    Greg Hawkes keyboard playing is what got me hooked on the Cars. I'll always say his sound was what made the Cars. When I first heard It's All I Can Do I wanted to know who was making that sound on the keyboard and I was a drummer.

    I was 17 years old when this album was out. I had a 1971 Plymouth Duster with an under-dash cassette player. I loved this album "Candy-O" and I played this cassette version so much, it ragged out and I had to buy another one from the record store! All of you are correct when you say that those were the days and music was awesome. I am glad I lived it.

      Heh, isn't that funny. I was also 17 when this album came out and I had a four-door 1970 Dodge Dart (which was more or less basically the same car as the Duster). Mind you, I didn't have a tape deck in the car as I couldn't yet afford one. And I had to make do with listening to 'Candy-O' on my parents' stereo until I could afford one of my own in early 1982 with money I'd saved from working in a stereo shop.

    Yeah, 78 and 79 part of the best music generation and a fun time to be a young adult. So many guys with the Candy-O album cover on their bedroom wall. That is still a hot album cover today. I was driving my first car then to the beach, a Mercury Comet. Everyone would have their car radios set to a station in Buffalo. For us Canadians it was a short distance just across Lake Ontario. Any time the Cars came on there was this wave of sound from cars spread around just booming their songs out. Girls dancing, bonfire going later in the evening, lots of cold beer. I doubt a group of young people today could have so much fun with just a couple of simple ingredients.

    The Cars were so good about each one knowing their limits and their role. Tic sang the songs that were right for his voice and ditto Ben. Meanwhile they stayed back when Elliott had his solos and let him shine. Rick wasn't an ego maniac and knew his limits a a guitarist and singer, that's what made the Cars great.

    Biggest thing is that unless you were around at the beginning of New Wave, you'll never understand how refreshing it was after the lethargic music scene of the 70's and protest era of the late 60's/early 70's. Vietnam was over and no matter how you look at it, this was fantastic after having to listen to Eric Carmen, ABBA and other disco hits. This was ground breaking at that time and that's why so many people still love this stuff.
    I'm sure others will agree with me...who were there. :)

    I was in high school when the Cars albums were released, and we just never knew how lucky we had it having such talented & quality fresh music coming out. We have a Rockwiz show here in Australia; the lead singers from Operator Please and Little Red sang Just What I Needed, gr8 duet; we may just get musos to focus and write good stuff, as soon as they leave the industrial noise behind.

      This generation only produces sameness. Creativity died with the millennials and additional nails are being driven by generation Y or whatever the next one is being called. Creativity requires one to take a risk and with everyone watching everyone else and ready instantly to 'call out' any type of deviation or alternative viewpoint, these generations march in a straight line. And music suffers for it.
      No, there is no equivalent of Ric Ocasek. Current music all sounds alike and even the performers look and dress similarly. What a bunch of drones. I too am glad I lived through better times, musically and in many other ways.

    I used to play this song as a teen on my turntable and many years later it still gives me goosebumps. Everytime I watch this video, I end up mesmerized by the climatic conclusion of the song.
    On their first 2 albums, the Cars were way ahead of their time. Thankfully, MTV wasn't around yet.
    I was a DJ then and remember following an evening of playing horrible disco songs (to make people dance), I would later get home and play the Cars in order to get my senses back.

    A lot of key elements make The Cars sound what it is. The churning cauldron of sound that is David Robinson's drums, sleek guitar from Elliott Easton, and especially those keyboards that were second-to-none from Greg Hawkes. All bubbling and crackling behind those incredible lyrics and quirky delivery of Ric Ocasek and the smooth touch of Ben Orr.

    the first two cars albums are the best. i played the hell out of this album when i first got it. my best friend and i used to turn this song up really loud and we were always amazed at elliot easton's guitar work and david robinson's drum fills in the last minute or so of the song. i agree with a previous comment -- this is one of those songs where you HAVE to hear the studio version. it's mesmerizing!

    Living proof that 80's keyboard players actually believed that they were musicians and that guys like Ben were always the diamond in the rough that carried a good rock tune.

    • @stillspooky
      @stillspooky 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some were musicians, Mike Score of Flock of Seagulls is the prototype for "Look, I'm pressing one key for the entire tune" non-musician.
      Greg Hawkes was okay, but I taught my granddaughter the keyboard line from "The Cruiser" when she was 3. She played along on her playschool xylophone.
