Lima is my fave city in SA. As I strolled through the bustling streets of Miraflores, the warm sun on my skin and the smell of freshly cooked ceviche in the air, I felt a sense of vibrancy and energy that's hard to find elsewhere. I stopped at a local café and enjoyed a rich Peruvian coffee, watching the lively scene unfold before me, as the day drew to a close, I headed to the Malecón, the scenic cliffside promenade that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The sunset was stunning, with the sky turning pink and orange as the waves crashed against the shore. I gazed out at the breathtaking view, I felt grateful for this experience in Lima. The city's unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty had captured my heart, and I couldn't help but think that Lima was the best city in South America to live in. The warm and welcoming people, the delicious food, the vibrant neighborhoods it all came together to create a truly special place, really a very special place.

Miraflores in Lima reminded me of a blend between Santa Monica and Malibu due to its green cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I can confirm that Lima is one fabulous place: ancient history and ruins within the city limts, wonderful historic architecture, a chaotic urban vibe that makes you happy to be alive, a local culinary culture that is quite simply world class and just plain delicious ('suspiro de limeña' is one of the finest desserts I have ever eaten), the best anthropology museum in South America and some of the friendliest people anywhere. Also, the shopping for indigenous artisanal crafts is extraordinarily diverse, especially at a fantastic shop/gallery called Dédalo, in Barranco. ❤❤

Your channel was suggested to me today and I love it! I really enjoyed this video! We're thinking of going to Peru in the next year or two. What tour guides did you hire?
Thank you so much for the kind words! If I remember correctly, these are the tour companies I used for different excursions in Peru: Villa El Salvador - Haku Tours Lima Food Tour - Lima Experience/Iza Peru Huacachina & Paracas Tour - Escape From Lima Lima City Tour - Haku Tours My go to for tours, wherever I am is Get Your Guide. I've found them to be very comprehensive in providing a full roster of available tours, almost everywhere. I appreciate you watching and reaching out through the comments.
Lima is like South of California with a touch of Spanish empire and Egypt, (and yeah, there are slums too, I mean, it is still Latin America you know?)
Thank you for the honest view showcasing a little bit of everything. As you probably realized, the contrasts between neighborhoods like Villa el Salvador and Miraflores are part of Lima's everyday life full of inequality and unfortunate situations. Overall, it looks like you had a safe and pleasant stay. As I tell people abroad: it's great for visiting, but no so much for being born and raised. Social mobility is nearly impossible across generations, but working class Peruvians struggle very hard to break through and improve their quality of life. You are very welcome whenever you feel like visiting again. Perhaps, you can try getting a place in more "average" places like Surquillo (next to Miraflores) or Lince (next to San Isidro) so you get a better sense of how everyday life is for the middle class. Thanks again!
I certainly appreciate the comments. I love hearing from people who know the areas that I visit, better than I ever will. Thank you for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful message that will ultimately help those who watch the video and check out what other people have said about it.
It depends on where you were born and raised, like in any city. I was born and raised here in Lima and I LOVE IT. And I travel everywhere, but would never move abroad. ❤

