  • Jonathan Scott introduces the Grand Organ of The Royal Albert Hall, London, UK (Full details and specification below).
    Jonathan first performed on the RAH organ in 1999 at the BBC Proms and has given many performances there since its restoration in 2004. The organ was the largest in the world when it was built in 1871 by 'Father' Willis with 111 stops. It was enlarged by Harrison & Harrison in two stages in 1924 & 1933. It was fully restored by Mander Organs in 2004. It is now the second largest pipe organ in the UK and has 147 stops and 9,997 pipes.

    Well I have to say that is the clearest sound of this instrument I have ever heard. When you hear this organ on TV or radio, the quality of the broadcast sound is dire. So well done to you both for this top quality recording!!

    • @ds1868
      @ds1868 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The quality of the recording is superb. No doubt the gantry was used which was not raised for this recording. This probably explains the clarity and balance of the recording. For organ concerts the gantry is raised for visual effect but it may not be the best in terms of recording attributes.

      I think for 'last night of the proms' (BBC) the audio quality is dire, abysmal, whatever. Unbelievably, same for the Friday music night programme the beeb did. Best audio is news broadcasts - and The One Show - which occasionally has musical content - and that is far better than proms audio.
      Listened to LNOTP 2 years - but never again. Only good thing to be said about it - one can hear the organ above the orchestra on the final pieces :)

    The quality of recording here is so superior to any CD I've ever heard. The greatest problem in my opinion is it is mostly only ever heard when the hall is full of people. A few thousand people soak up the sound like a sponge. Also, on TV I don't think the recording of the organ is given any consideration when compared to an orchestra say, even when the organ is the solo instrument ! So, Scott Bros., if you would care to produce the first ever quality recording of this instrument.. It would be welcomed by us all I have no doubt.

    • @foxtrotwhisky4061
      @foxtrotwhisky4061 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I heard the organ a couple of nights ago with the hall full of people and it was utterly spectacular! It was a performance of the Saint Saens organ symphony, so the organ won't even have been at full whack as Jonathan points out in 2020's organ Prom. Agree about organ recordings though, to balance the sound the engineers typically lower the organ in the mix, so the effect of listening at home is normally underwhelming.

    Incredible Instrument! I've read a-lot about it,, including a number of comments by Audsley. I can see that the console has been updated since Audsley's day. I'm glad they are showing all the love and care that such a treasure deserves. Certainly the English have done a much better job at preserving their cultural treasures than the US has,, just look at the poor state of the Midmer and Losch Organ at Atlantic city Board Walk Hall. They have been working at restoring it and have about 35% of it functional, but if the city put the same effort into it that the British have,, they would have that beauty up to %100 by now. They've been working at restoring it for over a decade now,, Yet the Original company built it from the ground up in just 3 years. My respects to the British, Heck, they even have queen Elizabeth's Organ in perfect working order and it's 400 years old!

    I worked for the company that rebuilt it about 20 years ago. I had a wander around a few times before I left, and they started the actual rebuild, I believe it took over 3 years to complete. It was the largest organ I've ever been in. When the company took It on it was in a very bad state. Not because the previous company was bad, it was because the organ had no real work done on it for decades.

    I really admire these videos. I love the hall and I love the organ. I write as someone who was a TV producer and who sang in Proms with the organ - both before and after it was renovated fairly recently, i have even been inside it (when there were no-go areas where ranks were collapsing and cyphers were frequent - requiring someone inside to stop them). The video and audio quality are excellent. And Jonathan’s explanations are lucid and full of great information. Well done. Let’s have more! .

    Wonderful, what an instrument. I remember one afternoon before an evening organ concert sitting in Hyde Park and clearly hearing the organist practising in the Hall from half a mile away!
    It's such a shame that 2 million pounds was spent restoring this organ and yet it is so rarely heard, even at the Proms. And when it is used it is usually with an orchestra so has to be very restrained to avoid drowning out the orchestra.
    The best I have ever heard this organ was at the 2013 Bank Holiday Prom with Richard Hills playing "light" organ music. Quite a revelation hearing it played in this way and it worked perfectly. Please can we have more concerts like this?

    • @ds1868

    • @georgespeed3061

      @@ds1868 Often when the organ is used at the Proms only some Bach is played. I have nothing against Bach but it doesn't really make use of the full resources of this organ and only a small part of it is heard. Richard's concert was so refreshing but is sadly no longer on TH-cam.
      I'm pleased that Jonathan mentions the H&H history of the organ as on most Radio and TV broadcasts it is always described as the "Father Willis" organ, yet a very substantial part of it was built by H&H.

