My husband and I have been doing this for years to water our gardens. I also use any water I have cooked vegetables in, water from boiling eggs, etc. We’ve always had a little trash can under our sink and save egg shells (uncooked), coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable peelings. We created an enclosed compost area in one corner of our yard. We put everything from this compost trash can in there along with leaves, small amounts of shredded paper, etc. it sits in there and cooks all winter. In spring, my husband turns it all over, we put a big screen over a wheel barrow, dump piles of compost at a time, rake it back and forth with a straight metal garden rake and the wheel barrow is full of beautiful soil for my flower pits and flower beds. Works every time. We are usually able to fill up two big plastic garbage bins.

Years later, when we had a column replaced on our back patio, we decided to replace the gutter that was there, but a huge rainstorm came up before we could. I watched all that beautiful water going to waste so I put our old 55 gallon barrel there to catch the rain. We very rarely have to use the hose for our garden, because miraculously, seems every time it gets really low, God sends the rain to refill it! ☺️
I wanted to capture rain water for my garden. So we put a barrel where it would catch run-off from the roof. Someone from the city told us we couldn't do that, it's against the law here!!! In the meantime, we have some of the highest sewer bills in the Midwest! But if you quest the sewer department about the bill, they say, well it's not the usage from your facilities, We Have To Process all the Rainwater that runs on your property Too!!!

I wouldn't have gutters if I couldn't have water collection. The water would go into the ground where it belongs not at some water collection site. 73
When I lived in Alaska, ALL of our water was captured from the roof and filled 2 10,000 gallon cisterns. It was awesome water, naturally soft and all we did was filter it for drinking
What in the world scares you? It is pure water collected in a covered cistern. It is not a stagnant pool in the forest breeding mosquitoes! The water is filtered for the little bit of dirt from the roof (remember wells are dug in the ground). If you want to be afraid, go ahead!
If you're in the south, I hope you know better than to use hot glue outside. Use E-6000, and give it 48hrs to dry before you put it outside. It will be heat/cold/water proof for years to come.
We have been using collected rain water for ten years. We have two barrels attached to two different downspouts in our back yard. They are old pickle barrels and we water our plants and flowers and even add water to our pond. A great water conserving idea!
My parents used to do that because if we needed to we would use the rain water to water our plants and our garden. People just don’t do things like we used to do when we were growing up .

If everyone collected rainwater because their tap water was regulated due to drought, it would be catastrophic, so laws get put in place. The only place I can think of I knew this happened was California when I lived there, though

For a better tap seal, rather then using just tread tape with that ultra thin plastic hole. Use red fiber washers inside and out then hold the tap in place using a 3/4 back nut or socket. It will be a much more secure fitting.
We do this at our house. We have a 44 gallon can on each corner of the house. But those little holes will not allow a lot of water to flow in, this of course depends on how much water comes down a particular spout. On my house, if it rains pretty hard for 20 mins all 4 cans are full and overflowing. I cut a small hole at the top of the can to allow over flow to escape. Put another fitting in that hole and run a pipe to another can nearby.

For those wondering, he's using a Forstner bit. They're good for making clean holes in wood while removing all of the material. If you need to make a blind hole, I'd rather a Forstner bit over a paddle bit. Cleaner, flatter, and less risk of catching and twisting.
Great ideal. I used a similar version but the lid was missing and I had mesh over it but it kept coming loose. Finally last year, someone stole the can. I will do it again using your idea, however I am putting the mesh on the upside of the exposed part of lid so it will be easier for me to clean it off. I am also going to put some bricks in bottom of my can so it won't be easy to be carted off like last time. Also I definitely is going to paint and put some designs on can to make it less attractive to steal too....🤗
So it doesn't take away from the design of your home you can move the collection system to the rear downspouts of the home and this way your home looks great and it doesn't offend the neighbors. Also even though it's quite strange to me why? There are laws like this you're not allowed to harvest water in all States. However if you? Move. The? System. To the backyard behind a privacy fence or where it's not viewed from a neighbor you can harvest away! But you should check if you're thinking about putting them in the front of your property. Where are they are viewed from the street and might cause problems with the neighbors? That are being nosy .
My only suggestion is to use plastic spigots-plastic and metal expand and contract differently in the heat/cold. Eventually the spigot in this one may leak or even come out.