My late mother was entrusted by the ministry of housing then ruled by the military (1970's) to break a land invasion that took place in the northern part of Lima. She mentioned this stretch of arid land in the southern part of town. When she asked the leaders of tha take over to check the land they then agreed to abandon the taken land for their new promised land and peacefully moved onto what is now known as "Industrial park Villa El Salvador"....... she then conducted a demographics study on the first inhabitants. There is a small pathway that bears her name as a tribute for her contributions.
What a great connection you have to Villa El Salvador! I am so glad that you shared it with me. I was impressed with the attitude of the people in Villa El Salvador and the commitment that many of them had to make their community a better place. Thank you for watching and for leaving your wonderful comment.
Bienvenidos, welcome, to the City of Kings. Peru is a very special place, it’s one of the only countries in the world where we have everything, and I mean everything. Here, we have desert, coast, beaches, mountains, plains tundra rainforest, everything ❤️🤍❤️
Lima, the City of Kings, was the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru, one of the largest, richest and most powerful Viceroyalties of Overseas Spain, therefore Lima was the most important city of the Viceroyalty where political power was concentrated. economic and military, in addition to ecclesiastical and commercial power. Lima was the beloved city of the Spanish Empire and was as modern as Madrid. Viceregal Lima not only enjoyed a high cultural level, it also enjoyed an exacerbated wealth and luxury reflected in the beautiful architecture of its palaces, churches, cathedrals, museums, universities and mansions of European Renaissance style,... fused with the Inca contribution.
It is an amazing city, but too crowded, poor infrastructure, polluted, dirty, horrible traffic, crime and lots of poverty. I know I lived in Peru for over 10 years and traveled and worked in Peru since the early 1980s.
Hello Richard. Lima is a discovering . The city has been improving on every aspect. In the 80's and 90's due to Shining Path and MRTA was an abandoned place. But after 2k year , is been improving its beauty . Also abundance of recycled water for watering parks and gardens. Top knotch restaurants + milions of soles invested in restauration of squares , plazas, colonial streets, etc. Besides this, it is a cheap city and safer than most of others cities in Latin America. Peru has one of the lowest homicide rate as 6 per 100k people, data from 2023.
I was totally enthralled with Lima. I'm sure at this point, that it will only continue to get better and better each year! I am so happy that you thought enough to leave a comment. Thank you so much!
The food is a very big part of its appeal. I did an entire video about the food in Lima. If you are interested, here is the link: th-cam.com/video/5ZOfxN6i-Rc/w-d-xo.html
It has been a while, so I don't remember the exact reason that I skipped the Gold Museum. Sometimes I miss a place because of cost, sometimes it is because of video considerations and sometimes it's because I don't have time.
Lima is not only beautiful but a very complex city, is a enormous city (over 10 million people) and has a very unpleasant side too (and is the biggest part of it if you dont know it already)
That is the case with almost every mega city! I acknowledge the challenges Lima still faces, but I contend it remains among the best places on the continent.
Richard, I just stumbled across this video and want to thank you for your insights into the shanty town of El Salvador. Would you be kind as to share the contact of your 'guide/interpreter' there? Peru is a good place to visit, I don’t find is as attractive as you say, especially the much demolished colonial downtown, but it’s delightful. Top: please, please, please practice first how to pronounce the places in Spanish.
Early on I guessed a lot an pronunciation. I am doing a better job with that now. Doesn't make those first Spanish language videos any easier to take, though.

@@oldaloneandfarfromhome Thank you so much, this is so helpful! In your opinion, if I don’t have a lot of money (budget) and don’t have a lot of time to travel, how many days do you think that a person should spend time in Lima?
It is difficult for me to say, since I travel slowly and I am typically in one place for around a month. My guess though, is that you could have a really good experience in Lima by spending anywhere from four to seven days. I hope that is helpful to you!
I would suggest either Miraflores or Barranco, in terms of the neighborhoods. I can't recommend a specific hotel, since I always stay in Airbnb accommodations. Your best bet is to search for hotels on Booking.com. Choose a place with a "9" or higher rating and make sure to read all of the reviews. In Miraflores and Barranco, the closer to the coast, the better.

Wow what a beautiful city, thanks for this video- Lima is definitely added to my bucket list!
It is gorgeous! It belongs on the bucket list of many more people!
If you are still in Lima, take a look around San Isidro, it is a very orderly, clean place and it is the financial center of the capital
I heard about San Isidro, but I never got a chance to go there.
Thank you for the tip!

I agree and there is certainly plenty of great aspects about Lima!
Muchas gracias x sureportaje gracias x mostrarlos diferentes distritos de Lima
¡De nada! ¡Disfruté visitando las diferentes partes de la ciudad!
I appreciate your comments! My proclamation about Lima has inspired strong reactions on both sides!
Beautiful video. Thanks.