    • @ds1868
      @ds1868 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@georgespeed3061 Yes the Willis pipework was preserved in the rebuild. On the Great it has been allocated to the Great Second division, which can be coupled down to the Choir manual. Manders also added a IV rank Fourniture (19.22.26.29) to this division to give the upper work added clarity. But the majority of the pipework is H&H and the total number of pipes is 9,997 (and not 9,999 as erroneously stated by the RAH, who also continue to say it is a Willis instrument, which is incorrect).

    What a treat. This organ is so poorly promoted and fiercely guarded and it’s great to get a proper sense of what it’s like. Beautifully recorded too. What a contrast to how it sounded before the rebuild, which was frankly, crap. Thanks for doing this.

      That was because it's condition has deteriorated and was unreliable so was not used much as it had a habit of breaking down during a concert. The Restoration toook 2 years and cost £1,500,000

    Brilliant!!! I was at the inaugural concert when Mander rebuilt the organ it was amazing! Sadly I think it is a very under used instrument now! I never see concerts advertised and would love to hear some of the more famous works played on it! I is an iconic instrument in an iconic building. It was what got me interested in organ in the first place! Henry Willis and Sons were an amazing Victorian organ builder of the time! It's incredible to think how many locations in the UK have Willis organs.

      I was also at the inaugural concert in June 2004 in one of the boxes right of centre as you look at the organ. It was a superb concert as you say. It is very sad the instrument is hardly used. The RAH management are simply not interested in promoting this world renowned instrument to best effect.

      I assume that it is so loud that it would drown out the orchestra and as it is replicating nearly all the musical (wind) instruments with reeds, out of pipes, would sound weird, and confined to halls/gothic chapels and cathedrals - associated with hymns and choirs - but there have been classical (what I call acoustic) orchestral concerts with a pipe organ accompaniment. I like the pipe organ as it reminds me of praising God with hymns in Church (a professing Christian) ✝️

      I too was at the inaugural concert, left of centre in the upper rows. It was one of the highlights of the year, and it's wonderful to have this demo and other recording by Jonathan here. Happily I was showing it to my 12 year old son this evening to whet his appetite. Would be a dream to get back to the UK to take him to a recital - and we'll be standing in the upper gallery for the best spot for live concerts. And for the record, John Mander was very accommodating when I popped into Mander's Bethnal Green workshop one lunchtime to congratulate him.

    Many thanks to both of you gentlemen for an efficient, pristine demonstration of this magnificent musical monument. In addition to all of the accolades that have been said, I have to comment on how well-tuned the organ is. Was it tuned especially for your demonstration and (possibly a recording?)? Or it was tuned for one of those rare public events which immediately preceded this? Either way, it's not often that one finds an organ of this magnitude in such good tune.

Sadly because of a rehearsal at the RAH, it didn't happen, and we had to make do with the Organ of Twickenham Parish Church, I've waited a ling time for this. BTW Geoffrey can be found on TH-cam th-cam.com/video/ZbiUyAe8K8Y/w-d-xo.html

    Unbelievable, even if you do a concert there, they don't give you enough time to fully explore the instrument. You have to creep in at 5am whilst they start the stopwatch. I'd love to know how much real time he got with it to prepare, I would think 4 hours if he was very lucky. Look how rushed and pressured he is during this video.

    • @ds1868
      @ds1868 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Rowan Lidbury Agreed. The Royal Albert Hall management are simply not interested in this instrument. They do the absolute minimum. The pipework is also now getting very dusty and dirty, it hasn't been cleaned since the rebuild in 2002-04 and is now well overdue. Sad really, but there it is.

  • @ZGryphon
    @ZGryphon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It just occurred to me, as Jonathan pointed out all of the stops that are designed to sound like other instruments, that a pipe organ is essentially a pneumatic analog synthesizer. Which is pretty wild. I don't know why I never thought of it before, this is hardly the first time I've noticed that pipe organs are set up to replicate most of the bits of an orchestra, but I'd just never put it together until now.

    • @ds1868
      @ds1868 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose you could think of it that way. Remember though we are talking about organ pipes, in this case 9,997 of them. The tallest is 40 feet tall and weighs just over one ton.

    • @ZGryphon
      @ZGryphon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    acoustic bass 64 stop? Always wanted to hear it, what does it sound/feel like? I assume it's not a 64ft pipe as there's only 2 in existence so how is this achieved? Stopped 32ft?

    • @OrganMusicYT
      @OrganMusicYT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a resultant stop derived from the 32ft, bottom C will play with another note, typically the 5th above C, and so on, to give a resultant 64ft. More or less the same manner you would have for a resultant 32ft made from a 16ft stop.
