Bonobo & Anna Lapwood perform Otomo live at the Royal Albert Hall

- I often do middle-of-the-night practice sessions at the @royalalberthall , and have grown rather fond of hall staff calling up to the organ with requests. At 1am on Friday 20th, someone called up asking me to play Bach's Toccata in D minor. It turned out it was Bonobo's band. 12 hours later they had written me an organ part, and 18 hours later I was helping them close their show to an audience of 5000. This was, undoubtedly, the best moment of my life so far...!

I'm a trained organist and moments like these are extremely important. They bring the power and majesty of the organ to a younger generation and that's priceless
@Crazy organist If you are a trained organist you should know that the registration used in this performance is very much restrained, given the resources of this, the largest concert hall organ in Europe.
@ds1868 So the organ can do more. Great. But the point @crazy organist is making is that a new audience is introduced to a majestic instrument. He does not need to be put down.
it started with him shouting "play the Toccata" at her the night before, and she obliged. when she realised it was Bonobo she told him she was a fan, and he asked if she'd join him for his next show, and notated this especially for her.
he understands the privilege, occasion, and opportunity to be able to do this - and he took it.
I was blown away by the Interstellar soundtrack when Hanz Zimmer used organs a lot. Calling it an instrument is an understatement, it's like a living breathing beast.

I can't imagine being in the audience not expecting it and then all of a sudden this massive and beautiful instrument envelops me. Such a gorgeous blend of new and old.
@Jared White. Barely 30% of the organ is being used, if that. If full Great, the Solo reeds and full Pedal were used the rest of the set-up would be obliterated.

I remember playing with a massive pipe organ when I was in a wind symphony. It is the coolest feeling.

We have no idea how they cut stone as precisely or more precisely than we can today, with "no technology". And zero fucking clue how they moved the stones that heavy. My wife and I are both music majors in the States. She often picks on me for listening to EDM while I have a background in music theory, and this video perfectly demonstrates WHY I listen to it. It shows that Bonobo isn't just slinging notes until it fits his ear. He actually knows how to compose. And seeing how happy she is playing the organ in her videos makes my heart swell. It's why many begin their advances in music, due to a love of it, and she clearly has not lost hers. She's an inspiration

Absolutely agree; many people ‘dish’ on modern music and musicians. This shows the Bonobo's musical skills to incorporate such a complex instrument into their music at short notice with such brilliant effect. I also love Anna’s smirk just before she plays the first note. She knows what is going to happen.
The expression on her face throughout the performance - priceless. The unfiltered joy of being a musician, an artist.

I was at this gig and absolutely not a soul had any expectation of the organ being played at all. What an unfathomably majestic moment It was when those tones came blasting across all and any fancy sound rig. I've heard an organ a few times and despite being an atheist their majesty and power feels like divinity! Utterly astounding to experience especially when being given the beans by a true expert! You made a 10/10 show into a 15/10. Unparalleled, and I hope you took the roar of the crowed to heart because every yell in that moment was for you!
Agreed Jack - but the best bit is that the organ was playing on its own and not rigged up to anything - thats the power of it. Truly a massive sound for a massive moment - all made possible by Anna and her skill and the legends that are Bonobo.
I love watching this video clip and in particular the way in which Anna plays and the joy on her face throughout, it really makes it for me.

She said that she doesn't know if it could get any better than that evening. She was blown away by the experience. They only heard her doing her regular practice and were so impressed that they asked her to perform with them at the last minute. They only had one practice before the performance and it turned out flawless!

For those who do not know how this came about . . . Anna practices in the RAH at night, and often plays bits and pieces when requests are shouted up to her by cleaners and other staff. One night, the requests came from Bonobo’s crew, who were setting up for his concert. She was asked if she would like to take part, and, being Anna, said “yes!”. One of the musicians wrote her a part for the organ, and a few hours later, it all happened! If you have never been to an organ concert, go!
Only time they can practice in many cases. I’d say it worked out rather well! Perks of the graveyard shift!

As a tech director from a facility with a big pipe organ, I loved the whole thing, but I think the lighting director was the star of this show, besides Anna of course! Lol

It’s an instrument designed to try and make you feel god. Wether or not we believe in that stuff, that’s an instrument whose creators were reaching out to something greater than themselves.

