@@zacmumblethunder7466 I get emotional thinking about the amazing guy.. I’ve a lot of happy memories pulled from a bad childhood watching his stuff.. I miss him.
I had the good fortune to run into Rik Mayall way back in the late 80's off Leicester Square one weekend night. We spoke for a period of time about the young ones and this and that, until we parted ways. Lovely friendly man.
Ross is so hopelessly outclassed here even though his guests are toning it down and it is evident how nervous he is to be in the presence of these two titanic personalities and intellects. He knows that at any second Mayall and Edmonson could take control of the entire show, with full audience support and there's NOTHING anyone could do to stop them.
Incredible interview technique here by Mr Ross. He has two of the most popular comedians of the day; one with a larger than life 'Off stage' personality, the other by contrast quieter, more considered and the opposite to his 'On-stage' persona, and yet despite this veritable goldmine of material to work with.... Ross manages somehow to suck the lifeblood out of the pair of them.
Honestly, I can't see how Ross made a career for himself. Kudos to him, obviously. I have yet to come across a clip of Ross that didn't bore or frustrate me.
Ross is just awful..talks too fast..doesn't feel natural interviewer ALWAYS tries to be funnier than his guests. I never ever liked him so couldn't watch interview. Happened upon this clip ugh! Love bottom though
JR always did try to ape that 'American-style' chat show where the host is a stand-up comedian (although I don't think Ross himself ever was), and the guest has to work really hard to get out of the ghetto of second fiddle. Danny Baker did the exact same thing with that show he had in the mid-90s, and that was annoying and unfunny too. You'd pray for someone like Peter Cook or Robin Williams to come on and effortlessly outclass him.
Ross is like a happiness vampire. He drains all good feeling out of everyone he ever has on his show. It somehow makes him feel like a bigger man, even though his career is based on being an interviewer of celebrities, cause he has no talent in his own right,

Ross always tried to take the piss out of his guests, Rik and Ade let him have his way only out of respect for a presenter at that time of night, a respect Ross knew fuck all about
First time seeing this, Jonathan Ross never seems to shut up and let Rik and Ade speak, he's also slightly condescending to them both, Rik and Ade did really well not to get annoyed, love Rik and Ade, saw them twice live in Blackpool, bottom live, funniest show I've ever been to, miss Rik to this day, but he's left us a wonderful comedy legacy
Until now I had only seen Mayall and Edmondson in character, so it's been comforting to see them in a calm, healthy state of being as opposed to one of their awesome, manic characters. Wish they could have talked more. Now I'm gonna go watch an episode of young ones and laugh my a$$ off, again! "Oh! Have we got a video?" "YES WE'VE GOT A VIDEO!!!"

You could tell he was young and inexperienced. He's gotten a lot better over the years, grew into the job as such. I can watch his interviews now, but this one here makes me cringe it's so embarrassing.
It's weird - the gap between 1986 and 1991 felt like a generation, but was only 5 years and was here being held up as an example of how they haven't "moved on" in their comedy. These days, there could be a 5-year gap between series in the same show and no one would blink an eye.
Rik and Ade wrote and starred some of the funniest shows ever. The Young One's, The Comic Strip Presents, Dirty Movie, Bad News, A fistfull of travellers cheques, Mr Jolly lives next door, Bottom. All hilarious. The Young One's broke new ground in the '80s. Plus Rik as Kevin Turvey, and reading Roald Dahl's George's marvellous medicine on Jackanory. Rik is so missed.
@@pastorpresent7774 Yeah, but Ben Elton still wrote material for the show. I know that Rik and Lise his then girlfriend came up with the idea and they got the nod from the BBC to make the show but they felt they needed another writer in to help the show. Producer Peter Jackson said he was going to ask them to get another writer in anyway. If you watch the shows you can quite clearly see quite a bit of what Ben Elton wrote. It's on the bonus disc of the Young One's dvd. Also Lise Mayer said that at first Rik and herself were all over the place, then when Ben came on board he wrote almost all of the first episode. The reason they brought Ben in was because he was at the same university and he had written lots of plays and had got them produced while there. He was very prolific. Ben Elton definitely co-wrote the Young One's. Also Alexie Sayle wrote additional material.