Your channel was suggested to me today and I love it! I really enjoyed this video! We're thinking of going to Peru in the next year or two. What tour guides did you hire?
Thank you so much for the kind words! If I remember correctly, these are the tour companies I used for different excursions in Peru:
Villa El Salvador - Haku Tours
Lima Food Tour - Lima Experience/Iza Peru
Huacachina & Paracas Tour - Escape From Lima
Lima City Tour - Haku Tours
My go to for tours, wherever I am is Get Your Guide.
I thought a lot about the Southern California vibe, as I spent time in Barranco and Miraflores.
I am glad that you took the time to comment!
There are worse places in USA,trust me.
Anyone know how Lima compares to bogota? I was in bogota last year and it was pretty darn sketchy…

Old Alone Congrats 🎉 great Info: I remember the 69' late & early70' starter surfing the surfbreaks of Miraflores west coast: 03 surf clubs; Also Waikik surf club Have a SurfMuseum and the surfbreaks of Miraflores are:( Makaha- Waikiki ; Pampilla point; Rocky Point together Tres Picos) and Barranco( called Barranquito surf break and Triangulo ); In those days we do not have surf leash( always focus; carefull on pop up, bottom turn ,backside ,roller coasters the set waves series)🎉 🏄♀️ 🌊 🏄♂️ 🌊
I like to hear about the early days of the surf culture in Lima! Thank you for adding your experiences!
Here, we have desert, coast, beaches, mountains, plains tundra rainforest, everything
❤️🤍❤️
Being there for four weeks was fantastic! It only made me want to return and visit the many other parts of the country that I didn't get to see!
Thank you for the historic perspective!
7:43 Thanks for going to Villa El Salvador!
It was my pleasure! I loved dropping in to see the neighborhood!
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome Thanks to you . . . 👏👏👏
Heaven on earth ❤
Certainly can seem like that!
Peru also has the largest ethnically Chinese community in South America, and its ethnically Japanese community is second only to Brazil's.
It is a pretty diverse city.
9:15 Indeed, it is efficient.
By far, the best way to get around there!
I just wish Lima was better taken care of. It could be so much more beautiful.
I agree. There are some areas that definitely need some work.
Hard to choose between Rio and Lima overall, but the Barranco district was my favorite experience in South America.
I want to go to Rio someday to compare, but you are right about Barranco. It is absolutely amazing!
Lima is nice and what makes it even better is the gastronomy
The food is a very big part of its appeal. I did an entire video about the food in Lima. If you are interested, here is the link:
th-cam.com/video/5ZOfxN6i-Rc/w-d-xo.html
it is true Peru has the best cuisine in the American continent.
That is definitely a big part of its appeal!
How did you totally missed the Gold Museum?
It has been a while, so I don't remember the exact reason that I skipped the Gold Museum. Sometimes I miss a place because of cost, sometimes it is because of video considerations and sometimes it's because I don't have time.
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome Fair enough. I always end up in Pisac.

Lima is beautiful and Peru among the cheapest and safest countries in L.America.

Nice video I believe Lima Population is Over 11 millions Peoples Hugs From San Miguel Lima
It was easy to make a good video, with Lima as the subject!
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment!
I just launched Équipe International in Bogota and will be starting similar activities in Lima, and eventually throughout all of Central and South America. We operate like a 'for profit' company, however we give all of our profits to people in need. We provide food (aquaponics), clothing (hemp w/ cotton), housing (rammed earth and redevelopment of urban structures), transportation (cargo bikes with electric motors) and health (natural products/scalar technology).
That sounds like a wonderful enterprise that you are running! I wish you well!

BEST SIDE peru.
I loved the neighborhoods of Barranco and Miraflores the most!
Would going to only Lima for Peru be worth it and not going to Machu puchu?
I chose not to go to Machu Picchu, but many people will choose to do so. If I decide to go to Machu Picchu one day, I will most likely go and spend a month in Cusco and explore the entire area.
Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment!
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome thank you again! Just another question, what hotel that is inexpensive and nice neighborhood do you recommend staying?
I would suggest either Miraflores or Barranco, in terms of the neighborhoods. I can't recommend a specific hotel, since I always stay in Airbnb accommodations. Your best bet is to search for hotels on Booking.com. Choose a place with a "9" or higher rating and make sure to read all of the reviews.
In Miraflores and Barranco, the closer to the coast, the better.