This is what happens if musicians.. real musicians come together. It doesn't matter if you come from EDM or classical. You both love making music. Beautifully executed by Bonobo and Anna Lapwood. Both exquisit musicians!

Absolutely incredible, I was up front when this was performed. Had an inkling they were up to something because they slowly began raising the little curtain by the organist towards the end of the previous song. It was so subtle, which made the payoff even more stunning.
The way the audience reacted was incredible. I get teary eyed just watching the video so I can't imagine being there to witness it

Not even close to full organ. I'd guess it's the full Swell division, and not even open all the way.
Perfect example of something that shouldn't work, yet is perfection in its majesty. Accompanied by the best smile on the Internet.
That's epic. During the whole concert the organ is only decoration in the background and then, in the last song Anna lets the beast off the leash and the audience is overflowed with epic sounds that you not only hear but also feel.

As a child, I always sat in the pew, next to my dad who was the church organist. This instrument pulses through my veins, even at age 72.

OK, so I have listened to this several times, I don't know if I will tire of it. The look on Anna's face as she knows in seconds she is gonna change lives. Her anticipation, then seconds later the delivery you would need to be dead to not be moved.

I just realised that many people in the audience may never have heard an organ being played live or indeed recorded. What an amazing experience listening to the majesty of the massive Royal Albert Hall organ combined with Bonobo. Iconic musical moment!!!
Watching her count out the measures as Bonobo plays so she's sure to come in at the right spots just shows how professional she is. First woman given a scholarship to Oxford in organ, like, ever, on an instrument that you aren't even allowed to touch for practice until you actually show talent.

Was there that night, i said to my mate jokingly, wouldn't it be epic to hear the organ and they were like nah, it to old for this kind of music, imagine there and my shock when you started playing, they soon changed there mind.
I've lost count of how many times I've watched the video on the Royal Albert Hall channel. It's great to see this view now. The way the power of the organ just envelops the whole hall is just incredible. Goose bumps!

Otherwise, you just produce noise. Technique is something that can be learned and practised, but feeling is something to be put in.

I've never heard this song, I've never heard of this band (I was honestly expecting a small chimp-like creature to appear in this video), and I've never heard of Anna Lapwood. But yes, this was one of the most moving things I've stumbled upon on TH-cam in ages. It's so great to see a musician caught in the ecstasy of their art. And there's something particularly evocative about performing in that spot, perched above the stage, back to the audience. She's right in the centre of everything, and yet apart. Alone, with the suggestion of loneliness, amongst all those people. But still at the heart of the music.

This version of the song changed it forever…. Watched it probably 50 times in 2 days and keeps spinning in my head. The facial expression says it all. I’ve read her bio and this women is something very special. For me it’s so cool to watch a musician enjoying what she does. Very very cool, very very epic.

The problem with that is, what you see is only half of the thing. The other half is hidden. And look at the size of it. Also, the big pipes are over 3 tons each.

I can't stop coming back to this and listening to it repeatedly. And it only gets more powerful and amazing with each view/listen. I think of those huge blowers pouring air into those truly massive bass pipes and the reverberations and sheer power and vibrations resonating the entire old building, turning it into an instrument as well. The organ seems to live and breath pouring out an incredible range of sound and chords. The bass notes in particular are so wonderful and deeply felt that they're almost scary. The light show is unworldly and amazing, and that last crescendo with the final note dropped in to make that final chord.......if that doesn't excite your soul, nothing will.
And the visual, that massive impossibly beautiful organ with lights playing on the tubes, while down below in a tiny splash of light sits Anna, absolutely dwarfed by this monster of an instrument. Just the thought that this petite woman is commanding that much power is breathtaking to witness. And knowing that the audience had no idea the organ would be part of the performance? I simply can't imagine what that experience must have been like.
I would have been walking on air for a week afterwards.

I'm always amazed at how many people never get a chance to shine. Not due to lack of ability, but simply because they're too often simply overlooked. While it's not really my genre, I have nothing but respect for an artist with enough of a generous spirt that they can give an obviously talented peer the opportunity. The look on her face during the whole experience says it all for me.