So neat . We use an old plastic Greek pickle barrel to collect rain water and when there is water restrictions, we can still water our plants. The plastic garbage can is excellent thank you , I can see one in our future .
Use a locknut from a romex connector, or a locknut from a faucet on the hosebibb inside the trash can to prevent the hosebibb from popping out. It will also hold it tight and prevent a leak around the penetration of the trash can. Make sure everything is 1/2" IPS threads.
Great idea for collection surface water but two questions. Where was the water going before putting the reservoir under the drain pipe outlet? What happens when it is full and you have a downpour? Why not put a diverter into the down pipe so that the over fill goes directly to the original surface water drain? Or better still create an automatic irrigation system with piping or hose around the garden. More than one reservoir could be linked by an outlet/inlet .Water finds it's own level so each reservoir will be as full as another.
In the area I live, rain is not common. If we get a good downpour, that might be the only one for a few weeks. By then, the water in the reservoir will be all used up, allowing more space for the next rainfall. You asked some great questions and it is appreciated.
I use a slightly different methid-55 gallon drums. One is set on a pedestal-like he has in the vid. It is under the downspout. on the side I have a simple connection with a male spigot that is about 7" from the top. From there, once the drum fills the excess water goes thru a PVC pipe into a different barrel further away. Then I do the same in series. Several barrels lined up, first gets the water from the original barrel, fills then a short pipe into the next one and so forth. Except for hurricanes I rarely fill all barrels from a singles storm tho it gets pretty close. I like his idea but think the plastic used in the trashcan is too thin and will weaken over time but the same idea can be applied can under the spout then a series of other connected cans in a different location for storage till needed.
I just got an idea on how to add water to my pool during a rain. I’ll be adding a hose to a rain barrel and just open it up and drain it to the pool. Has anyone else done this?
@@65armadillo yes, we do. Some local councils in Australia require you to have these for all pools. If your pool is close enough to your house you can just put an extension on the end of your down pipe and run it across your garden beds etc and have an elbow that juts out over the edge of the pool. It makes a huge difference to our pool. We very rarely have to top up with town water.
But why doesn’t water find its level on a ball earth? Aren’t the oceans in a sphere shape? And then there’s that moon that moves oceans but not ponds and sinks of water.
Love this idea. I do have a hose spicket but never use it because years ago someone decided the best place for it was in the cellar and the hose would run out the cellar window. Just odd and inconvenient. I have my plants out all over the property during spring and this barrel would work better and conserve water at the same time . The rainwater collection idea is so genius. I'd probably put my filter on top for easy removal of debris but I still love it....and the trash can is absolutely beautiful!
I have a big tank for collecting water. I use a pre filter system and it works perfectly. Us a pipe with a cap on it then put a tee on pipe just above the lid. Dirt and debris go in lower part, clean (for the most part) goes in barrel. Undo cap every few months to clean debri out. Look up more on this setup on Pinterest.
Hey friend what if you get a few radiator clamps (you will have to put a few together) and make a few bands to hold can from bulging out.? Or try to make a clamp of some kind. Hope this works.👍
Be careful using water from a shingles as it can have oil from the tar in them. I prefer tin , it doesn't have a petroleum base that can wash off in your tanks.

I got idea to fix glue issue and mesh . Line the top with mesh and cover it with white rocks. They weigh down the top and mesh. Large enough to remove when cleaning or just rinse off small ones. You can add extra mesh around down spout with wire for double filtering.
Many areas in the USA have outlawed rainwater collection. As I am not subject to those restrictions, so I have two 10,000 liter tanks for rainwater collection. One collects rain directly from my roof, from their I have an electric pump to fill the second tank which is on a stand, ten feet higher than my roof line. This triple filtered rainwater is plumbed to constantly refill three toilets, feed all of my outdoor faucets, and also a personal shower house which I constructed outdoors (similar to an "outhouse", but much, much nicer).
What idiots would prohibit the collection of rain water. What more , what idiots would allow such a law to be passed. What idiots would accept such rubbish, eventually

In Los Angeles it is mandatory to attach cisterns to downpipes, of course with as many droughts that we have in California I forget what rain looks like! Enjoyed how to make one thanks. We did same with a waste bin for watering baskets and small tubs. We put a length of hosepipe near the top to stop it overflowing. Mad small holes along it and placed it aroung the narrow bed along the fence. This was done for the water coming from the shed, it collects plenty for out needs and hardly ever have to water the narrow bed.

