  • Best radar detectors from Escort, Uniden, and Valentine versus off-axis 33.8 GHz Ka-band police radar test
    We test the best radar detectors from Escort, Uniden, and Valentine versus an off-axis 33.8 GHz Ka MPH police radar.
    During our recent 10,000 round-trip cross country road trip we come across an parked police cruiser that had its MPH 33.8 GHz Ka mobile police radar left on in continuously transmitting mode.
    If gave us an opportunity to test the off-axis radar detection capabilities of the following radar detectors:
    Escort MAX 360c MkII
    Escort MAXcam 360c
    Escort Redline 360c
    Uniden R8
    Uniden R4
    Valentine V1 Gen2
    The results were clustered into four primary groups.
    The best radar detections came from the Uniden R8 followed very closely by the Valentine V1 Gen 2.
    They alerted in about one second of each other and provided between 30 and 29 seconds of total altering time to the cross road where the patrol vehicle was parked.
    The next cluster was the Uniden R4 and the Escort Redline 360c.
    The Uniden R4 gave us an additional two seconds of alerting over the Escort Redline 360c.
    The Uniden R4 trailed behind the Uniden R8 by about three seconds and the Escort Redline 360c trailed by five seconds.
    The remaining two radar detectors alerted substantially behind the four best radar detectors of the first two clusters.
    The Escort MAXcam 360c which alerted 15 seconds behind the Uniden R8.
    The Escort MAX 360c MkII which alerted 19 seconds behind the Uniden R8 and four seconds behind the Escort MAXcam 360c.
    The approach speed was approximately 30 mph which equates to 44 feet per second of travel.
    The total distance to the cross road was therefore 1320 feet or exactly a quarter of a mile.
    Model, Distance, Alert Duration, Percentage of Best, Approximate Sensitivity Difference
    R8: 1320 feet away, 30 secs, 100%, 0 dB
    V1 Gen2: 1276 feet away, 29 secs, 96.7%, ~ -.25 dB
    R4: 1188 feet away, 27 secs, 90%, ~ -1 dB
    Escort Redline 360c: 1100 feet away, 25 secs, 83.3%, ~ -2 dB
    Escort MAXcam 360c: 660 feet away, 15 secs, 50%, ~ -6 dB
    Escort MAX 360c MkII: 484 feet away, 11 secs, 36.7% ~ -7 dB

    R4 does and amazing job at off-axis alerting. Had a cop in a U-turn yesterday shooting that way and got almost a mile notification before passing the source of the radar. I have and older R-7 and it won't alert until you are almost right at the source. Much better performance with the R-4.

    Out of all of these I have a escort Max 360C and I can tell you that if I were to approach this town after he did this test the report through the internet back to my detector would have alerted me back out in the country when it was just grass and trees before you ever gets the houses as you came up that road the big white colonial house on the right would have been a mile or two away before I had already been alerted then I get there my detector would actually pick up the signal that's the beauty of it all the rest are wonderful detectors that are lacking the internet reporting of anyone who is detected ahead of time and if that happens and it gets reported I know so far away I could go to another town and drive all the way around this one

    I already have a V1 gen2 in my car and I love it. Thinking of getting a second detector for my other car. I'm on the fence between the R8 and the Redline.

    • @RadarBusters
      @RadarBusters  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have real reservations about the Redline. It’s behavior is sometimes odd and erratic.
      I didn’t mention it, but if you look at how the RL alerts at the parking lot, it’s reported signal strength is not consistent like the others.
      I’ve seen this through the Redline series over the years. It’s like the detector is being subjected to very heavy handed signal processing and control. And yet it’s not the same algorithms I suspect being used with other Escorts. The 9500 series also acted inconsistently which is why I didn’t rely on them.

      You can’t go wrong with any R series Unidens and we are fond of the Escort MAXcam 360c, but not enamored by the Redline 360c in its current form (ie; firmware). The Whistler Titan is also a good choice.

      Didn’t test it as we didn’t bring one with us. But since it’s effectively a rebadged Uniden R4 but without the LNAs of the R4, I would guess it would alert a behind the R4 and the RL 360c but ahead of the other two. That’s just speculation, though. We didn’t have a Titan with us on this trip or we would have thrown that into the mix.

    The R4 is undoubtedly the best value radar detector out there. Competes very well against the radar detectors that are almost double its price.
    I've never understood the value of radar detectors that tell you the direction of the signal, but everyone has different needs.

    • @RadarBusters
      @RadarBusters  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Directionals help you quickly determing where a detection is likely coming from, from the front, rear, or side. With sensitive detectors that can pick up signals from all directions, having a arrows helps you where the likely threat is or when you passed it (like on a divided highway with trees obscuring the other direction of travel where a trooper may be operating).
      This can also be accomplished with some less accuracy by understanding the signal strengths that occur on a signal antenna radar detector.
      So you are correct, it does come down to personal preference.
      The Uniden R4, Escort MAX 4, Whistler Titan, and the Cobra RAD 700i all are very capable in this regard which are at similar price points.

      I hate to be such a big escort Max connected Doctor fan but your statement is true for mostly detectors it is not for the escort Max's with internet. If anyone does see which by the way you can mark and or be alerted but if anyone does see and witness anything related to timing or airplanes or anything else they can report it the internet will report it to you and I could know about it miles before the big white colonial house on the right I turn off that road and drive all the way around this whole town never even come through it most detectors you're right escort masses with internet get around all this they have the greatest detection not because of radar antennas but because of the internet reporting from somebody else's radar antenna that's miles ahead of you and yes of course there might not be anybody who has one but guess what so many times I've come over here around the corner or anything and been alerted well before to the point that I slowed down 5 mi ago before I ever got to the place before my detector went off a mile early

    I can't believe people still believe in these things. Unless the radar was just left on as in this case, by the time they go beep the radar signal has already hit your vehicle and bounced back with a speed to the radar unit. Modern radars are remote controlled. An officer doing speed enforcement with one will keep the radar off until they see a target they believe is speeding, estimate its speed, and then turn the radar on for the reading to confirm that estimate. If that speed is higher than what that particular officer's threshold is, the lights come on and you're getting a ticket.

    • @Ronton617
      @Ronton617 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Most of the time in my area they just leave the radar on more often than not. If they are doing instant on and you have traffic ahead of you, you will be alerted with the hits on other vehicles. Or I like to call them "bait" vehicles. As long as you have cars in front of you, you can beat instant on. If there is nobody on the road in front of you, then you are right you will be hit. The only time I might encounter that is very late at night or very early morning. Even then, there are usually cars in front of me.