Ode to Rik Mayall by Rob Spratt 2014 I remember the 80′s, when I was still in my teens when four crazy students ignited our screens. The show was The Young Ones. I simply adored it. So funny and different, like nothing before it. The stories were crazy, the characters insane, a collection of misfits who lived in my brain. There wasn’t a playground, where the youth at the time, weren’t doing impressions or reciting the lines. And like ‘Cliff’ before it, the key thing it did was shock all the parents and delight all the kids. The show was anarchic and it hit with such force, that it redefined humour and changed history’s course. There was Vyvyan the punk who was completely insane, a violent psychotic, who had a girl’s name. A loony tunes cartoon, always having fits, and whose solution to all was to smash it to bits. And then there was Neil, the one who dug graves. The peace-loving hippy, abused like a slave. He’d cook for them all - chickpeas or lentils, and he found it quite heavy in a house full of mentals. And what about Mike? So chilled, suave, yet so shady. He fancied himself as one for the ladies. He was always so cool, wearing shades was his norm, with his laid-back persona, he was the calm in the storm. And so on to Rik, who looked up to Mike. But Rik was the housemate that nobody liked. He was shallow and childlike, his tantrums unreal, always fighting with Vyv or else picking on Neil. Rik was deluded, and thought he was great, but to everyone else was a figure of hate. The self-proclaimed poet, who ‘spoke for the youth’, but to say he spoke rubbish was nearer the truth. Oh how I loved the look on Rik’s face when he thought he’d put someone back in their place. His hands on his hips, all Rigsby-style snorting, gaffawing; the self-satisfied smile. The others just scoffed at his pompous pretensions and ignored him whenever he demanded attention. Frustrated and angry, didn’t know what to do, that was our Rik, the rebel with no clue. So, many years later, it’s all in the past. Did they know at the time they’d made something to last? Something important, a stand-out by far, that would affect our culture and the way that we are? Thank you to Rik, Chris, Nigel and Ade for being the Young Ones and the parts that you played. To some it may seem that you were just being daft but no doubt in my mind, masters of your craft. And thank you to Lise and Ben and to Rik for writing what is, a true Brit classic. Of course they all went on to do far more besides But The Young Ones was really where they hit their stride. So, it’s thirty years on, and out of the blue, the TV and web were alive with the news that something had happened, so sudden, so quick; the nation lost a hero, a hero called Rik. I never imagined the pain that I’d feel. The shock hit me hard, still can’t believe that it’s real. I don’t know why, I can’t explain, why I’ve cried so much since and felt so much pain. I guess I loved Rik more than I even knew. It’s like a part of me has been snatched away, too. I keep watching re-runs of the things he was in, and keep thinking of Barbara and all of his kin. And when the kids ask why the adults are crying The adults will say “because inside we’re dying” “Someone we loved, a man we adored, the ‘people’s poet’, is sadly no more”. But one thing’s for certain, it’s since become clear That Rik was a man that his country held dear. I feel happier knowing that, and it’s now a safe bet; the noble Englishman, Rik, we will never forget. Rik, ask us again, “hands up who likes me” and watch millions go up, just so you can see you were always right, that you always knew just how much love would come back at you. Now you’re standing wild-eyed at the gates of heaven, And they’ve heard the bad news has been turned up to eleven. “Flashheart’s arrived!” and while mulling your fate God’s voice booms, “Bastards! Open that gate!” RIP Rik Mayall 1958 - 2014

Ok, so, I'm a 44 year old guy from the USA. I absolutely loved The Young Ones back in high school and other British humor, even getting bootleg VHS of the bottom. I have recently been very in to the game shows (8 out of 10, would I lie to you) and was introduced to the great Mr. Ross.. So to see him this young and still, no different, is a treat.
"Gas" what a hilarious episode. They were brilliant. Have you tried Fawlty Towers, or black adder? Classic British humour!

where in Kent did you go? I'm originally from there.
As an Australian, I finally get the gag; "You're as funny as Jonathan Ross!"
What a jabbering, overbearing prick he is!
Was he going to let them get a word in? What a waste of TV time that was! I'm glad that Rik & Ade gave him very little to work with...his show was not worth their talent.
aww going to miss rick, R.I.P , also Jonathan ross is a bit of a Twat
Ross always tried to take the piss out of his guests, Rik and Ade let him have his way only out of respect for a presenter at that time of night, a respect Ross knew fuck all about
UncleJackOnline He still does
I miss Rik too and Ross is a LOT of a twat.

Eddie: "But he's not funny"

Jonathan Ross would have to be embarrassed now at the complete lack of respect he showed these two in this interview. Very condescending.
I believe he tries to be funny though, it's just that he's a twat
@@BRAMB0SSS I realise this is an old comment but you made my night. That's basically what I was thinking when I clicked 'show replies' thank you!
I doubt it. He's a fuckstain.
I think “Arse Wipe” is an appropriate term for Ross. There are some shite people on TV, but surely he tops them all.
Sadley, given the overwhelming robustness of his undeserved ego, he probably wouldn't even register what a twatt he was..... and is...
I hope Ross knew the genius company he was in. There's zero chemistry between him and those two. What a waste.

They're better educated obviously
You could tell he was young and inexperienced. He's gotten a lot better over the years, grew into the job as such. I can watch his interviews now, but this one here makes me cringe it's so embarrassing.

