Sunflowers are everyone's favorite in my little circle of friends. A tip for trimming the shoots off the tray: Get your face down level with your blade and I think you'll find better accuracy, and less soil of whatever media you use. Glad to hear they tasted about the same because I have a lot of gray striped seeds and no black oil. I thought the regular sunflower seeds looked better than the black oil in your test, and the difference between the two in final weight is very small.

Experiment suggestion with sunflower black oil seeds: keep the weight on one tray for 3 days 1 blackout keep the weight on 1 tray for 4 days and no blackout. I accidentally left the weight on my sunflower seeds for 4 days and they were so strong and thick that I was able to get a 600% return on sewing rate. Smoothie recipe: 2 cups of sunflower micrograms 1 peeled & chopped Bosc pear 1cup of water 1 Stevie packet 2 Tbsp raw honey 1 cup crushed ice Blend in a vacuum blender

Hey here's what I'd like to see more videos on: how to get good results growing in biostrate. I have had pretty mediocre results and I know from some of your older videos you mentioned you had to dial in your methods to get good results in hydroponic mediums. But I don't think you ever shared those tips, please do!!!

Nice comparison test! My question is why is the word OIL in the name “black OIL sunflower”?? Any ideas? I also want to say that I learned something. I am a hobbyist grower, and I never knew that the leaves after the cotyledons are called “true leaf”. So that explains the name of “True Leaf Market”. Anyway, I hope someone will post about why “OIL” is in the name of “black OIL sunflowers”. Thanks!
I saw a report passed around on Facebook that if given their choice, almost all birds prefer the black oil seeds to any other seed. Hence, many people in my bird watcher group only used black oil sunflower seeds in their bird feeders.
I will say that you don't have to grow these in a UV closet. Sunflowers are one of those plants (a cousin to the humble dandelion) that can grow inside. And because you are harvesting them after only a couple weeks, you can grow a bunch in little cups on whatever window sill you want to use!
Really interesting video, i have just done a batch myself of Sunflowers, not black oil as haven't seen them yet here! Great video as always. Can I ask I have been using fans a bit like yours to create air flow, is there an optimum temperature to keep to after they germinate and start to grow and can you mix full spectrum grow lights with led white lights at all. Hey there! I have a daikon radish micro question. I'm having the same issue with moisture on the cotyledons even though I have only bottom-watered, and they seem to be slightly curled downward, as well. I'm using a coir mixture and using a 3-light LED system (I'm small potatoes as of now :)). I grew some without the addition of light a couple of weeks ago, and they did not make it beyond about 1 1/2". These new ones are closer to 4-5" and super spicy! I'm also growing clover along side and not seeing any moisture on them at all. I was thinking maybe I need a dehumidifier? I do not have a fan blowing on them either. Whacha think it might be? I'm glad you did this comparison, because I do want to grow sunflower next. Thanks! 😊

Thanks for the video. What prep do you do prior to serving or using these micro greens? I mean do you wash them? Do you pick off the remaining hulls prior to storage? Thanks
Personally I pick off the seed hulls after I remove the blackout dome because they are nice and moist and easy to get off. But I only grow 5x5 trays. I know some commercial growers wash them to get the seed hulls off. They have some older videos where they discuss this issue.

I swear I watched like 50 of their videos before realizing they were saying "Seed hulls", I was trying to figure out where the holes were in/on the seeds. I pronounce "Hulls" like the "u" in "uh". They pronounce the "u" like "oh". lol, maybe this will help someone else.

Isn't the significant difference here the number of seeds? Sounds like you used the same weight which seems like it would mean that the quantity of black oil seeds was higher. Sure looks that way when you visually compare the piles. I wonder what the results would be if you counted out the number of seeds and matched on that. Since seeds are sold by weight (I currently see the same price per pound for regular vs black oil on TrueLeafMarket.com), it could turn out black oil produce more simply because you get more seeds for the same money/weight. If seed prices and comparison were per seed I bet the regular would win.

There’s a reason they are so cheap! We contacted some of the suppliers for the wild bird seeds and they said “they do not advise them to be used for human consumption”. The main reason they stated is that there are no regulations for what the seeds are treated with. When seeds are used for human consumption, they have to meet certain regulations, and the wild-bird feed has none of that. Microgreens are expected to be consumed in large quantities, so if there is some poison or anything unsafe about the seed, it is going to be consumed in high quantity and very shortly after germination. Personally, we would never eat the microgreens from wild-bird feed and it would likely be very illegal to sell microgreens grown from wild-bird feed. There are people out there who use wild-bird seed and say there’s no issues, but they have never had their produce tested... I am strongly against doing anything that puts another persons health at risk. Microgreens are supposed to be healthy, so use safe and healthy seeds! You can also contact that individual brand and tell them you want to eat the seeds and see what they say...

It's luck of the draw really... I can't remeber for this batch specifically cause it's been a few years. I remeber we were mostly getting smaller seeds for a while, so it's likely the smaller ones. As long as you deal in volume or weight, seed size shouldn't matter too much. Just make sure you use around 150grams of seed for sunnies. Happy growing! 🌱🌱🌱

The difference in weight between these two is less than 5% and the replicate was "One".
There is no statically significant difference between them.

I believe size is the reason black oil seeds are used in birds seed. Great video

Im growing black oil seeds in a sprouting tray with coco coir. The roots coming through the mesh are brown. Is this bad?

I think that if you had used a dwarf sunflower seed variety it would have no difference.

If you cut off the extra length you have to re-calculate your weight

Was going to say the same thing, the regular had a lot less seeds planted. Fewer seeds, fewer plants kind of go hand in hand.

what sbout the black oil sunflower bird seeds from walmart? thet are so cheap!
There’s a reason they are so cheap! We contacted some of the suppliers for the wild bird seeds and they said “they do not advise them to be used for human consumption”. The main reason they stated is that there are no regulations for what the seeds are treated with. When seeds are used for human consumption, they have to meet certain regulations, and the wild-bird feed has none of that.
Microgreens are expected to be consumed in large quantities, so if there is some poison or anything unsafe about the seed, it is going to be consumed in high quantity and very shortly after germination.
Personally, we would never eat the microgreens from wild-bird feed and it would likely be very illegal to sell microgreens grown from wild-bird feed.
There are people out there who use wild-bird seed and say there’s no issues, but they have never had their produce tested... I am strongly against doing anything that puts another persons health at risk.
Microgreens are supposed to be healthy, so use safe and healthy seeds! You can also contact that individual brand and tell them you want to eat the seeds and see what they say...

Are these LARGE or SMALL Black Oil Sunflower Seeds?
It's luck of the draw really... I can't remeber for this batch specifically cause it's been a few years. I remeber we were mostly getting smaller seeds for a while, so it's likely the smaller ones. As long as you deal in volume or weight, seed size shouldn't matter too much. Just make sure you use around 150grams of seed for sunnies. Happy growing! 🌱🌱🌱

I notice you didn’t soak seeds. In previous video your wife soaked the seeds. Why the difference.
