To all Rik Mayall fans in their 30s and 40s, I hope you enjoy this montage in tribute to the late great Rik Mayall playing possibly one of the greatest TV characters, Alan B'stard.
The part where he knocks the crutch from the war veteran is one of the best 10 seconds in comedy's history.. Pure gold.. Although I loved "The Bottom", "The New Statesman" is Rik Mayall's magnus opus and an incredible show...
Rik Mayall was a HUGE part of my childhood and teenagehood. I saw the Bottom tour twice. I felt quite teary eyed when watching his stint on Crackanory cos I knew it was the last official performance he did.
I'm 63 and just showing B'stard (The New Statesman) stuff to my 17 year old son tonight, who already likes the Young ones and Rik in Blackadder goes Forth (especially the Private Plane sketch which is our favourite). Rik was a really funny guy and very missed by us all. So cheesed off when he snuffed it a few years ago.
I've occasionally wondered if the scene with Alan B'stard's ear cutting and immolation of Peirce's teddy bear (which I first watched in either late 1990 0r early 91) was the inspiration for Mr Blonde's torture of Officer Marvin Nash, in Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs", 3 years later. The similarities are uncanny.
My favourite scene is when the police respond to the animal activists outside Alan's house. Sarah asks why the police always turn up so quickly when he calls them. Alan shows her a photograph. "Yes, it is a bit of an unusual angle. You see, the man on the left is very high up in Scotland Yard, while the man on the right is very high up in the man on the left!"
Its never too late to discover his works. He did The Young Ones, Bottom and Filthy Rich and Catflap for the BBC (by the way we can see all 6 episodes of Filthy Rich and Catflap here on TH-cam) but The New Statesman was an ITV production.
Bought the very first episode on Amazon Prime and halfway through ended up buying the whole season. Truly funny show,and shows how great Mayall was. Sure,funny on Bottom and The Young Ones but here he's more restrained and every bit as funny as ever. Can't believe it's been over five years since he passed and miss him more so☹️
Yeah watching this it's striking how every single second he is on camera , he seems to be utilizing. Looking around the room, reacting to things, dipping in and out of attention with whoever he is talking to. Makes him seem so shifty and untrustworthy. Really is masterful

I should have known that Greg Davies work was not the first piece of black comedy I have ever watched on telly. I should have known that this is a huge bulk of brilliant black comedy. "Why don't you just drape your privates out of the window and have done with it, for God's sake, man." Although that quip comes from my fertile imagination, not from this series. 6/6/23
