One time, when I lived in Peru, my foster family (I'll call them that) sent me about a block and a half away to buy potatoes at the market. I was instructed to spend 2 soles, but I mistranslated my instructions. I bought 2 dollars worth of potatoes. I came home with about 45 pounds of potatoes in a sack. My ex's dad laughed for a week

Sometimes food is sold in dirty places like the one you see on this video, it's chaotic and somehow dirty, people may get sick by just being there and catching flu.
However, my people tries their best to be as clean as possible, being poor doesn't mean being dirty.

I've been half way around the world and love to try new foods. Peru is my absolute favorite country to pig out. Part of that is to do it is so cheap. In a nice restaurant in Lima, I had ceveche and scallop incrusted in Parmigian cheese on the half shell, a water and soda for $11.
You can get the best grill 1/2 a chicken, potato fries and some mix veggies and drink for about $5.

Jurel is a horse mackerel, more closely related to a Jack or Pompano than true mackerel. They are called "mackerel" because of a similar shape. The meat is less oily, less fishy, and more firm than true mackerel, while still oilier and fishier than most fish in the supermarket. A very underrated fish in my opinion. Excellent grilled, smoked, or even deep fried. Not sure I would want to eat one from a street vendor. Being that they are oily they do tend to get fishy in a not nice way if not fresh and kept on ice. Fresh they are absolutely excellent.

0:10 The place where you are is known as Gamarra, it is a whole sector where they are dedicated to selling clothing, in fact it is clothing of very good quality and affordable price, and there are all kinds of clothing, they even sell fabrics and other things
2:42 That is an Aloe Vera leaf, we use it as a natural medicine and/or treat wounds.
8:46 Chicha de Jora is a drink that dates back to before the Incas, it is made with fermented corn.
10:34 Quinoa is an ancient native plant, it is considered a superfood because it has a high variety of nutrients and vitamins.
11:19 That is the andean popcorn (canchita, o canchita serrana), the main difference is that it is made with somewhat old and dry corn and when it is cooked it is not intended to explode like the popcorn we usually know.
12:00 In fact, no, purple corn does not paint the color of urine like beets. Furthermore, each house has its own recipe for that drink, it is called chicha morada. Another fact, we also have corn of more colors

The mother of my children is Peruvian and I have experienced Peruvian food. Most of it is not to my liking but Lomo Saltado is delicious. Easy to make too. Spicy for Peruvians isn't really heat spicy either. More of the aromatic spices like garlic, turmeric and such. Although Aji Amarillo sauce has some heat.

From a Peruvian: the cocha yuyo plate, the firts green bite is nabo (the Peruvian radishe's green leaf). The second one is algae from lakes un the andes. Cocha means any significant body of water. And that style of food with four stews is called a merienda

That "wheat corn" you were talking about looks a lot like huitlacoche (wheat la co che). It's very popular in Mexico. It's basically a fungus that feeds off of corn and is poisonous if it isn't cooked. Many say it tastes like truffles.
