Organic SOIL with TAP WATER or COCOCOIR with NUTRIENT WATER!? - Microgreens Grow

  • Organic Soil or Cococoir with Ocean Solution as the nutrient?? 🤔 In this new TH-cam video we put these growing methods to the test!! When we grew our very first trays of Microgreens EVER, we grew them with a soil we found locally in our small town and we loved it
    🙃But whenever we moved back to the city, we could no longer find that soil which caused us to search for other grow mediums and is how we eventually adopted Cococoir as being our new favorite... However, we recently found the exact same soil we started with and decided to put our current favorite grow method for Microgreens -- Cococoir bottom Watered with Ocean Solution against our old first love of Organic Burpee Potting Soil bottom watered with Plain Water!

    Organic soil does have some trace elements, like copper, magnesium, iron etc. that coco coir lacks, and these DO contribute to taste and overall crop health. On the other hand, coco coir is a LOT more sustainable than peat moss (main component of commeril potting mixes), and water retention versus oxygen availability is really great, which is very important in the germination stage of any crop and especially microgreens. I am using a 50/50 mix of buffered coco coir and organic soil, and though my overall weight is reduced slightly vs pure coco, I am getting better germination and taste vs pure soil. But I have to admit I am 'cheating': I use a self-made nutrient solution based on Bokashi Juice, so I have a million+ of little bacterial helpers in each tray that contribute to the quality and health of my product. I firmly believe that if your soil is alive, your product will be better.

    Coco coir is not only cheaper, but it seems like an ideal source (re: spent microgreen mats) of material for composting into black potting soil (it even satisfies the 50:50 brown green balancing. Do, if you compost, the coir not only pays for itself if you ordinarily buy potting mix, but it's a free upgrade for microgreens.

    I am new to micro greens and these are just my thoughts... A large portion of the Burpee organic potting mix is coconut coir... It says it on the front of the bag. It most likely also contains some peat moss. I would find it doubtful that it contains any true "soil" or dirt. My theory is that the diffence in taste, and better taste performance by Burpee's might be due to the different fertilizers... Ocean Solution vs. composted chicken manure, feather meal and potash. I would love to see that tested. I started growing my first microgreens 6 days ago, after binge watching your videos for 2 weeks. I appreciate your detailed analysis. I am using coco coir (1.7lbs) with Organic Garden Tone (Feather meal, poultry manure, bone meal, alfalfa meal potash, 4T) mixed in. I am trying my first batches (brocolli, red acre cabbage, pea chutes and cilantro) without PH balance.

  • @jiricandra9513
    @jiricandra9513 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    since coco coir is basically with no nutrients it is something like hydroponics in the end cause you use ocean solution. It is going to take some time until soil and sun will be fully replaceable :)

    Nice videos guys. I appreciate them. The light ones were especially interesting considering the opinions other people have that 1-2 lights is enough for a shelf.
    I find it really silly when I see others compare potting mix with coco coir, without added nutrients. Not a fair comparison at all and a waste of time really.

  • @marcelthomassen3152

    First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to make all of the videos that are so valuable for many of us!
    I did not see ALL of your videos yet (but I saw many already…) and I have a question concerning the use of fertilizer in general, especially during bottom feeding.
    When you feed through the bottom, basically the roots are in the liquid fertilizer and a part of the fertilizer will be sucked up into the grow medium, correct me if I am wrong. I would call this “semi-hydroponics”.
    My question is: did you ever use or experiment with adding Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) to the liquid fertilizer? H2O2 adds extra oxygen to the mix and helps plant roots absorb nutrients better. It also discourages unwanted bacteria and fungi that may be lurking in the bottom tray or on the roots.
    The last 2 months I have done a lot of testing (Masterblend /Coco Coir on very small scale) and I have the impression that it makes a (positive) difference but I am not an expert and for sure not as knowledgeable as you two, for that my question. Of course if you would use soil you could still add the H2O2 to the water. Thanks in advance and again thank you for all the info you are showing us.

    So, how many tray uses do you get from each pack of the the organic soil Burpee and the Coco Coir?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      😄Thank you so much for the question!! Best way I can start the equation is that imagine we use about 7cups per 1020tray. The Burpee you can see the amount in the bag but, as for the brick of coco coir...it expands before you measure things out per brick...it varies some. Happy Spring 2021 Ilhom R!

    which is more profitable to grow microgreens vs. cannabis plants?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on how good you are at growing and selling either...
      I’ve never grown cannabis, but if it gets legalized to grow in Texas, I’d love to grow some to try out. From what I understand, cannabis cultivation is very tricky.
      Microgreens are really easy... and they are legal everywhere. So for barrier to entry, I’d say that microgreens are more profitable.
      If you have trained in growing cannabis and you can do it legally, it can be very profitable from what I understand.
      Again though, microgreens are much easier to grow and you can turn crop into cash in under two weeks compared to cannabis which is generally 3 months to a year before that cash comes back.

    You could try that burpees potting soil vs the burpees organic coco coir. That would be a more accurate test. In coco/hydro, harvests (of whatever, micro, garden plants, cannabis) don't taste as good as soil. The soil enriches the flavor in cannabis but hydro produces bigger yields, takes less time, and is easier. The experiments that you guys are doing are great. Nobody else really does them and it saves a lot of time for people who are learning microgreen growers... I grew cannabis for 10 years and I still learn a lot from all your videos. Thanks.
    Here's a link to the burpee's coco coir that I'm talking about:

    I would like also to see a vs between the burpees and promix organic seed starter because promix is so well-known:

    OceanSolution is just water with pinch of sea salt in it. In it's diluted form, basically has nothing in it, except water.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Actually, Ocean Solution 2-0-3 Liquid Fertilizer is much more than just water with a pinch of sea salt. It's a carefully formulated organic fertilizer made from deep-ocean water and includes:
      - 90 naturally occurring minerals: These minerals are harvested from deep-ocean water, providing a wide range of essential nutrients to plants.
      - Nitrogen and Potassium: These are added to the solution and are OMRI listed for organic use, ensuring they meet organic farming standards.
      These elements work together to promote healthier plant growth and restore depleted soils, making it far more nutrient-rich than just water and salt. You can also go to their website and read this too. oceansolution.com/product/oceansolution-203/

    • @evgenitantikov5865
      @evgenitantikov5865 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@OnTheGrow Sure, but do you know how are "harvested" from the ocean water, and how is called the product after harvesting? 🙂 Also do you know what thing has half the Mendeleev table in it? 🙂 About the NPK do you know how much the solution 2-0-3 endup after diluting it from 1 to 100 gallons?
      For the vast majority of the chemical products, the cost of the product itself is around 1 to 3 cents per dollar, in this case is even significantly less. Rest is advertising, sponsorship, influencers and packaging.
      No matter the Deep ocean or Brazilian rain forest or the Depth of the African jungle advertising, you can't avoid basic chemistry and math.
      If you don't have "deep ocean minerals" 😅 try just for experiment pinch of himalayan rock salt (not the fake one painted in pink) and dash of household 10% ammonia.
