For the people worried about Toto, she is fine! Gorillas have been doing this for millions of years, and Haoko and Toto have mated many, many times before. Riki is definitely going to get a correction from dad if he's caught sniffing Toto with a little too much interest, though...also completely natural and normal. Gorillas haven't been unnaturally confined for millions of years. Toto is locked up--- they all are, so choices that might normally, naturally exist are not an option. They are very close to human, and so I'm reading her very human-like eyes; she really does look sad.

The males have sex with whoever he wants espechially in estrus . That doesn't mean they will get pregnant . It would help if the female pick who she wants to have babies with . Of course if she is still going into estrus then she can probably get pregnant. But I don't think getting pregnant is something that she can will away just because she doesn't like haoko.

It seems like Genki is the only female that only has one mate, that could be because she is a troubled female. I am sad that Japan didn't prepare for breeding. I will leave it there, I get so frustrated with the lack of preparation for many offspring. Haokos big brother had 9 offspring to 5 female's Bauwi knocked up most of them around the same time. You are right. Japan didn't prepare for breeding.🥲 The issue was raised long long time ago probably before the present gorilla house was built in the Ueno Zoo. For more than 20 years, Japan did not make efforts to build trust with zoos in the US and Europe. As far as I know, Kyoto city zoo is doing its best to make connection with the world. Sonja, you're right. Japan could learn a lot from European breeding programs. I think a large part of the problem is money. People want to see babies, and will pay admission fees and spend money in a zoo with babies, and so Japanese zoos are more likely IMO to try to create family groups despite the best advice regarding genetics, personalities and facility availability. You simply can't have a gorilla family group in every zoo, there are too many males for that. But while European, American and Australian zoos are happy to set up bachelor groups, the Japanese seem to refuse to acknowledge what is in the best interests of the animals. I would love to see them exchange gorillas with zoos around the world to work better with the existing captive gorilla gene pool, but I don't see any effort toward making that happen.

@@sonjavandam1306 Sonja, I'm really not sure. Annie was Ai's first baby, so I'm willing to say she may have just been unprepared to be a mom at that time. Genki had no milk supply for Gentaro, who can say why...nutrition, or something else? Sometimes human women have the same problem. Genki has done much better with Kintaro, even if she is a little overprotective (probably as a result of Gentaro being taken away from her due to her milk supply.) As for Sumomo, Momoko had raised four babies on her own just fine before that, so her age might have contributed to the medical issues she was having that required Sumomo to be hand reared. Gorillas are such a precious resource at this point, I'm not totally unhappy when a zoo decides to hand rear for a while, as long as the baby gets plenty of contact with the troop and is reintegrated as soon as possible. Same goes for orangutans, tbh. It's a difficult call to make. I believe Mogo Wildlife Park in Australia is currently raising a baby gorilla after issues after his birth, so it's definitely not an isolated problem. 🙋from the USA!

Hi Ellen. Yes. Toto seems to be very submissive to him. But Toto does refuse mating when she isn't in estrus. On that day, she was definitely emitting some odor. I think she was sending some signal either with her eyes or by odor or both to Haoko that she was ready for it.😉 Thanks for watching!🦍✨
Well, Toto just showed us she might be old, but she ain't dead.😄😄😄😄 And no Haoko didn't just "jump" her or pin her down against her will. If she wasn't interested she would have let him know and nothing would have happened. At some point she agreed to his advances, we just didn't see it. If any mating is going to happen, the female usually initiates it with a staredown and lip smacking/puckering. Chimp males on the other hand are known to take their females by force sometimes--not the gorilla way.

Do they have monkey bars? Gorillas are such acrobats, they love climbing. Maybe she could climb away from males. Or seperate the females during the season like we do for other animals that we don’t want mating?
It looks like Haoko was forcing Toto to mate, but Toto always has the choice to reject if she doesn't want to, and Haoko does not force her if she rejects. Although this zoo has enough space for the gorillas to roam around but lacks climbing structures. I hope the zoo will upgrade their enclosures to meet the needs of the species. I could be a possibility that we really don't know everything about their mating and homonal makeup . If that was the case there would be and over population of Gorrilas . Unlike monkeys . Like maybe one way for making babies and there could be another way thats for not having babies . Not every Silverback might be worthy. I sure would like to know because iits the female that really makes the troop . The Silverback or Blackbacks is just there to protect and flex his muscles . If she don't want to or she is not ready for another baby , her mate can have her many times and it would not happen . I think there is some kind of doing on her part weather mentally or otherwise . . That's what I say and sticking to it . Until I find out otherwise . More research !!! Soo many stories and documents but we always tend to conclude it as they are animals and we have studied everything about them as far as behavior mating life spam their organs and dna . It's time for Sumomo to come home . These two seems to be trying too hard to have a baby ,, that is suppose to be the one that Momoko didn't bring home with her . Poor Haoko it's not working with Toto ✨❤️✨ at least Toto say I'll keep trying . 🤔🙄😄.

Do they have monkey bars? Gorillas are such acrobats, they love climbing. Maybe she could climb away from males. Or seperate the females during the season like we do for other animals that we don’t want mating?
It looks like Haoko was forcing Toto to mate, but Toto always has the choice to reject if she doesn't want to, and Haoko does not force her if she rejects. Although this zoo has enough space for the gorillas to roam around but lacks climbing structures. I hope the zoo will upgrade their enclosures to meet the needs of the species. Biologists know. It doesn't work that way, gorillas can't control their fertility without outside assistance any more than human females can.

Iam just saying really how much do we ( they ) know about female Gorrilas sexuality towards the male when it comes to her knowing the difference of when to mate from when not to .. We're talking about acient , majestic creatures with 986 percent human instincts . What about the one percent point4 that is all their own and we really don't really know about as far as their being that they have develope from the begining of time . I could be a possibility that we really don't know everything about their mating and homonal makeup . If that was the case there would be and over population of Gorrilas . Unlike monkeys . Their choosing of mates and their need for family and troop would have some kind of personal gorilla knowledge and control . Like they do with everything else . It a different kind of human and Gorrila nature all mixed into one interesting reserch that we as human think we know all about . That's why there are still extended studies as we speak . . I might have exhausborated in my comments but I do believe that if their productive system is not quite all like humans . I beg the differ .. mentally also . . Iam doing a little research about this . Because I really do think females Gorrilas do have alot of control on her reproductive system I like what we have been told . It's a thin line compare to humans . We have devices and civilize ways to control our bodies . I think they do too . If they want to . Toto like alot of emales Gorrilas as quiet as it's kept have been know to live up to what we think ior believe because of science and experiments . Mostly on monkeys . So far haven't heard much about the women's role in reproduction if she have she own way of choice that she may . Like maybe one way for making babies and there could be another way thats for not having babies . Not every Silverback might be worthy. I sure would like to know because iits the female that really makes the troop . The Silverback or Blackbacks is just there to protect and flex his muscles . If she don't want to or she is not ready for another baby , her mate can have her many times and it would not happen . I think there is some kind of doing on her part weather mentally or otherwise . . That's what I say and sticking to it . Until I find out otherwise . More research !!! Soo many stories and documents but we always tend to conclude it as they are animals and we have studied everything about them as far as behavior mating life spam their organs and dna . How about their mental control on mating which can be also deceiving espechially in females Gorrilas . I know iam going to hear it just do t make sense what iam saying . Lol I think I do . Thank you Cecilia for watching the video. Females, who gave birth to babies, usually wouldn't mate until their babies turn 3 or 4 years old. Momoko has no interest in making another one yet.😊
