a "more active microorganism, but less available nutrients form for the roots" of medium compared to ordinary soil
so 2:1 soil:compost ratio i think is good starter to build one's soil on (among other "less important" stuff like rockdust perlite and kelp powder for example)
tho i havent done sciency tests like u guys to confirm this admittedly :D
🙂Thank you so much for the Feedback sooooooooDark! We appreciate your support!

I hope next content is,grow light time on/off efficiency. I mean like using same light but different on/off time. 🙏🙏🙏

Question , do I need to presoak black beans before sprouting? THANKS!
No, not if you’re planting them directly into the soil/medium.
how much water do you add to each tray for bottom watering?

Any ideas on what could be used as an edible grow medium?
