You Will Never Throw Away Used Milk Jugs After Watching This

  • Many households go through at least a gallon of milk a week. But why throw all those jugs away when you can repurpose them? Honestly, milk jugs aren't always the most aesthetically pleasing. But, they make perfect gardening tools and accessories.
    The plastic used for these jugs is thick and sturdy, so you can use them for a variety of purposes -- from shovels to pots. Plus, they are easy enough to paint and spruce up. Here are few of the many things you can do with empty milk jugs.

    I cut round hole on the side. Put my huskie's fur inside and hang it on the tree. Birds love to warm up their nests with dog's fur.

      Why don't you winter sow instead? Put them outside in the milk jugs and leave them with the lids off. Saves all the faffing of hardening them off.

    When using it for a watering can, poke your holes through from the inside of the lid. Otherwise the water sort of gets plugged up by the raised plastic when you poke from the top side.

    • @CourtneyBerry
      @CourtneyBerry 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I poke mine from outside and it doesn't do that to me. I've always use bottles/jugs with holes in lids for watering.

    • @dcwatashi
      @dcwatashi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CourtneyBerry could depend on what you are using to poke the holes with.
      Still better to go through from the inside. Then a little bits of plastic that you are pushing through will face the downward position when you are using jug as a watering can

    • @midkort
      @midkort 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was what I thought when I saw the watering jug idea, too.

    • @axlent123
      @axlent123 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And do you need to poke a hole in the side to prevent a vacuum forming? Similar to the two openings in a gas can..

    • @dcwatashi
      @dcwatashi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@axlent123 I think that's a good idea. That's what happens when I'm using the milk jug for my Alaska fish oil fertilizer. Love your TH-cam name 😀😂😂😂

  • @misskim2058
    @misskim2058 5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    Once a vining plant entirely covers the jug, the jug itself becomes invisible, and for some, a row of those will help create a visual screen from the nosy-pants next door neighbors...

      I use either a bungie type cord or just some rope or sturdy twine and after you clean them out and drain them, just string them together thru the handles and hang them either in a shed or I just hang them in my pantry room...good luck

    I have another use for used milk jugs. When I lived in Central Texas it was hard to get new trees and shrubs to start when we were in a drought. I took a milk jug and drilled a small hole, the smallest drill bit my index had, into the bottom corner opposite the handle. I then drilled the same sized hole into the lid and filled it with water. The water dripped out slowly, and sped up a little as the sun warmed the jug. It took over an hour for the water to drain out, which is perfect if you place the jug right up against the tree trunk or plant. When there is a water restriction you can only water once or twice per week, but putting out water jugs or bags is fine. I was able to keep all of my plants alive through the summer with milk jugs, and my poor neighbors lost most of their plants and all of the young trees (it was a new neighborhood). A few saw what I was doing, asked about it and saved some of their plants. One gallon in the morning and one in the evening will keep even trees alive. More if they are large. Droughts are rough, I saw oak trees that were over 100 years old die that first year. So sad.
    If you are worried about how it looks, you can cover it with a burlap bag/sack. In fact it will water right through the sack if you place the jug inside it. Putting burlap around the base of a new tree or other plant is a good idea in drought prone regions. The burlap shades the top of the root ball area and holds onto moisture.
