    Although this is all about how wonderful, articulate, smart, and funny Rik was, I also have to appreciate the brilliant interview style of Wogan. He asks great questions, leads the conversation in a natural manner that never feels like he's railroading, and allows Rik to expand, joke, or be serious as he wishes. He's non-confrontational which allows Rik to relax and be unguarded but he still asks quite probing questions.
    A great interviewer that shows how it's one of those jobs that when done well, you almost don't notice how well it's being done.

    • @richardathome65
      @richardathome65 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      No, I disagree; Wogan knew exactly what to expect. He'd been in the business long enough to recognise the difference between actor and character. Part of the interview was Wogan asking Rik whether people in the street confuse him with his characters, which pretty much disproves your theory that he would do exactly that. In fact, Wogan seemed to thoroughly enjoy the stand up routine and the interview. Well done Terry, I say! And of course, very insightful answers from Rik; the guy was a genius.

    Now, I'm only roughly a year away from how old he was in this interview. He actually is my age, and you can see how young he really was here, how he was shy and sweet and still figuring the whole showbusiness thing out. It's crazy to grow up and see that, right?

      The young ones were real life. If you showed a student that today, they wouldn't believe it. You got a YTS. Or college. The poor college kids where l lived. They smelt bad, scruffy, so poor, starving. But really clever. You had to be good to go to college. You also had to live like a vagrant. In my case. Family needed my wages. Gave it all up. No college or university for me. Missed my way. Wanted to work in advertising. That was never going to happen. Used to baby sit for a kid that was a real problem for his parents, could not get a baby sitter due to his behaviour. I taught him how to draw over a 3 year period and the rules of pencil art. He now owns a massive advertising agency. Is that a coincidence. I don't know. He doesn't seem to remember. But l don't mind.

I don't understand how these beautiful people get up there simply to help entertain others and possibly get them to laugh. Are you sure, you didn't hear that about a different comedian? While it's true, that many comedians are rather tragic insecure people, from all I ever heard, Rik was the exception to the rule. Happy childhood, could work with the people he got along with, great creative liberty, wholesome family life ... I'd say aside from his accident that almost killed him in 1998, there were no demons haunting him. He just learned very early on to protect himself and his privacy from nosy journalists. He could be very candid in interviews at times, but he didn't chose this too often.

      @@acsaudiodramasWell put, exactly what I heard & read. There were times after becoming famous at a young age / 22/ when he struggled to keep his private life & not governed too much by bosses/ producers/ TV, but he learnt quite well how to handle this & I think he was happy in his life with family, friends & neverending work - the quadbike thing & consequences was the one big obstacle of course.
