- This was filmed in the afternoon of October 2023. The troop is inside their off-exhibit room at Exhibit 2. Haoko is kind of blocking the entrance. He seems to be paying attention to something going on in the keeper's area. Only Haoko comes out to get ginger leaves. The rest stay indoors. Once the troop goes outside, the turmoil erupts. Haoko bites Momoko in the artificial tree. Momoko gets furious and begins chasing after him. The scene where he bit her was not filmed. Soon, Momoko becomes calm. They move to Exhibit 1 for snacks. Haoko awaits his females to come to the exhibit. Momoko enters the exhibit at last. Sumomo is on Toto's back, but she is looking around, making sure where the yummy food is allocated. Haoko is foraging and keeping an eye on Momoko at the same time. Sumomo is foraging by herself, but soon she goes back to Toto. Komomo forages pieces of oranges and cherry tomatoes. Haoko is keeping an eye on Momoko. To my eyes, he seems to be insecure about something he can't control. I predict there was something nerve-racking going on in the keeper's area. He finally moves to the main grotto and sits there, watching Momoko. Today is Father's Day in Japan. Happy Father's Day to all the fathers on earth and in heaven.
About Western Lowland Gorilla

Habitat: The most widespread gorilla subspecies, and can be found across more than 700,000 km2 of central and West Africa.
Lifespan: 35 yrs in the wild (up to 60 yrs in captivity)
IUCN Red List : Critically Endangered
It is the smallest of the four gorilla subspecies, which also include the Cross River gorillas, Grauer’s gorillas, and mountain gorillas. It has shorter black-brown hair, longer arms, and a more prominent ridge along their brow. The adult males called silverbacks have silvery-grey hair on their backs and thighs. Their heads are large and pointed, with a sagittal crest forming the back of the top head. Its population has been decreasing due to poaching and disease. The estimated population in 2013 was almost 362,000 individuals (IUCNredlist.org). Fewer than 150,000 western lowland gorillas remain in the wild (gorillas.org).

• In 1987 she and Monta were transferred to Japan via Spain.
• In March 1990 she and Monta were transferred to Chiba Zoo.
• In July 1997 she was transferred to Ueno Zoo as a part of the BL program.
• In July 2002 she and Momotaro came back to Chiba Zoo when Momotaro was 2 yrs old.
• In Dec 2008 she and Momotaro were transferred to Ueno Zoo as a part of the BL program.
She has 5 offspring: Momotaro*, Komomo, Momoka, Riki and Sumomo
*Momotaro's father is Biju. He passed away in 1999 from suffocation.

I will try to add thought bubbles whenever I feel like adding, but at the same time I know that I should be cautious of not doing too much so to avoid anthropomorphism, which could lead to a misunderstanding of what a gorilla really is as a species.
ハオコさんとシャバーニさんのパパはかなりの乱暴ものだったらしく、ハオコさんはお母さん似、シャバーニさんはパパ似といわれていたようです。ハオコさんもちょっと荒っぽいところがあって、モモコさんが地面を叩くハオコさんに「なにやっとんねん！」みたいな顔するのが面白いです。ハオコさんも父親のリーダーとしての姿をまねしてるのかも知れませんが、娘たちにもウケないみたいですね。ハオコさんの「はぁ！なんでだよ！」といった表情がかわいいです。ハオコさんも大好き❤
鼻息荒いハオコ→全然動じないモモコ→ますますハオコの鼻息が荒くなる→家族が距離をとる😆 ハオコはお母さん似と言われていたんですね。お父さんのキバブにもそっくりですよね。キバブがメスたちを怒らせまくっている動画みたことあります。キバブもたくさんの大人メスと暮らしていたので、彼女たちの発情期も頻発していたことでしょうし、大変だったのでしょう。ハオコはお父さん見て育ったのは間違いないですね😅海野カモメさん、いつも楽しいコメントいただきありがとうございます。
Haoko looked like his father & had a quick temper. Shabani is a one of a kind & doesn't look like anyone. I've studied kibabu & his troop endlessly.🌟

And to humans' eyes, Haoko is aggressive toward his females at times, but there is always a reasonable factor affecting the way he does it. And Haoko is a great model as the leader of this troop. His kids are growing so well as caring individuals, mostly because of the presence of a reassuring silverback.
