When a Subaru enthusiast like me sees someone caring for their older STI, it makes us feel good about the future. We these cars get riced up or blown up far too often and it’s annoying. Now people have perpetuated the myth that the boxer 4 is unreliable. It’s worked for 30 years and suddenly now people think it’s unreliable. It usually happens when someone flogs the rev limiter and skips basic maintenance then the car breaks and they hit the forums screaming about how bad Subaru engines are.

At 18 I bought an 07 STi because I could.
Financially , not a good idea.
Fast forward 4 years later, and it’s been broken in the garage for almost 2 years due to bearing failure.
I bought it modified, and did nothing but modify it more on stock block.
I learned soo much, but honestly sometimes wished I didn’t modify it so much until I had the money to build an engine.

I love how this video is produced, it shows a lot of passion about these cars which goes a long way. As a 2005 sti owner myself, I would have to agree that getting a 2nd car as a daily would be ideal. It is hard and expensive to find these cars stock and with low mileage and with that brings more risk. It is a Subaru, it will have problems over time like any performance-based car. I've had my 05 STI for 4 years and I can't imagine not having it. They are not the fastest cars in the world but they bring an experience behind a wheel that I have yet to find in another car. Dude I'm addicted to your content man. Makes me miss my 02. I mentioned in another comment about buying a busted 02 and rebuilding it. I had a very similar situation, I had a 96 civic as my daily and about 8k to play with. About 3 went into tools and the rest went into the build. Got it home, pulled up a youtube video, and started pulling the engine. I wouldn't trade it for the world. I went from never having changed my own oil to replacing rings on an STI. You've seriously got me looking for an impreza tonight. Hey youtube, anyone got an 02 for sale?

I started with an 05 WRX and then spent 6 months trying to find an 05 STI that wasn't destroyed by the previous owner... some "excellent condition" vehicles I inspected included one touched up with matte black rattle can paint, and one that was blowing smoke from the engine bay and went into limp mode during a test drive, after looking at more than 10 I gave up! Finding a good STI (and owner) of that generation is the hardest part, at least down in here Australia... Thats how I ended up with a 2017 STI. No regrets, needed for daily uses as well but do have a very special spot reserved in my future garage for an 05 STI one day... Nice video.

I agree with you on getting the older one. I absolutely love the white one you have. Problem I see is trying to find one thats in great condition and without having it be a money pit. Another angle is with 2021 being the last version of this gen of STI, they may even appreciate. The driving experience is probably more raw and even better for a driver in the older ones, but for what the STI is worth compared to other manual options in todays current market, still think it is an amazing vehicle for what you get if you are truly a driver. I have a 2019 and trading it in for 2021 white STI and the last gen. looking at it as a fun daily (won't mod except a catback potentially) and as a potential investment that may appreciate. I purchased my 06 world rally blue back in May of 2006 and still have it. Recently put a Cobb titanium exhaust on it and love it even more.
I was pro-tuned stage 2 for the first 100k miles of ownership and I think I did some slow but latent damage when I tracked it multiple times during summer at over 95F degrees. The tune was probably safe on the street but beating on the car at 5K+ rpm constantly at 95F for 20 minutes straight on multiple sessions leave less room for error. It probably also didn't help that the car saw 6k+ rpm daily as I like to rev it. I returned the powertrain to stock at around 105k miles but some damage was already done by then. The engine held out for another 55k miles.
161k miles later, the oil consumption got so bad (consuming 1.2 qt per 1k miles) and got cylinder #2 misfire. I replaced the short block with new Type RA unit, a new turbo, new intake/exhaust valves and all the hoses/pipes, clutch, oil pan, oil pump, engine mounts etc anything that was deemed "old".
I'm now at 163K miles and the car is happy and burns zero oil. I still have paint peeling off the roof and the hoodscoop but I still love this car a lot - I'm never selling it.
Things I learned during 18 years of EJ257 ownership is change oil MORE often than 3,000 miles if you like to rev it because we still found some oil sludges during engine teardown despite me sticking to 3k mile oil change interval religiously. Also change the oil BOTH BEFORE and AFTER if you track it. I either tracked the car on used oil then changed it, or changed the oil then tracked it but drove it for another ~1k miles on street before I changed it again, out of laziness and I paid the price. Also be ready to pay to play if you tune it then track it. I saw the coolant temp gauge go beyond the mid point ONCE during the life of the car and it was on the track - that must have been when I did some damage to the exhaust valves.

05 STi here on original clutch 135k miles. Cobb Stage 2 only and never had any issues with this car beyond replacing the radiator and regular maintenance.

*I want to buy the new Subaru WRX STI just cause it looks so much sexier and more practical better quality and design but an old Subaru wrx STI would make better for a project car*