It's weird - the gap between 1986 and 1991 felt like a generation, but was only 5 years and was here being held up as an example of how they haven't "moved on" in their comedy. These days, there could be a 5-year gap between series in the same show and no one would blink an eye.
Great observation
Rik and Ade wrote and starred some of the funniest shows ever. The Young One's, The Comic Strip Presents, Dirty Movie, Bad News, A fistfull of travellers cheques, Mr Jolly lives next door, Bottom. All hilarious. The Young One's broke new ground in the '80s. Plus Rik as Kevin Turvey, and reading Roald Dahl's George's marvellous medicine on Jackanory. Rik is so missed.
Ben Elton wrote the Young Ones.
@@reinforcedpenisstem Ben Elton, Rik Mayall and Lise Mayer wrote the Young One's
@@kevanbrown7620 Lise Meyer and Rik Mayall wrote the young ones, they got ben elton in to edit the scripts.
Also Alexie Sayle wrote additional material.
i first saw him guesting on the rock on tommy comedy show he totally owned it

Ode to Rik Mayall
by Rob Spratt 2014
I remember the 80′s, when I was still in my teens
when four crazy students ignited our screens.
The show was The Young Ones. I simply adored it.
So funny and different, like nothing before it.
The stories were crazy, the characters insane,
a collection of misfits who lived in my brain.
There wasn’t a playground, where the youth at the time,
weren’t doing impressions or reciting the lines.
And like ‘Cliff’ before it, the key thing it did
was shock all the parents and delight all the kids.
The show was anarchic and it hit with such force,
that it redefined humour and changed history’s course.
There was Vyvyan the punk who was completely insane,
a violent psychotic, who had a girl’s name.
A loony tunes cartoon, always having fits,
and whose solution to all was to smash it to bits.
And then there was Neil, the one who dug graves.
The peace-loving hippy, abused like a slave.
He’d cook for them all - chickpeas or lentils,
and he found it quite heavy in a house full of mentals.
And what about Mike? So chilled, suave, yet so shady.
He fancied himself as one for the ladies.
He was always so cool, wearing shades was his norm,
with his laid-back persona, he was the calm in the storm.
And so on to Rik, who looked up to Mike.
But Rik was the housemate that nobody liked.
He was shallow and childlike, his tantrums unreal,
always fighting with Vyv or else picking on Neil.
Rik was deluded, and thought he was great,
but to everyone else was a figure of hate.
The self-proclaimed poet, who ‘spoke for the youth’,
but to say he spoke rubbish was nearer the truth.
Oh how I loved the look on Rik’s face
when he thought he’d put someone back in their place.
His hands on his hips, all Rigsby-style
snorting, gaffawing; the self-satisfied smile.
The others just scoffed at his pompous pretensions
and ignored him whenever he demanded attention.
Frustrated and angry, didn’t know what to do,
that was our Rik, the rebel with no clue.
So, many years later, it’s all in the past.
Did they know at the time they’d made something to last?
Something important, a stand-out by far,
that would affect our culture and the way that we are?
Thank you to Rik, Chris, Nigel and Ade
for being the Young Ones and the parts that you played.
To some it may seem that you were just being daft
but no doubt in my mind, masters of your craft.
And thank you to Lise and Ben and to Rik
for writing what is, a true Brit classic.
Of course they all went on to do far more besides
But The Young Ones was really where they hit their stride.
So, it’s thirty years on, and out of the blue,
the TV and web were alive with the news
that something had happened, so sudden, so quick;
the nation lost a hero, a hero called Rik.
I never imagined the pain that I’d feel.
The shock hit me hard, still can’t believe that it’s real.
I don’t know why, I can’t explain,
why I’ve cried so much since and felt so much pain.
I guess I loved Rik more than I even knew.
It’s like a part of me has been snatched away, too.
I keep watching re-runs of the things he was in,
and keep thinking of Barbara and all of his kin.
And when the kids ask why the adults are crying
The adults will say “because inside we’re dying”
“Someone we loved, a man we adored,
the ‘people’s poet’, is sadly no more”.
But one thing’s for certain, it’s since become clear
That Rik was a man that his country held dear.
I feel happier knowing that, and it’s now a safe bet;
the noble Englishman, Rik, we will never forget.
Rik, ask us again, “hands up who likes me”
and watch millions go up, just so you can see
you were always right, that you always knew
just how much love would come back at you.
Now you’re standing wild-eyed at the gates of heaven,
And they’ve heard the bad news has been turned up to eleven.
“Flashheart’s arrived!” and while mulling your fate
God’s voice booms, “Bastards! Open that gate!”
RIP Rik Mayall
1958 - 2014