Oh me too! There is a version released by the Royal Albert Hall and it is very good. But this one is up close. You get to hear the crowd roar in joy an surprise. Nothing will ever beat that. I wish I'd been there SO much.

I'm from Switzerland and i do not know, who Bonobo is nor do i know Anna Lapwood and i don't know what i see here. BUT, i have Goosebumps!! I'm sure It was a very special Moment for ALL of them there (live!)
I don‘t know Bonobo either, but I‘ve been a huge fan of Anna‘s cross-over approach to organ-playing for a while.

Bonobo's an old school trip-hopper that's gone more upbeat in recent incarnations, he's known for incorporating "real" instruments in his live stuff so this pairing is very natural for his music.

I’m so rarely significantly moved by any media but every time I hear the final bit starting at 4:10 it actually brings tears to my eyes, especially once 4:50 hits. Absolutely wild.
I just watched that moment again (for like the 20th time!), and the thing I really like is that she is in 'control'. She has this look of 'I know what I'm doing...see this massive machine? I know how to work this, stand back...you are not going to believe what this can do'. Its very strange how so many people are saying they are emotionally connected to this isn't it?

Yes, I have no idea where the emotional connection comes from. I am the furthest thing from religious or spiritual - I wouldn’t even consider myself sentimental - but I feel something welling in me every time I hear this moment. Even when just listening on the terrible iPhone speakers.

I warmly remember the days when my class mates would brag about the Wattage of their bass and guitar amplifiers.
Being an organist, I simply said: "My instrument doesn't do watts, the air compressor is rated in kilowatts".
I can see Anna loving every moment. She is very expressive. You can see her counting and gasping for air because she is so excited. So incredibly passionate! I'm totally impressed by her dedication to this wonderful instrument. She is dead on focussed. What a talent! I will definitely follow her career from now on.

I'm late to the party, HOWEVER, I'm one of the first to raise my hands when Anna comes in (bottom central right) because you can FEEL an organ before you hear it. And i knew what it was. Unexpected, infinitely welcome, best musical experience of my life, it was a great and tasteful collab.

At 00:30, thats a wonderful moment. In the Hall plays the music for the audience, but no one nows what is gonna coming.
And than jou see the big smile on Mrs Ana Lapwoods face, she nows what is coming and than, BOEM the organ sounds loud and overwhelming. What a surprise for the audience. A goosebump moment. I wish i was there and could have had that fantastic experience.

I've been on the concert from this tour in Poland. Otomo blew me away! BUT there were no organ there... I can't even imagine how powerful it sounds with live organ.

That was without a doubt the most fun I've ever had at a concert, and I've been to a couple.
i don't know these performer but id give anything to see her live in a concert like this. THIS is how you show younger people the beauty and power of these instruments. more bands should do this.
I bet Anna Lapwood will be part of the team whenever Bonobo plays RAH. Hats off to Anna of course but also to Bonobo's band for seeing the possibility!
Considering that they wrote this section over a single day, I'm looking forward to what happens when they come back. Because next time they will know that she is here and they will plan accordingly.
Amazed at the “craft” of music, how bands can just sit in with each other, how they can do one rehearsal or none, and come up with THIS. Yes the joy in her face and body. And The ORGAN. If all you’ve ever heard is hymns in a church this takes you to another level. Yes and tears. What an emotional instrument and human experience.
They need to do an expo each year.
Jacob Collier could host it or something for sure.
Just have all of these artists who can do collaboration on-the-fly.

The sheer power of that organ must've blown some minds in the audience.
She is pure light. Her energy, her smile, her talent.. wow!
I started counting the measures with her. All the years of band came rushing back. So well done! I cannot imagine the rush of experiencing this in person.
The RAH Video was great for itself, but seeing the amount of joy on your face and your reaction to the audience is just INSANE! I'm happy that you got this opportunity!
Forget the music for a moment... the look and Anna's face as she plays, going from sheer joy to intense concentration, and back again... better than the music! So glad she put that camera to watch her play; it puts more into the music than the music has itself, and that, is saying something!