The trash can idea was very creative, only thing is the flowers on the front were put on upside down. They appear to be growing downward rather than upward based on the shading. The black and white diamond stenciling looked fabulous!
Very nice. I suggest you chain link several barrels together with an overflow system from one to another. Otherwise a heavy rainstorm collected from your large roof area will quickly fill the barrel to overflow creating a pond near the foundation of the house. At the minimum an overflow pipe to carry overflow away from the barrel and away from the foundation. You want a maintenance free system not one for which you have to be alert for overflow from your collection system whenever it rains.
Trash To Treasure 🌟 This would make a great storage container for me . I store my out of of season clothes this way plus wintery sweaters , blankets, & heavy winter items . This would make my tiniest of tiny closet space so complete 🤗
Absolutely. Plastic trash cans are the best way of collecting rainwater, because it allows you to collect several gallons at once - instead of relying on just a bucket.
I have used this idea in the past. One of the most common problems I had and u suspect many others is the can bulging out in the middle. To fix this, you can connect large hose clamps together and tighten them down so the bulge is prevented. The cheaper route is to build a tight-fitting 2x4 brace around it and secure it with since wedges to keep it from falling. Other solutions will stay pretty consistent with that theme. Best wishes!
I've had one for a few years and it's never bulged at the middle. Maybe it's the type of can used? I got a more expensive one from HD, it's the grey one...think it's called Brute? I also have one of those black ones like in the video from Walmart to hold and mix potting soil/compost. Definitely a different material/type of plastic used. The HD one is a thicker.
First of all...if you don't put that spigot a bit higher you will fill the bottom of the can with sludge and block the spigot. #2 why in the world would you GLUE that screen underneath the lid. Because, here in Texas it gets so hot that it will literally melt the glue and you will be trying to dig the screen off of the bottom of the can with bits of glue ( depending what kind of glue you use,hopefully not toxic!) floating in the can. And cleaning the screen won't be easy. If you LAY the screen over the top and press it gently into the indent of the trash can lid then it is very easy to take off shake/ wash the debris out of it. And you can't just use ANY cheap trash can or it will bow out and split with the weight of the water. So you need a very sturdy "Rubbermaid Brute" type trash can. Also you will need to put some "Mosquito Dunks" in the trash can to keep the mosquitoes at bay. One more thing. Some trash cans already have a hole in the top with a plug in them. All you have to do is pop the plug out and your in like flint. I know these things because I have been doing it for 20 years! Good luck! :)🌱
My landlord made me a full sized barrel but he put a bucket on top of barrel with tube comes out bottom of bucket into barrel that fits inside barrel. You put fine screen on bottom of bucket and fine river rock-gravel and that filters the sand and silt before it hits the barrel. Nice clear water. 6 years I been running this. Have to clean out the top bucket maybe spring-mid summer fall.

What's really cool about this is that you can put as many containers as you want and connect them together with PVC pipe and it will feel all of them.

The rainwater collection idea is so genius. I'd probably put my filter on top for easy removal of debris but I still love it....and the trash can is absolutely beautiful!
I have a big tank for collecting water. I use a pre filter system and it works perfectly. Us a pipe with a cap on it then put a tee on pipe just above the lid. Dirt and debris go in lower part, clean (for the most part) goes in barrel. Undo cap every few months to clean debri out. Look up more on this setup on Pinterest.
I use 2 trash cans and one is a 65 gallon heavy duty but it still bulges out when it's full of water
Hey friend what if you get a few radiator clamps (you will have to put a few together) and make a few bands to hold can from bulging out.? Or try to make a clamp of some kind. Hope this works.👍
Be careful using water from a shingles as it can have oil from the tar in them. I prefer tin , it doesn't have a petroleum base that can wash off in your tanks.
@@jeffharper7579 thanks for saying this. I was just going to get water from where it kind of leaks and corner but it does come from the roof. I've been probably use that to water plants but then it becomes mosquito habitat.

With utility costs rising, being able to cut your water bill is great. Also, using "grey water" for outdoor watering is great, too!
I got idea to fix glue issue and mesh . Line the top with mesh and cover it with white rocks. They weigh down the top and mesh. Large enough to remove when cleaning or just rinse off small ones. You can add extra mesh around down spout with wire for double filtering.
Great suggestion. Agree the top should be weighted to avoid mosquitoes getting in any opening and laying eggs.

