I personally like both imo they look similar the body shape is very similar the back is close both were made for the same purpose I prefer the 2008 evo IX and the 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI
theres an sti just like this one that often passes by where i live and it has like one of the loudest exhaust systems iver ever heard... you could hear the rumble from pretty far away lol, such a great machine..

Tommy hill actually after making an extensive investigation, it turns out that there are three that pass by quite often, a black one, a grey one, and a blue one..im not exactly sure about the years but i could say that they are in the 04-07 range

Funny how everyone forgets that this is a Subaru "IMPREZA" WRX STi...why does everyone leave out Impreza...
2006 or 2007. They're the most exciting to drive in my opinion, have a nicer interior than the 2004, great looks, and are smaller, less heavy and more raw than the 2008-2013 generation. Stay tuned for my 2012 STI review this week to hear more of my thoughts and comparisons between the two models.
of course you can feel the understeer, its an AWD while the BRZ is RWD!
honestly im an EVO guy but this is my favorite Subaru of all of them.
I owned an 06' black hawk eye with the gold wheels with a stage 2 Cobb setup. Almost exactly this car!!! It was the best car I ever owned, every word this man just said was true!
How was reliability?

I owned a blue one, brought it to stage 2. Absolutely insane, ended up selling it about a year ago because i moved away to go to school and didnt need a car. just make sure if you are interested in one of these to get it inspected by a subaru dealer. people beat the shit out of these cars, its a must to get a full inspection by a subaru tech team.

That was my car. Man I miss my STI. I was working for Subaru in 05 when I 1st saw the new 06. I ordered my 1st and only so far new car in late 05. A black 06 STI . IT WAS A GREAT CAR . I HATED THE INT ! The blue is so cheese . The stock hp of 300hp is not enough. But its easy to tune and make good power. But trying to pay for the car the insurance, Super plus gas,mods and tuning, dyno time is not easy. I WAS CAR POOR AFTER OWNING THIS CAR. This led to me not driving it in winter or bad weather . Just to keep it mint.. In 2010 I sold it . I wish I kept it . But I needed the money for investments for my future . Which worked out GREAT money wise but not fun wise.
Do you really have to tune it alot to make the engine sound bad ass?

The 06-07 STi's are so hard to find unmodified, I don't mind after market exhausts and intakes, but every time I check out who's selling they're always slammed and with stance. I just wish they still looked similar to this, right now the newer Imprezas and WRX's look like Speed3's and Scions TC's. They don't even look like rally cars anymore.

I just bought one of these last week. It is an amazing car and turns a lot of head in my town. I would highly recommend saving up for one.

Thanks for reviewing the 06 STI! I own one and you're right, it really pulls hard and u can feel it everytime the turbo kicks in after arnd 3k revs. Its always a blast to drive everytime!

Dude, if you think an Evo clutch is heavy, do not ever even try to drive any older Mustang with an upgraded clutch. The clutch in mine my gf wasn't able to push it in, and my clutch isn't even that extreme of an example. Most people are shocked at how stiff cable operated clutches can be, but I liked them because you can feel the clutch very well and they tend to be easier to maintain and repair if you have problems with the clutch compared to hydraulic systems.
I have the 06 2.5i and I love it I have some big plans! Soon I'm fixing some body parts repainting from black to gray, new rims, tires too. Also the future plan is to replace the 2.5i with the 3.3l flat 6 so it gets nice power n/a. Then eventually boost it!
I agree with you on the 06/07 Impreza STi's. BY far my favorite aside from the GC body styles. Glad you got to have some fun in this STi, super clean. The previous owner took really good care of it, especially the black paint. Maybe I will get one to park next to the BRZ.

The seats are the reason I buy sti and not evo or before, srt4. I am 177 pounds with wide shoulds, those narrow ass seats suck

It would be really nice to be able to see a comparison with the 2006 with the 2007 STI. The 2007 had many changes such as new turbo, longer gearing on 2nd - 4th, limited slip diff, etc. As well as a review on the GC8 STI which is like the god of STI in my opinion.
If you did a review on every STI year, you can end the "Which year is best STI?" battle. lol

If I had to pick my favorite year out of all the subaru impreza's, I would definitely say that the classic gc8's (1997-2000) would be the best. But the 06 Impreza's are a very close 2nd IMO.

Find one that has been well taken care of with all the service records. If it's really clean looking, chances are it was treated and maintained well and you shouldn't have any problems. Subarus are generally very reliable cars.
I currently own a bugeye. I enjoy the basic interior. It feels to me a very driver oriented car. I'm going to start shopping around for a hawkeye STI in a few months. I'm super excited

Front looks amazing, but I like the newer versions of the rear a LOT more. Have always hated the single exhaust and mushed looking rear.

I had always love the evo ix (still saving up for one at the moment), but after seeing my cousin owned a 06 sti. I'm starting to have a change of heart of switching over to a Subaru. I know both cars are great, but the notion of one being better than the other is starting to seem silly now. It just really dawned on me how really great the 06 sti (or any other previous or newer models) really was. If you had never been inside a sti before, test drive one.
does anyone know the reliability on these cars are cuz I'm planning to either get a 06 subaru wrx or a bmw but want to know if I can drive this car everyday without running into expensive repairs
I really can't tell you about subaru but if you wanna avoid expensive repairs don't buy a bmw.

Yeah definitely. I drove it off and on over about 8 hours time, many times driving for well over an hour and never felt uncomfortable once.

I'm right behind you there bud. I'm driving around in a 92 Accord and I fucking love that car to bits, but I'm saving every cent of cash to buy an 06-07 WRX or maybe even take out a loan and get an STi. I feel like the WRX would be the more practical choice though. It's cheaper to upgrade and I could just throw STi parts on it to make it look and handle better. Plus the 5th gear is a taller ratio than the 6th gear in the STi so it gets better mileage and makes a better highway cruiser. My commute is about 90% highway driving so I think i'll just get a WRX and throw an STi spoiler, springs, and brakes on it. That combined with an accessport, unequal headers, and a turbo back exhaust + turbo up pipe would make for one hell of a DD.

Between the WRX and the WRX STi? A lot. the interior gets better seats, a 6 speed instead of a 5 speed, better wheels, a different front bumper and bigger rear spoiler, lower and stiffer suspension, the badges, a bigger turbo and mapped ecu to give it an extra 80hp, much better brakes, and a different key.

I've got an 2007 about the same but front and rear splitter and black alloy momo wheels. Some tit hit the back in a carpark and left without being caught. Very gutted, insurance should clear to help fix it. Have had a few and an evo 5, prefer a scooby though

The best looking grille ever to grace the Impreza line of Subies. It also looked great on the Tribeca.

When I first saw this video in December 2016, an STI was just a dream. 2017 I bought a WRX, it was the only thing I could afford at the time.
In 2022 I had the opportunity to purchase a 2006 Hawk STI that had everything I wanted.
I still come back to this video every so often to remind myself why I love Hawkeye. Thank you!

Done that up much more an sti can ever be. (Put 40k into it so far) same stock seats tho I swapped ages ago, but I went back. Best seats ever. Seriously. Greatest car ever.

Is $19,000 too much for one of these STIs ? Completely stock with less mileage than what it's supposed to have? How worth it is is this car BC I really love the STIs but don't want to get a 2015 one, I've loved the 04-06 ones the most