This is a great idea for our community garden. There is a pavilion nearby so we could save the rain and let the kiddos water the plants.
Many areas in the USA have outlawed rainwater collection. As I am not subject to those restrictions, so I have two 10,000 liter tanks for rainwater collection. One collects rain directly from my roof, from their I have an electric pump to fill the second tank which is on a stand, ten feet higher than my roof line. This triple filtered rainwater is plumbed to constantly refill three toilets, feed all of my outdoor faucets, and also a personal shower house which I constructed outdoors (similar to an "outhouse", but much, much nicer).
What idiots would prohibit the collection of rain water. What more , what idiots would allow such a law to be passed. What idiots would accept such rubbish, eventually

We did same with a waste bin for watering baskets and small tubs. We put a length of hosepipe near the top to stop it overflowing. Mad small holes along it and placed it aroung the narrow bed along the fence. This was done for the water coming from the shed, it collects plenty for out needs and hardly ever have to water the narrow bed.

The trash can idea was very creative, only thing is the flowers on the front were put on upside down. They appear to be growing downward rather than upward based on the shading. The black and white diamond stenciling looked fabulous!

Very nice. I suggest you chain link several barrels together with an overflow system from one to another. Otherwise a heavy rainstorm collected from your large roof area will quickly fill the barrel to overflow creating a pond near the foundation of the house. At the minimum an overflow pipe to carry overflow away from the barrel and away from the foundation. You want a maintenance free system not one for which you have to be alert for overflow from your collection system whenever it rains.

Absolutely. Plastic trash cans are the best way of collecting rainwater, because it allows you to collect several gallons at once - instead of relying on just a bucket.

I have used this idea in the past. One of the most common problems I had and u suspect many others is the can bulging out in the middle. To fix this, you can connect large hose clamps together and tighten them down so the bulge is prevented. The cheaper route is to build a tight-fitting 2x4 brace around it and secure it with since wedges to keep it from falling. Other solutions will stay pretty consistent with that theme. Best wishes!

I've had one for a few years and it's never bulged at the middle. Maybe it's the type of can used? I got a more expensive one from HD, it's the grey one...think it's called Brute? I also have one of those black ones like in the video from Walmart to hold and mix potting soil/compost. Definitely a different material/type of plastic used. The HD one is a thicker.
I have been doing the plastic bin conversion for years, also washing out and using disused wheelie bins moving your water around!
You can use a pvc female adapter on the inside as a nut on valve threads to retain/seal valve in place, rain water harvest= good thing.

I’ve been wanting to learn a way to catch my rain water and this is fantastic! Thank you!
First of all...if you don't put that spigot a bit higher you will fill the bottom of the can with sludge and block the spigot. #2 why in the world would you GLUE that screen underneath the lid. Because, here in Texas it gets so hot that it will literally melt the glue and you will be trying to dig the screen off of the bottom of the can with bits of glue ( depending what kind of glue you use,hopefully not toxic!) floating in the can. And cleaning the screen won't be easy. If you LAY the screen over the top and press it gently into the indent of the trash can lid then it is very easy to take off shake/ wash the debris out of it. And you can't just use ANY cheap trash can or it will bow out and split with the weight of the water. So you need a very sturdy "Rubbermaid Brute" type trash can. Also you will need to put some "Mosquito Dunks" in the trash can to keep the mosquitoes at bay. One more thing. Some trash cans already have a hole in the top with a plug in them. All you have to do is pop the plug out and your in like flint. I know these things because I have been doing it for 20 years! Good luck! :)🌱

Love this! With the right paint, you can colour co-ordinate to your house, if you want. Also, an earlier comment about using E6000 is spot on!
Use a lighter to seal the holes, they'll be smooth and won't tear or deform should there be weight on them
My landlord made me a full sized barrel but he put a bucket on top of barrel with tube comes out bottom of bucket into barrel that fits inside barrel. You put fine screen on bottom of bucket and fine river rock-gravel and that filters the sand and silt before it hits the barrel. Nice clear water. 6 years I been running this. Have to clean out the top bucket maybe spring-mid summer fall.

How would a galvanized trash can with lid work out? Maybe i could boil the water? Would.that be safe?
